Best way to embed the following video that does not fall into the categories?

  • This video does not fall into the default categories that my theme provides codes/instructions for, like youtube and video, so I’m hoping to find help here.

    http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8471697&event=MIN1150

It’s a flash video. I would just search how to embed a flash video, except this is sort of different. It’s not just a singular flash video posted somewhere. It’s a flash video within the NHL Videocenter player. For example, I have that real player application that detects videos in webpages and allows you to download them, like with youtube videos and other flash videos. It doesn’t detect these because they’re like highlights from the videocenter library that you select through their player.

Now, these videos do offer up an embed code of their own, which looks like this (this is a different highlight i didnt copy down the embed code for the first one but its the same thing):
    <object width="640" height="383" id="embed" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"><param name="movie" value="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="flashVars" value="hlp=8471697&event=COL75&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" /><embed name="embed" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="383" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashVars="hlp=8471697&event=COL75&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/"></embed></object>

But when I tried that, I got the following error message.

    Goshdarnit!

Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

How do I embed the first link?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • youtube and vimeo.
Also that embed code, it won’t publish like I said, it gives the goshdarnit matt’s fault error. But when I preview it, I do get the following link on my page.

    http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf

So it’s still not embedding the video right in, and that link doesnt even take you to the video, it takes you to the videocenter/neulion library without the actual library, as in it loads up but then its just a black page. But it is putting a link there, so maybe that helps people figure out the problem.

  • I’m using the P2 theme and my url is sharkcircle.wordpress.com by the way. Hoping the theme doesnt have anything to do with the problem. I dont think it does. I know P2 doesnt deal well with media when you upload it from the front page, but im using the dashboard and doing it the longer/safer way. Youtube embed works just fine so I dont think its the theme.

  • I wish there was an edit button.

I am now realizing with the functioning youtube video that there is no obvious control to change the size of the embeded video, so that’s another question I have. Some of the videos I want to embed are from the nhl videocenter and some are from youtube, both of them I want to be able to change the size of the embeded video. Inside the videocenter code they give is a place to set the video dimensions (but that code didnt work), whereas the youtube link that you put into the [youtube=link] code is just a link and it doesnt have a place to set the dimensions.

So I would also very much appreciate the code i have to add to the normal code to set the youtube dimensions.

    To summarize my questions are:
    • How do I embed the videocenter flash video, and set the video dimensions.
    • How do I set the video dimensions of an embedded youtube video.

      Thank you very much!
  • Question 1 answer: You can embed them by using special GIGYA shortcodes. See here:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/07/22/gigya-shortcode-3-widgets/

Question 2 answer: Have you read this? http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube

  • Thanks a lot wpgaurav. No I havent read the second, I will do that now if it’s not too long.

Okay so width and height are = &w=…&h=…
Just to confirm? I want to make sure my browser is reading that correctly, and the & signs aren’t actually supposed to be something else.

Another thing that’s happening with the default embed code from videocenter, now when I put it into a post in safari (and this does not happen with firefox), when I put it in a post in safari, and click “update”, first it will say “proofreader has detected some errors etcetc etc” and I click “ok” to publish anyway. Once I click okay, within my posting box, the embed code sort of works. There’s a black box for the video, and the loading bar loads like it usually does for the video, and then “nhl videocenter” shows up on the top right corner of the box. The video doesn’t actually play, but at least the videocenter part and the square box indicate that at least something is embedding, even if its not the whole video. videocenter is embeding, just maybe without the video info. but then when i click view post, or go to the post, the box is gone, and its just a .swf link.

Maybe that can help the web doctors diagnose the problem. But now I will try wggaurav’s link.

Okay, you posted a tutorial, not a text code, and the tutorial doesn’t work for me at all.

    A. “Some sites provide a post-to-WP button”

But not videocenter, so I have to go to

    B. “you’ll have to copy the flash embed code”

Except my embed code seems to be broken. If it’s not, there are still other problems.

    a. Copy the widget URL from the embed code

I want to post a flash video, not a widget. If this just means copy the url to the video without the rest of the code, then that would be: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8458637&event=BOS547
If that’s the case, big if, we’re good so far, up until…

    b. Copy the necessary attributes and values from the embed code.

Except 1. I don’t know what these are, and it doesn’t explain very well. And 2. in an effort to figure it out anyway, I went through the codes. They have “value,” but my codes don’t have attribute written in them at all. I even searched the word “attribute” for my whole document and it doesn’t show up once. This means I have to refer to the even more poorly explained part at the bottom of B.

Some variables in customizable widgets may show up like this:
    flashvars=”VARIABLE1=VALUE&VARIABLE2=VALUE&VARIABLE3=VALUE”
If you see such a string of options joined by ambersands but without the flashvars attribute

First it says some may show up like that, with flashvars, which is what my embed code has. Then it says what to do if you have one without flashvars but not if you have it. It’s nonsensical. “For those of you with flashvars instead of attribute, here’s what you do if you don’t have flashvars!” Makes no sense. Even it did, here’s the real problem.

