Hi! When I go into an article on my blog and would like to share it, I copy and paste the url but the url does not match. Instead it continues to redirect to the homepage. Can this be fixed?
The blog I need help with is samaraenroute.wordpress.com.
Hi there,
If I understand you correctly, you want to share your blog.
There are 3 sharing buttons below your post, Press This, Twitter and Facebook.
I have tested they are working correctly.
Sharing a post opens the correct URL in social networking site.https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/
I copy and paste the url but the url does not match. Instead it continues to redirect to the homepage.
Could you please provide some steps to reproduce this.
I copied the URL of one of your post, https://samaraenroute.wordpress.com/2018/01/29/want-to-smile/, and paste it in the address bar. It opens perfectly, no redirect. Thanks Yashitamittal11,
Okay, that helps for social media, though that is not my main concern. I would like to copy and paste certain urls that match certain articles so I can send them through email, text, message, etc. Is there a way to do that?
Every time I click on the url in an article and copy/paste it doesn’t transfer over the appropriate tail. It sticks to the domain name + .com and that’s it.
Thank you so much for your help!
Does this happen in all the browsers?
Can you please check this issue with a different browser and see if the problem persists?
Yes I’ve checked on both browsers that I have; Safari and Firefox.
Above is a pasted URL from inside an article. See what I mean?
Hi there,
I hope you don’t mind if I jump in here. I’ve taken a look at your domain, the nameservers are not pointing to WordPress.com.
Name Server: NS71.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
Name Server: NS72.DOMAINCONTROL.COMBut when we access the URL, it shows us your wordpress.com site. Whenever we hover over the links, the browser still shows the wordpress.com address. However, when we clicked on the link, the URL at the address bar remains as samaraenroute.com.
This looks like a domain masking technique. Could you check with GoDaddy if your domain has setup a redirect with forward for your domain to your wordpress.com site?
https://my.godaddy.com/help/manually-forward-or-mask-your-domain-or-subdomain-422If you wish to use a custom domain for your wordpress.com site, the best way is still by using domain mapping. However, you need an upgraded plan in order to map your custom domain.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/Please find out from your domain registrar and let us know.
We’ve just found out that your site samaraenroute.com is using the iframe tag to embed the entire wordpress.com site.
I’m not sure if we can support you on this so I’m adding a modlook tag for staff assistance.
And just a heads-up, the technique you’re using on your site is actually considered as hotlinking and it’s violating WordPress’s user guidelines: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-guidelines/
By violating the guidelines, it’ll get your site suspended. I would suggest that you remove the iframe from your samaraenroute.com site to avoid your WordPress.com site to get suspended.
As I mentioned in my previous reply, the best way to use a custom domain on your WordPress.com site is still via domain mapping.
1. Thanks to everyone for your input!!
2. I am so technologically disabled that I truly don’t understand the last 3 comments. What is hot linking, and how am I doing that? Also – what is iframe? And site mapping….?I tried to find a phone number to call someone to get staff help but can’t find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get some actual help on this outside of community forums?
Thanks!
There’s no phone support on WordPress.com. Paid plan users get direct support from staff via live chat and email whereas free plan users post their questions here. I have added the modlook tag to get staff attention on this.
May I know how did you setup your site by using the samaraenroute.com domain?
Okay, I think I might have found the answer. Your domain could be using the forward + masking technique offered by GoDaddy, your domain registrar.
https://my.godaddy.com/community/Managing-Domains/forward-with-masking-OG-tags/td-p/65074Could you contact GoDaddy support and ask them to check if that’s the case? If yes, request them to remove it for you.
As for domain mapping, it’s the correct procedure to use your custom domain samaraenroute.com for your samaraenroute.wordpress.com site. After it has been done, you will not have issues about the article links.
