Domain Mapping – Need To Pay Previous host?

  • A friend (no really) is hoping to map their previous domain name to their new wordpress.com site. NO problem. What she is wondering though, is does she still have to pay and maintain her previous fees and account with the other domain name company? Does that make sense?
So does mapping just mean that wordpress will create a link from the previous address to the new wordpress one, or does mapping mean that wordpress take over the domain name and it is just part of the premium plan?
Any info would be of great help :)

  • Yes. WordPress.com links to it. The domain remains with the previous host so there has to be payments made there to keep that domain name working.

WordPress.com doesn’t currently accept incoming domain transfers but if you already own a domain and continue paying for it elsewhere then you can map that domain to WordPress.com by using the domain credit you would be provided by upgrading to a paid plan (which doesn’t have to be the Premium plan. The Personal plan would work too).
