dictionary widget

Can I please put this widget on my blog? It doesn’t seem available for wordpress for some strange reason
<!– Collins Widget –>
<script type=”text/javascript”>
var widgetWidth = 300;
var widgetHeight = 250;
var language = “English”;
</script>
<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://www.collinsdictionary.com/widgets/searchbox/collins_widget.js”></script>
<div id=’Collins_Widget’>
English Dictionary;
</div>
<!– End Collins Widget –>I’m sure writers will appreciate it.
Another one I’m trying is the shelfari widget..but as I have goodreads already..I wonder if it’s enough. I’m a librarian- I need all the tools I can get!The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
The code they provide uses javascript which isn’t allowed here (see the reasons why), an alternative would be to include a link through to the dictionary/search main page.
-
You can try to send a mail to (email visible only to moderators and staff) and ask if there’s not a possibility to have their widget as iFrame, but I am not sure if they can help you.
-
I am sorry, I mean, search at their webpage for a contact address, then try to send your enquiry.
-
oh ok.
I put a link instead.
Are there any widgets available that can search words that don’t use javascript?Are we only allowed to use the widgets wordpress provides?
-
You can use any widget that is neither an iframe of a JavaScript. There are no automatically updating widgets that don’t run either iframe codes or JavaScript codes that I know of.
-
So..I can only choose the ones on wordpress?
ok. Wish that was clear and explained on the dashboard. I’m new to all this. -
No.You can use any third party widgets, provided the code is not JavaScript or an iframe code.
-
so when a website says ‘put this widget on your blog’ do they mean you can put it on any blog except a wordpress one?
its ok, just a bit frustrating that’s all. I understand that some could compromise wordpress but I think it’s a bit limiting. I guess I can just put links.
-
When just “wordpress” is referred to without the .com the widget can be used on WordPress.ORG installs only. Here’s a link to the comparison http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
-
But you said most of them are and you don’t know of any that aren’t. So that doesn’t help me at all. I’m not going to write to everyone and say your widget thing needs to change to use some other code. Because I don’t even know what code would be compatible. WordPress doesn’t say.
Forget it…I have better things to do. Thanks.
-
Oh!
I didn’t know!
I don’t know anything.
So am I better to have a wordpress.org site?
My wordpress.com was a waste of time? Because I can hardly do anything. How do I change, and will it cost?
Is it worth it?I’ll probably work on it on Monday..I want to have a rest today…

For self-hosting a WordPress.ORG install figure an average monthly total cost (including cost of a domain name) of about $10 to $25 generally, but that all depends on storage and bandwidth requirements. You will be responsible for all upgrades, installations, backups and troubleshooting. If you install a theme or a plugin that negatively affects your blog, then you have to figure out what went wrong and fix it yourself as there is no Staff support. There are only peer support forums.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate.
http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/1. Hire a web host and purchase a domain http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme and widgets as they cannot be exported. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. WordPress.com is the top level domain here and all blogs hosted by WordPress.com are on .wordpress.com sub-domains. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/#change-name-servers-to-point-the-domain-outside-of-wordpress-com and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.
