Did you notice the recent mega peak of spam comments

Merry Xmas WP dev team and thanks for providing us with such a fantastic platform.
I hope you are aware of the recent mega peak of spam daily comments all coming from the same source (2-3 email addresses).
I can pass you more info if you wish

The blog I need help with is desdaughter.wordpress.com.

If you get spam that slips by Akismet then mark it as spam (do not delete it) and over time Akismet will learn it’s spam.

On the spam that Akismet catches on it takes only seconds to click “empty spam” and you don’t even have to click “empty spam” if you don’t want to. Akismet will maintain comments it has caught for 30 days from the time they were received, and then it will delete the comment automatically.

There is no such thing as eliminating all spam but Akismet works very well. Set up comment moderation, if you have not already done so, because allowing anonymous commenting on your blog is like putting out the welcome mat for spammers.

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

I reduce spam by using this setting:

    3. Automatically close comments on articles older than __ days – This setting can be used to have comments closed on articles that are X days old. As an example, if you only want articles to accept comments for 30 days you would check the box and type 30 into the text field. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings

And I moderate comments too. Comment moderation http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-moderation

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

You may not want to moderate comments but here’s a reality check. The vast and overwhelming majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam.

Thanks a lot “timethief” but I have been using WordPress for 3 years and I know all this… My concern is not so much for my blog – because spam are well filtered by Akismet – but for WordPress. Why: as stated, because of the recent increase in spam amounts… I now have almost 100 spam per day, all by the same “Michaelkact” and “Stanleyon” users. This recent increase must be detrimental to servers, speed, users experience etc. So I am not asking for help on how to deal with those, I just try to inform WordPress dev team… cheers

100 spams a day is a very low number. In fact many of us get hundreds and even thousands of spam comments every day. In all cases we mark spam as spam and let Akismet learn it is spam.

I’ve experienced no recent increase of spam. However, periodically over the past 8 years there have been brief spikes in the number of daily spam received on my website. For a while I spent an hour or so a week blacklisting hundreds of keywords, email addresses, and website URLs found in the spam on my primary site. It didn’t seem to have much effect, but after a few days or maybe a week the spam rush would be over, back to normal. I too often see multiple spams over a short period from a small number of URLs (with various extensions), but these high frequency spam URLs eventually recede as Akismet automatically learns and, though at times more slowly than usual, acts upon the intruders.

Thanks but I neither need nor want you to tailgate my correct answers in any thread like this one and post a lengthy block of blah, blah, blah that echoes what I already stated. I clearly don’t need the follow-up email so please just stop.

I neither need nor want you to tailgate my correct answers in any thread like this one…

You do exactly this about fifty times a day.

lengthy block of blah, blah, blah

Perfect description of many of your posts.

Maybe a hundred times a day. Hard to keep count.

I am asking you politely to stop inflating my email load from subscribed threads by tailgating me and posting responses that repeat the correct answers I have already posted. I assume you will be stopping that now.

Information I provide here that you did not:

    1. That the recent peak she is experiencing is not universally affecting WordPress.com sites. It may be limited to her website.
    2. That the spam rate will normally vary with occasinal spikes of short duration.
    3. That the peaks of spam from certain URLs with various extensions will eventually recede without taking any action.

    blah, blah, blah

I have seen you respond with 8 copied and pasted paragraphs that were irrelevant, or only vaguely relevant to the topic at hand. In not a few such cases, I was able to directly provide a remedy for the issue in a sentence or two.

Whether a post is valuable or not is a subjective evaluation. I don’t criticize your forum behavior, your habits of posting. Or haven’t until now. You, though, have frequently criticized various aspects of my posting behavior.

Shall I count the number of times you posted on a topic on which I posted? It’s bound to be ten to twenty times more frequently than I do on topics on which you’ve posted, given the ratio of your forum activity compared to mine.

This is not your forum. It is ours. Do not tell me how to use it.

@desdaughter, Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention. As has been mentioned, these spikes can indeed happen. I will look in to those users and see what I can do about them.

@timethief and @musicdoc1, Please remember that just as you are both volunteers on the forums, so too is everyone else who provides their time and energy. They are just as welcome to provide assistance as each of you are, even if the information which they provide overlaps a little bit with what you state. We strive for an open forum experience for everyone here and telling other users to stop posting is not welcome.

All that has come from this exchange is a forum thread which has buried a user’s original question. If you have some legitimate concerns, whether with each other or with us (or both!) we would be happy to hear them. @musicdoc1, I or @rootjosh will be emailing you shortly so you have our contact information, and @timethief you have my contact information. Please feel free to reach out at any time rather than filling a thread in this manner.
