Do You Have Information About Semalt (dot) com?

  • This is not a problem per se, but a search for information about Semalt on behalf of a growing number of bloggers. In November 2013, I wrote a post about Semalt after I saw 31 hits on my blog’s home page from them within a single hour. All I can find is their site’s home page, which claims they’re some sort of SEO group.

Since Sunday, 29 December 2013, that post has seen hundreds of hits from other bloggers looking for information about Semalt. It appears they’re showing up as referrers everywhere now, and, like me, no one has been able to find any real information about them.

I was wondering if you might know something about them that I could share with everyone who is leaving comments on my post. It appears my WordPress post now has the number one spot on search results for the company, which I find rather ironic.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer to the blogging community!

  • It is hard to say.

If I were being suspicious, I would say that the company is crawling sites as a form of advertising to get people to do exactly what you are doing (noticing and being curious) in hopes that they would then sign up for its services. If I were being REALLY suspicious, I might think it was just a scam to get you to give out your email or FB info.

Or perhaps they are running some sort of legit spider crawl. Overall though, I don’t have a lot of faith in anyone who is advertising “search ranking” type services.

  • If they’re looking for “clients,” I’d have to say they’re not doing a very good job. If you go to their website, you must sign up first before accessing anything. I’d like to think most people today are savvy enough not to do such a thing.

I think what I and others are most concerned about is if there’s potential mal-intent involved beyond spamming. But if WordPress hasn’t seen any red flags, then hopefully it’s safe to simply ignore semalt and their “hits” on our blogs and websites.

Thank you for the quick reply!
