confusion with domain name
-
I purchased a plan with wordpress.com with the intention of using bluehost, thinking I needed to purchase both. After purchasing both I realised I only had to purchase bluehost and that came with wordpress so I cancelled my original wordpress plan. I registered my domain name I had selected with wordpress.com with bluehost but I’m unsure now if that domain name can still be used through bluehost or if it was lost when I cancelled the wordpress plan. If it was is there anyway to get it back? I just wanted to use wordpress through bluehost, got confused and paid for both instead of using wordpress.org and then getting bluehost. Is there anyway to get the domain name back? I read there was a possible waiting period, how long is that? Completely and utterly confused!

Hi Nikki
Registering domains and setting up hosting accounts can be confusing as there’s multiple ways of doing things. Rest assured we can help clear up the confusion.
Right now you have your domain name registered with wordpress.com and a hosting account with BlueHost. There are two options available to you in this situation.
- Keep your domain registered via wordpress.com and use a custom A Record to direct it to your BlueHost account. This support article describes this process: Move a Domain Using Custom A Records
- Transfer your domain name to BlueHost alongside your hosting account there. This option requires more steps to accomplish, but means you’ll have your domain registration and hosting together at BlueHost. You will need to take steps on both wordpress.com and BlueHost to complete the transfer. The support article: Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar describes the steps to take first on wordpress.com. This article on Transfer Your Domain to BlueHost explains what to do on their end.

Hi lowcarbnikki,
I checked your domain lowcarbnikki.com is registered with WordPress at 2018-02-17.
You should contact them via Live chat here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/live-chat/I hope this will help you.

But isn’t my domain name no longer existent because I cancelled my plan with wordpress.com? I’ve checked the domain name lowcarbnikki.com that I had too and can’t find it anymore, how did you check and find it dashingdidu? Boomsite, I tried to transfer the domain name using custom A records, the first option you listed but did not have the dns for my bluehost account or know how to find out what it was, so tried the second option and as my wordpress is no longer a paid account their is no option to ‘transfer domain’. I will try to contact support.

Okay, just clicked your link for support via Live Chat, dashingdidu, and it says it is only available to those with a plan which I no longer have.

Hi lowcarbnikki,
I see you cancelled lowcarbnikki.com on 18th February 2018. Cancelling a domain means you give up ownership, so it’s not something we recommend doing if you will need to use it again in the future.
If we act quickly, I can restore the domain for you. As @boomsite mentioned, there would then be two options for using the domain on your Bluehost site:
- Keep the domain registered with WordPress.com and point the name servers to Bluehost.
- Transfer the domain to Bluehost after 60 days. Newly registered domains can only be transferred 60 days after the registration date. However, your domain can be pointed to Bluehost until it is ready for transfer.
The cost of your plan has already been refunded so I would need to send a payment request for the domain cost ($26) before it can be restored.
If you don’t want to restore the domain, it will be cancelled and released in around 5 days. This is the riskier option because lowcarbnikki.com will be released on a first come, first served basis.
Please let me know which option you prefer.
Thanks!

gemmacevans if the domain name will be available again in 5 days, can I take a chance at registering it through bluehost as I’ve already paid for a domain name through them? If that is the case I would prefer to take that risk.

Hi lowcarbnikki,
if the domain name will be available again in 5 days, can I take a chance at registering it through bluehost as I’ve already paid for a domain name through them?
Sure, I just wanted to let you know the option for recovering the domain was there :) We won’t receive a notification when lowcarbnikki.com is released so it’s best to check whether the domain is available again frequently.
Best of luck with your .org site!
