The ads will only appear when you are logged out, and possibly only when your cookies have been cleared. Also, I’ve heard that they never appear if you view wordpress.com blogs in Firefox. I haven’t confirmed that though. They will also only appear (if they do) when you come from a search engine (possibly only Google). They are also random. You might go to your blog logged out and cookies cleared many times without seeing the ads. I also understand they only appear on the single-post pages of your blog. Not the main blog page.

I certainly agree there should be more transparency around the whole issue.
I have only seen Adsense a couple of times on my blog. Certainly less than five; then again, when am I ever logged out?
And your avatar link may not work here because it’s possible your blog has been defined as Mature: you would have to contact staff directly and inquire about that. I’m not aware of any other reason, IF it worked before and you haven’t changed anything, that would result in that change.

@jessicalifland-Why surprised? It’s right there on the WordPress.COM “Features” page, and a quick tag search here in the forums would have returned the seven pages worth of threads marked with the Adsense tag. You’re running your own website, only your blog is hosted here. You have the choice of moving your blog or running Adsense on your non-blog pages? Just sayin’…

The examples TypePad vs WordPress gives, are horrifying. Yes, these methods may generate more income for wordpress, but is it really worth it?
Apparently, yes. As for the Akismet widget, you also have the option of removing it from your sidebar if you don’t like what the colors are doing to your blog. No one is forcing you to display it.

I hadn’t thought of this. Listen, I’m already paying for space at hostmonster, but I’m not using it yet (had a plan). Do you mean that I could move my blog there? I see in a post above that I could download the software, and ‘self-host.’
1. Where do you download the software from?
2. Could you be a little more specific about self-host? What problems does that bring? -
A small related question: what does this do to the layout of the blog? For example, I modified the Tarski theme with the paid css upgrade. Will adsense, when or if it appears, mess up my layout? And where exactly on the screen does it appear? (I haven’t seen it on my blog yet, so I can’t tell).

Firts, check with hostmonster. Some hosts are set up for wordpress and make it easy and some are not.
1. The software is downloaded from http://wordpress.ORG/ (some hosts have a one button install feature).
2. You are responsible for all backups, maintenance, upgrades and troubleshooting. If your blog goes down for whatever reason, you have to figure out what the problem is and fix it. You need to be familiar with FTP so that you can upload themes and plugins. The wordpress.ORG forum is not quite as supportive as this one either (just the way it is).

To sacredpath: Well, I can’t understand a thing Hostmonster says! And I don’t know FTP. And this site sure is supportive (yourself being an element). That’s why I haven’t implemented my vision for a fiction website there. I sure do appreciate the heads-up. Even though you yourself host your own, I don’t think I’m ready yet. So I’m going to try to see what kind of ads are on my blog. I don’t mind neon, I don’t mind hype, the rest of the page has dignity; it’s porn that would be the deal-breaker.

Yes, when things go wrong, it can be a mess when you are self-hosted.
WordPress.com has restrictions, but it also has a lot of advantages regarding backups, maintenance, etc., and it allows you to focus on blogging instead of the geeky stuff in the shadows.

(@tsp-Just as an aside, a few days ago when the Cutline and Benevolence style sheets decided to take an afternoon stroll together, it was very interesting to learn that not all themes have styling for adsense.)

But there WILL be a lot of people confused about whether this means THEY can run ads or not. And they’re mostly going to be the dumb, repeat-the-question-repeatedly-and-be-outraged-the-answer-doesn’t-change types, too.
