Customizing Winter Solstice Theme
-
Hi All,
Newbie here.
Winter Solstice is a child theme of parent theme “Twenty Seventeen”.
Does that mean that I can make my css edits to “Winter Solstice” directly without worrying about losing them if updates occur? I installed Child Themify plugin but it won’t let me pick “Winter Solstice”, only 2017, 2016 and 2015 as parents. I suppose that’s because Winter Solstice is already a child theme?
Also, I’ve come to conclude from watching more than a few YT vids that editing CSS directly in the editor is best way to customize? Or are there all-in-one plugins that can really help? I tried SiteOrigins CSS and it was a bit dodgy.
Thanks much for any help/tips!

If you are using a child theme, that means you likely have a self-hosted WordPress.ORG site.
This is a public forum which provides support only for the sites hosted on WordPress.COM.
You can seek help for WordPress.org sites here: https://wordpress.org/support/
Also – please know that you might need an account to post on self-hosted WordPress forums. You can create one here. https://login.wordpress.org/register
You can read the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Thank you!

Whoops! Forgot to mention –
Alternatively, if you currently have a Business plan with WordPress.COM you are able to create a child theme.
If you are WordPress.com Business plan owner, could you please also include your site URL?

Cheers!

To answer your questions directly:
Does that mean that I can make my css edits to “Winter Solstice” directly without worrying about losing them if updates occur?
No. If Winter Solstice is a child theme that you downloaded from WordPress.org or somewhere else that provides updates, if you make changes to it directly, they will be lost every time you update Winter Solstice.
I installed Child Themify plugin but it won’t let me pick “Winter Solstice”, only 2017, 2016 and 2015 as parents. I suppose that’s because Winter Solstice is already a child theme?
That’s correct.
Also, I’ve come to conclude from watching more than a few YT vids that editing CSS directly in the editor is best way to customize? Or are there all-in-one plugins that can really help? I tried SiteOrigins CSS and it was a bit dodgy.
I would suggest using the built-in Additional CSS panel in the Customizer if you want to make CSS changes to a child theme.
If you need further help with your self-hosted site, do post over in the WordPress.org forums, as AllyKM mentioned. These ones are for folks hosted here on WordPress.com
