Do I need to keep my WP.com blog open foreve in order to import my WP followers?

  • Hello,

I’m in the process of transferring my wordpress.com website (sarahfuste.wordpress.com) to a self-hosted wordpress.org website (acupofgoodlife.com, domain was just purchased, but hasn’t populated across the web quite yet).

I understand that JetPack might allow me to keep my current wordpress followers by having you folks import those for me.

I had one question: I wish for simplicity, and once I post an update on sarahfuste.wordpress.com about the website change, I would eventually like to delete my wordpress.com blog. Will doing so delete my followers? In other words, do I have to keep my current blog alive and open in order for JetPack to work with my current followers, or is your import to my wordpress.org site a one-time import? And will it import both my email subscribers and my wordpress followers?

For my email subscribers, do I need to install a specific email subscriber plugin for you to import them, or does it use something from JetPack?

Thank you so much for your help on this matter, and I’m so happy to be able to continue working on the wordpress platform!

    Regards,
Robert Fuste (on behalf of my wife)

  • Sarah, I wonder if you can help me? I created a static site in WP. Then more recently signed up to a host (ipage) and have linked (pointed) my domain names to this. However now of course I want to import my static WP pages into the host site. The host have said I need to create a back up before they can help me with this. Do you have any idea what I need to do (I am a novice). I don’t know what jetpack is?
    Thanks
    Rebecca

  • Rebecca, I believe you’re needing to do a wordpress.com export of your site and then give it to your new host to take over from there. More info at: http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Everyone else, the acupofgoodlife.com domain name has now propogated as it should, and I’ve installed and connected JetPack to the exisiting wordpress.com account.

My question still remains: is it possible to import my current wordpress.com followers and email subscribers into my new wordpress.org install? If so, I’ve read I need to contact WP.com… how do I go about doing that easily?

And can I import any other things through JetPack, such as previous site stats, likes, etc.?

Thank you so much for your help!
    Robert

  • Once the subscribers are transferred, you can set the WP.com blog to private or delete it altogether and it won’t affect them.

  • Hello raincoaster,

Thank you for that clarification – it’s good to know that my followers will be with me even after I delete my exisiting WP.com blog.

In the meantime, I’m feeling a bit frustrated about getting help from the WP folk – I’m not sure if they actually interact within this forum area, or if I need to contact them some other way that is buried on their support site.

I’m anxious to get the new WP.org site live and marketed before I have to re-import evertything again to catch newly posted comments and followers.

Who or how do I start the process of getting WP.com to transfer my followers over? I have my WP.org site up and running, JetPack is installed, so now I’m waiting for further direction from someone. I know I could manually import over the email subscribers, but I don’t know how to import the wordpress followers.

    Thank you for your help!
    Robert

  • I have flagged this for staff attention. There’s a “secret keyword” to use in the tags. Alternately, you can post to any existing “transfer my followers” post in which staff members have replied. They keep an eye on those.

  • Raincoaster,

Thank you for showing me the ropes in this new forum – I appreciate it. I will then wait for a reply from a staff member, or hop on over to a “transfer my followers” post.

    Thanks,
    Robert

  • Hi Robert, I transferred your followers to your new blog at http://www.acupofgoodlife.com, as requested.

Your email followers will continue to receive email updates, and your WordPress.com followers will continue to see your new posts in the Reader. If your WordPress.com followers would like to receive email updates, as well, they can subscribe via email on your new blog.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help. :)

  • Hello Rachel,

Thank you so much for your help! I do have one more question: i’ve only ever worked with email subscribers before through the Subscribe2 plugin, and I could see a separate list of subscribed users and their email addresses.

I’m having trouble “seeing” the followers that you kindly exported for me… where would I find that list? Or is it in one of my database tables and I need to install a plugin to “see” the list on the front-end?

Thank you so much for any help you can give!
    Robert

  • Hi Robert,

Those subscribers are linked to your blog with the Jetpack plugin, and you can follow these steps to see a list of them:

    1. Go to your Dashboard
    2. Click on Jetpack > Site Stats
    3. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page
    4. On the left, you’ll see a section labeled Subscriptions
    5. Click on the link labeled ‘Blog’ to see a list of email address for all the people who have subscribed.

We have more information about how the subscriptions module in Jetpack works here: Jetpack Subscriptions

If you have any other questions about how Jetpack works, you can check out our Jetpack support site or contact our Jetpack team here: Jetpack Support

  • Hi Rachel,

Aha – I see them now – thanks so much! And I’ll contact the JetPack support crew with further questions.

    Again, much appreciated.

    Robert
