Editing the Comment Prompt
-
I’m trying to edit the comment prompt so that instead of “Leave a reply” it says something else.
I was told to do this:
Go to Settings>Discussion
And then to hover or click on Discussion, scroll down to the “Comment Form Prompt” field right above the “Save Changes” button.The problem is I don’t have this field at all. Above the “Save Changes” button I have “Social Notifications” field. I looked everywhere on that page and there’s no “Comment Form Prompt” field.
I’m using a free WordPress.com blog, and on the support page it says that I should find that “Comment Form Prompt” field even on a free account, but it’s not there.
It’s so frustrating >:( .
Thank you in advance if you can help me solve this. I’m not a techie at all, so I hope the solution is not complicated.

I looked at this a couple weeks ago and noticed that I can see it on an older account but not a newer one. Since you have a new account, that fits in with my suspicion. I didn’t see anything about this being discontinued in the forums at the time, so let’s see if we can have a staff member check on this and reply if that’s a bug or a feature change.
Tagging with modlook to get their attention. :)

Staff will revert when they look in on this thread but AFAIK changing the comment prompt needs to be done in WP Admin
Add /wp-admin/options-discussion.php to your site address to get there and you’ll find it at the bottom of thd page.

Hi there!
@justjennifer is right,
At the moment, you can change the comment prompt by going to Settings > Discussion in wp-admin. You will only see it on the desktop version, however, not the mobile version.
Hope this helps!
-
@staff-doublebassd – thanks for the quick response, but @veroniquebutterfield and @darciemg are correct. The line to change the comment prompt is missing under Discussion settings in WP Admin for new accounts (I opened yet another new account earlier to look).
-
Thanks for confirming, @justjennifer! Yes, the /wp-admin is exactly where I looked. I even used the two accounts on the same test sites and it appears for older accounts but not the newer one on the same sites, regardless of the site owner.
-
Weird. I went directly to @veroniquebutterfield’s wp-admin and see the field to change the prompt. Maybe it is something only I can see…I’ll look into this.
-
Thanks @staff-doublebassd, yes, there are definitely things in your screenshot that do not appear for me.
Just to compare, here’s a temporary screenshot of the WP Admin discussion settings on a new site under a new account.
-
Here’s a screenshot from my test site. The left of the image is this user, but the right is the other user that’s also me. I created the account 8 months ago.

@staff-doublebassd
I can locate the comment prompt at the bottom of the Discussion settings page. https://NAME_OF_SITE.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-discussion.php
I won’t post a screenshot because it looks identical to the one you posted above https://cloudup.com/cAka_ZH7Lg5
Operating System Windows 10 (64-bit)
Web Browser Firefox 59 -
-
@staff-doublebassd it seems to be based on accounts and not sites. I used the same two accounts to look at a site on the newer account that was recently made. The older account can see it, but the newer account cannot.
-
Just adding something that might be relevant, in my screenshot showing a new account/test site, I had Admin privileges.
-
Hi everyone.
It appears that option is being phased out for newer accounts. I’ve asked the developers involved for more information, but it looks like this might already be a final decision.
-
Thank you everyone for trying to help me out!
I tried Jennifer’s suggestion of adding Add /wp-admin/options-discussion.php to my site address, but there’s still no Comment Prompt field above the save button. This is really puzzling!
-
Please read what I wrote just above your last comment. That option is being phased out, meaning it no longer exists and there is nothing you can do to make it appear.
-
@staff-doublebassd
The site was created in August of 2007. (My username account is 12 years old.) I can also state that the ability to change the comment prompt was not always there. -
Please let me correct what I just said. I don’t think the ability to change the comment prompt wording has existed as long as I have been here but I’m not sure of that.
May I also add that phasing out (removal) of the comment prompt is disappointing for the reason justjennifer has already stated.
-
@ kokkieh thanks for confirming that! It’s disappointing, but it helps to explain the difference in what people are seeing.
