Domain name confusion

    I have started a blog with Word Press.com. I would like to take it off line for maintenance. I understand I need to register a Domain name to get a plugin. What are the other advantages, are there additional tools. $18 is the current cost. What are the benefits of $88 upgrade. I would like to design a web site and another Blog are all these accessed / separated by separated log in details. e.g. If I wanted a contributor, would they have access to my other Blogs etc
