Can you place ads on WordPress

A lot of people are saying that you can’t place ads on wordpress, and some people say you can make money on wordpress, I am confused. I bout my hosting and domain name from hostgator. I just want to attach wordpress to my site and pay $17 a year. Can I place my own ads this way. Someone please explain, I don’t want to get shut down.

If you bought a domain name and hosting through someone other than WordPress.com, then you need to seek assistance from the good people over at the forums on WordPress.org

I think they are on Hostgator now and want to move to WordPress.COM and have ads here. Cut their hosting costs.
