Domain name transfer

    If I transfer a domain name from another provider to wordpress, to point to my present blog, does that sever all ties with the other provider? or would I keep paying annually to them for the name use? Or is that domain name fee now included in the wordpress regular annual fee – say, I switch from a free blog to the Personal Plan, which includes a domain name?

    Also, in the transfer instructions, WordPress refers to ‘NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM and NS3.WORDPRESS.COM’ Are these ‘NS1’ etc. a secret code for something I’m supposed to know about, or are those the actual letters/numbers that are to be written in the transfer process?

    Hi there,

    It’s not possible to transfer a domain registration to us, so you will need to keep paying your current provider for the annual renewal of your domain. You’re paying them for ownership of the domain.

    In a case like this, where the domain already exists with another provider, you need to point it to us instead via a process called domain mapping. Domain mapping needs a connection on our end – that’s the domain mapping upgrade included in the Personal Plan – and it needs a connection on the domain provider’s end. The latter is done by changing the domain’s name servers to point to us. That is the NS codes you mention above.

    What you’ll need to do is contact your domain provider and tell them you want the domain’s name servers set to those 3 records. Once they’ve done that, you then add a plan and domain mapping upgrade on our end, and in a few hours that domain will show your WordPress.com site.

    Thanks for the info. Question:
    I found this page describing registration transfer of a Domain:

    As I read this, it seems I could transfer registration of my Domain (after having pointed it to my WordPress page) from where it is (APlus) to WordPress.

    Is it that you cannot receive such a registration?

    It seems that instead of giving me the Domain upon upgrade, you could receive it by transfer registration and then give it back to me.

    And since you provide the Domains free,I could stop the annual payments to the original provider.

    Is my reasoning wrong somewhere?

    As I said above, that is not possible. Domains registered with us can be transferred out, but we are not able to accept incoming transfers. If we were able, you could have used the free domain included in the plan to do that, but currently that is not possible.
