changing the theme to accomodate many menu bar dropdowns – full question

  • hey all you experts,

I need to change the theme of my site, along with allowing a total of 10 menu dropdowns to be displayed on the homepage without being shifted off the screen. I am currently working with the default theme that was given to me because I need to get all the data uploaded first, then worry about how the site looks. this is the way the menu bar at the top looks now: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pkn0_tXEW9ygO9aER_voswmajV6CH7dN/view?usp=sharing

=> if I add any more menus, they will not be visible on the page as they will be shifted off. I’ve already tested it. how can i change my site currently so that 10 menus can be seen on the screen? that’s my immediate issue. thanks guys!

  • hello, @thebridgecommunicator,

You can do these following steps to change your default theme.

    • Click on “My Site”.
    • Scroll down and expand Design.
    • Click on the Themes button.
    • There will be a bunch of themes.
    • Click on the three dots of any theme to expand the menu.
    • Click “Activate” to change your theme.
    • Wait for a minute to activate your theme.
    • Click on “View Site” to view your home page site.

Here is a link to see more detail to change your theme

Or you need to do CSS to display 10 menu on the homepage without changing your theme.

  • Hope you don’t mind me adding to this discussion.

I don’t find any site connected to the account you are posting from, so please let us know your site address is to ensure you are getting the right support for your website. Many people who post here actually need help for their website using the WordPress open source software rather than having a website hosted here on the WPcom platform.

In case your site is using the WP software, you’ll want to head over to https://wordpress.org/support/ where you’ll find documentation and users who have more experience with the software you are using. If you don’t have a username on the ORG forums you can register one on the top of that page.

WPcom (where we are ) and WordPress are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. You can learn more about that in our support guide at https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  • @tenchoenyi,

thanks much. I’ll have a look at what you’ve told me. I’ll get back to you when I try what you’ve said.

    jennifer,

I can’t post any link to my website because it is not available to the public yet. and there is *no* site connected to my account for that reason. I know that you guys and the “.org” folks are different entities. and yes, I am using the open source WP software and do not have my site hosted here. I can’t have anybody going to my site and seeing the content there for business / competitive advantage reasons. I’m sure you understand that…..

  • and yes, I am using the open source WP software and do not have my site hosted here.

Hello again, Thanks for adding that. In this case, the information that @tenchoenyi gave you would only be relevant if your site was hosted here on WPcom.

If you are having an issue with your current theme on your WP site, you’ll want to head over to the forums for your theme or if you need suggestions for a different WP theme, then the general ORG forums. https://wordpress.org/support/

Again, these support forums are for WPcom sites.

    Best wishes.

  • jennifer,

give me a reason why I would host my wordpress site with you guys, would you? what makes you different than the hosting companies godaddy, inmotion, host gator, and the rest? If I can post questions here and get them answered effectively, then it might make sense for me to get my website hosted with this organization. can you answer these questions? thanks.

  • Hey Adam, the biggest reason is that if you are not a technical person, all the backend updates, backup and security are taken care of by WPcom directly. To keep things simple, WPcom free site users can activate any of the themes in our Theme Showcase https://wordpress.com/themes/ and if you have a Premium upgrade or higher, you can edit your theme’s CSS. One of the best features of upgrading to at least the Personal plan is you have direct access to WPcom support by LiveChat or email rather than posting here to our public forums.

There’s a trade-off, however, because WPcom is a shared environment so you won’t have the ability to add certain codes or javascript or modify your theme’s PHP. If you need custom 3rd party plugins or themes, you’d only be able to upload those under the WPcom business or ecommerce plans. Upgrading to either of those plans also gives you the ability to use codes not available on free sites.

And of course regardless of plan, free or otherwise, you agree to abide by the WPcom Terms of Service https://wordpress.com/tos/ and User Guidelines https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-guidelines/

The com-vs-org support guide https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ does a good job of outlining the basic differences and the Pricing page outlines the features of each plan, free and paid. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Have a look at those and come back to us here if you have other questions about anything else.

  • jennifer,

I *AM* a technical person, and rarely have any issue doing things myself. So I’m assuming that I should just stay with my current hosting company, is that correct? That’s what it sounds like to me. I will read through the documents you linked to in your post later when I have time. thanks. I’ll re-post here when I have gone through it all and make the decision if hosting my website with your service makes sense or not.