Turn the whole into a shortcode this way:
    [gigya src="WIDGET URL HERE" ATTRIBUTE1="VALUE" ATTRIBUTE2="VALUE" ETC. ]

Etc? I hope that’s part of the code and doesn’t mean I’m supposed to put something else there that isn’t specified. But that’s not the problem. Here is the problem. Attribute1=”Value” (as in value1), Attribute2=”value” (a second value).
My embed code has five different values!!!

    http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8471697&event=ATL622
    <object width="640" height="383" id="embed" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000"><param name="movie" value="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="flashVars" value="hlp=8471697&event=ATL622&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" /><embed name="embed" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="383" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashVars="hlp=8471697&event=ATL622&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/"></embed></object>

This is the innate problem with just sending people to tutorials without really looking through their problem to see if the tutorial even applies to their problem. You just send the person off to a link to spend an hour trying to make sense of something they don’t understand, when, because you yourself do understand the stuff, you could have looked at their code and figured out the shortcode in two minutes. Then the person you’re trying to help would have the shortcode that specifically works for their specific link, and would just be able to insert the video link into it for all their all (videocenter flash) videos from then on.

So thank you for trying to help, but I just want the code. The tutorial’s shortcode has space for two values, but my embed code has 5. It does specify which of the 5 to take out and use in the shortcode. It also does not specify what to do with the flashvars. It also does not specify within the shortcode, where it says “value”, if you’re literally just supposed to write “attribute1=”value”” or if you’re supposed to put the actual code that comes after the value in the embed code, after “value” in the short code. Or does “value” actually mean you’re supposed to type the value code in there, not the actual word “value.” There are all sorts of things not specified or explained and that don’t even fit with my embed code. I’m sure it’s a great tutorial for people whose embed codes only have two values like I assume is normal, and who already understand all the things that aren’t explained, so don’t need them explained, but it doesn’t work for me.

Can someone please help with this? Thank you =)

  • I’ve continued to try and create the shortcode off that tutorial. It’s not working. Heres as far as Ive gotten.
    [gigya src="http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8471697&event=ATL622" ATTRIBUTE1="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" ATTRIBUTE2="hlp=8471697&event=ATL622&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" ETC.]

Typing that into the HTML post view and publishing, I get a white box on my page instead of the video. Typing it into the normal post view just to see, I get nothing on my page.

  • Tried this too based on the example they give on the tutorial. Here is the example. [gigya src="http://widgia.com/widgets/calendar/calendar.swf" quality="high" width="206" height="215" ]

I thought if I tried to model my code off that example it would tell me some of the things that weren’t explained in the actual descriptions. I have changed my the first URL based on the example, from the actual video URL that links straight to the video to the URL that ends in swf . The problem with the poorly chosen example is that the tutorial goes over how to make a shortcode with “attribute=value” in it, but then they posted an example without attribute or value in it.

Here is what I came up with from the example.

    [gigya src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" value1="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" value2="hlp=8471697&event=ATL622&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" quality="high" width="640" height="383"]

That didn’t work. It loads the videocenter video box, black, with nhl vifeocenter in the top right, but it doesnt load the actual video within the videocenter.

I tried removing the numbers after the two “value”s, did not work.

I tried changing value=”(the value code)” to attribute=”(the value code)” like in part of the tutorial.

    [gigya src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" ATTRIBUTE1="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/embed.swf" ATTRIBUTE2="hlp=8471697&event=ATL622&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" quality="high" width="640" height="383"]

This gave the same result as value=”(the value code)”.

    I’m out of ideas.

  • I think
    [gigya movie="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/ embed.swf" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashVars="hlp=8471697&event=COL75&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/ embed.swf" type=width="640" height="383" quality="high"]

  • Hey you did help. Thank you!!! This is what I needed.

Wait no. Doesn’t work. The video and the play button shows up but once you click it, the video just goes black and the video never plays. But it’s closer… Maybe you’re just missing the last part? the video playing part.

  • But thank you for trying to help. I created the new thread so people other than yourself could try to help as well (given they probably dont want to read through all this all at once to catch up). But if you can help me resolve the issue yourself there’s no need for other people. You’ve definitely gotten closer here. I think there’s probably just one last part that needs to be added. Do you have any idea what that would be?

  • A little mistake correct, and it played now on my test blog: [gigya movie="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/ embed.swf" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" flashVars="hlp=8471697&event=COL75&server=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&pageurl=http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/&nlwa=http://app2.neulion.com/videocenter/nhl/" src="http://nhl.cdn.neulion.net/u/videocenter/ embed.swf" width="640" height="383" quality="high"]

  • It’s still not playing for me. You’ve changed the dimensions of the video back to how it’s supposed to be, the aspect ratio is right now, it’s a little wider like it should be, but it still won’t play. Maybe it still needs the code to play in different browsers? I’m using safari so I mean it’s not an abstract browser or anything. It’s one of the big ones.

  • Yea it doesn’t work in firefox for me either. Using a mac. These videos play for me in safari and firefox when I watch them normally in videocenter, so they do work for a mac, and safari and firefox on a mac. Something is still missing I believe. Again thank you very much for taking the time to help me here.

  • Try other browsers/ upgrade flash / change quality value to low. As [... quality="low"]

  • Well like I said the video still plays for me with the exact same browser when I do it in videocenter. So my flash player is fine. It plays the video in videocenter.

This is the video you are using I believe (i have a lot of them and they all look similar, but this is the one): http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?hlp=8471678&event=FLA557

When i click that, it works, in safari and firefox. So its not the browser of the flash player it has to still be the code.

  • You do have “quality=high” written twice I dont know if you know. Once towards the top before allowfullscreen=”true” and once at the very end. Could this be the problem?

  • It’s not the problem. I think the problem is the embeded play button is not signaling the video to play. We have the appearance of the video here without it actually linking to or activating the video content.

  • Are you still online wpgaurav? I’ve been trying everything here to fix the code but Im doing it half blind right now. I dont understand this stuff like you do. Can you try to finish the code please?
