Domain transfer

  • I really wish I could speak with a representative over the phone. I don’t know the lingo (domain, host, etc.) so I don’t know how to explain very well. I have a wordpress.com and wordpress.org (I think?) but my website is not running. I contacted bluehost and they told me I had to contact wordpress.com to switch the nameserver from wordpress.com to bluehost. my domain is johnreidblogs.com please feel free to contact me at [phone redacted] or [email redacted] I don’t know what email is associated with my blog so please just send it there. Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi John,

We don’t provide phone support on WordPress.com but I’m happy to help you :)

It sounds like you are trying to do the following:

    – You have the domain johnreidblogs.com registered through WordPress.com
    – You wish to use johnreidblogs.com on your WordPress.org site hosted with Bluehost

If this is correct, then you will need to update your nameservers on WordPress.com to those Bluehost have supplied. We have a guide that explains the process of changing nameservers, here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/#changing-name-servers

If anything is unclear, just let me know.

  • Hi Gemmacevans,,

When I select the domain to manage I get an error sign. It says “Domains are not available for this site. You can only purchase domains hosted on WordPress.com at this time.”

  • Hi John,

I’ve had a closer look at the domain johnreidblogs.com. It expired on 2016-11-19 and is currently in the redemption period.

You can learn more about expired domains here:

    Domain Expiration

I can try to get the domain back for you, however an $80.00 redemption fee is required by our registrar in addition to the regular renewal cost. If you agree to these costs I can generate a payment request for the amount. Once that has been paid, we can start the process of trying to get your domain back for you.

Should the recovery fail after you’ve paid the redemption fee, that fee is refunded in full.

If you do not want to pay the fee, you can wait until the domain is released but you may not be able to get it back if it is purchased at auction during this time.

Please let me know if you agree to the $80 fee and would like us to attempt recovery.

I’ll wait to hear form you and let me know if you have any questions.

  • I can possibly lose my domain? I’ve had millions of people read my blog there. Let’s get it back.

  • Hi John,

I can possibly lose my domain?

It’s a possibility but if we act quickly, we stand a better chance of being able to get it back.

I’ve had millions of people read my blog there. Let’s get it back

I’ve just sent a payment request to the email address on your account. Once we receive payment I will contact our registrar to begin the recovery process.

  • So if we wait till it’s released I don’t have to pay the $80? And will I lose all of my blogs with johnreidblogs.com/(whatever the follow on is)? How will we know when this is?

  • Hi John,

So if we wait till it’s released I don’t have to pay the $80?

Yes, that’s correct. This option is a riskier because the domain could be bought at auction or someone else could purchase the domain before you when its released.

And will I lose all of my blogs with johnreidblogs.com/(whatever the follow on is)?

On WordPress.com, if a custom domain expires, your site will revert back to its default WordPress.com address: johnreidblogs.wordpress.com.

On a WordPress.org site, if the domain expires, you won’t lose your blog or its content. People won’t be able to access your site using that domain.

How will we know when this is?

Domains are released to the public approximately 80 days after expiration — provided they haven’t already been purchased. I say approximately because you may wait more or less time for this to happen. johnreidblogs.com expired 50 days ago.

We are not notified when a domain is released, so can’t provide any advance warning.

  • I don’t think it’d be risky in my case because I don’t think there are many people who are after my domain. Do you agree?

I’m confused about the .com and .org thing. My domain is registered with wordpress.com but it’s a wordpress.org site. How can I access my blogs at this point so I can save the content?

  • Hi John,

I don’t think it’d be risky in my case because I don’t think there are many people who are after my domain. Do you agree?

I would recommend trying to get the domain back as soon as you can, but ultimately it’s your decision. I think it comes down to two things: whether you want to pay the $80 fee or not and whether you are willing to wait until the domain is released back into the public domain.

I’m confused about the .com and .org thing. My domain is registered with wordpress.com but it’s a wordpress.org site.

You originally mentioned you have a WordPress.org site hosted with Bluehost.

You can buy domains through your WordPress.com account and use them for your WordPress.org site by either:

    1. Transferring them to a different registrar — such as Bluehost
    2. Keeping the domain on WordPress.com and updating the nameservers to point to your WordPress.org site

How can I access my blogs at this point so I can save the content?

You can access your WordPress.com sites via My Sites at the top, when logged in to WordPress.com.

To access your WordPress.org site, you can go to example.com/wp-admin.

Come back to me if anything is unclear.

  • I can’t log into the wordpress.org site, it says the DSN couldn’t be found.

As far as wordpress.com vs wordpress.org I made my site orginally with wordpress.com but then switched to wordpress.org…but the domain is apparently with wp.com. Is there a way you can check for me? Sorry this is so confusing.

  • Hi John,

but the domain is apparently with wp.com. Is there a way you can check for me?

The domain was registered with WordPress.com.

I can’t log into the wordpress.org site, it says the DSN couldn’t be found.

If you contact Bluehost, they might be able to help you access the site without the domain name.