Take this post (https://samaraenroute.wordpress.com/2018/03/12/top-5-reasons-why-i-love-curacao/) as the example, after you’ve done the domain mapping on WordPress.com, the URL of the post will become https://samaraenroute.com/2018/03/12/top-5-reasons-why-i-love-curacao/.
But as I mentioned earlier, you need an upgraded plan to map the custom domain (samaraenroute.com) to your samaraenroute.wordpress.com site. The cheapest option is the Personal Plan which is $48 per year.
https://wordpress.com/pricing/Good morning –
I am happy to clear up some of these questions. Your domain was purchased at GoDaddy and you want to use it with WordPress.com. There are 2 options to achieve that result.
1. You leave the domain registered at GoDaddy and you use the DNS configuration to point the domain to WordPress.com. This will map the domain to us. That means that when someone goes to the domain in their browser they see the WordPress.com version of the site you have built.
In order to set up domain mapping you first need to add a plan to your account. That price includes the mapping fee. Take a look at those and figure out which option is going to be best for your project and budget: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Next, you can connect the domain. Click on My Sites – Domains – Add – Map it From here, you’ll enter the domain and get it connected to your WordPress.com user account.
Now, you need to go back to GoDaddy and ask them to point the name servers to WordPress.com. They need to change the name servers to be
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMAll of this is outlined on this support page which you can read and also share with GoDaddy support: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
It sounds like your domain is new, and if that’s the case, you won’t be able to proceed with the second option, which is to transfer the domain to us. With this option the domain leaves the GoDaddy system entirely and would be registered with WordPress.com instead. A domain has to be at least 60 days old before that can happen.
Wow thank you all for your help!!
My site is not new… it’s about 6 years old. I thought that I did have a plan…I pay about $40 a month…. or is that GoDaddy I’m paying? I do apologize – I find the whole thing quite confusing.
I figured out what the domain masking meant though and I removed it and my initial problem is fixed. Everything else I’m not really sure what you mean but I think I’ll be okay for now.
Thanks again for all of you help!
I thought that I did have a plan…I pay about $40 a month…. or is that GoDaddy I’m paying?
Yes, that is for GoDaddy. Our plans are only billed 1x per year. We don’t collect monthly payments.
It’s going to be much cheaper for you to get set up on WordPress.com. Our prices at wordpress.com/pricing/ include your hosting. At the moment, you’re paying $40/month just in hosting by the sounds of it.
You can follow the mapping instructions in my last reply or transfer the domain to us. Here are those details: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Since you’re currently self hosted, you’ll need to import your site on to WordPress.com. There’s a step-by-step guide to get you through that process:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/
I’ll answer your questions along the way. Write back here with any follow ups. The first step is to figure out which plan you want, add it to the account, and then decide if you’re going to map or transfer the domain to us.
Okay I didn’t think I was self hosted….. and sorry I pay $40/year not month, my mistake. I created this whole site through WordPress.com and then what I (thought) I did was pay to get rid of the WordPress.com tail at the end. I don’t know how I got separate from WordPress … so if I follow those steps I will now be paying WordPress and no longer GoDaddy?
Hi there,
I created this whole site through WordPress.com
Yes, you created your website https://samaraenroute.wordpress.com/ on WordPress.com
and then what I (thought) I did was pay to get rid of the WordPress.com tail at the end
As staff mentioned above, you purchased a custom domain through GoDaddy and then pointed it to your website on WordPress.com. But the way you pointed it is not correct, that is the reason your links are not correct and you are not able to share them.so if I follow those steps I will now be paying WordPress and no longer GoDaddy?
If you map your domain here using Domain Mapping, you will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain. This plan includes hosting but you still need to pay GoDaddy for your domain registration.https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
If you transfer your domain to WordPress.com, you will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to transfer in a domain. Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain or transfer/map one you already own. You don’t need to pay GoDaddy for domain name as that will be provided to you free with the plan here.

Different plans on WordPress.com:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/Okay, all of this makes sense now! Thank you so much for your time and help! :)
