Can you place ads on WordPress

A lot of people are saying that you can’t place ads on wordpress, and some people say you can make money on wordpress, I am confused. I bout my hosting and domain name from hostgator. I just want to attach wordpress to my site and pay $17 a year. Can I place my own ads this way. Someone please explain, I don’t want to get shut down.

No. Please read this so you comprehend that when you purchase a domain and domain mapping that’s what you get and nothing more. Nothing else changes.

I bout my hosting and domain name from hostgator.

If you bought a domain name and hosting through someone other than WordPress.com, then you need to seek assistance from the good people over at the forums on WordPress.org

Some people confuse WordPress.ORG and WordPress.COM (which is where we are). These links will explain the difference:

I think they are on Hostgator now and want to move to WordPress.COM and have ads here. Cut their hosting costs.
