Adding content to a text wiget

  • Hi I have been having problem getting pics ect into my sidebar then found the following thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/want-to-put-an-image-in-a-text-widget?replies=9 and I took Tess1s advise and copied the code from a draft and inserted it into a text widget But as you will see the images and words are not spacing the way I would like them to…..I`m not good at code and want to know if anything needs to be added to the code to give me better spacing…can anyone help me ????
    My Blog is curryfamilyadventures.wordpress.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • There are lots of codes – for arrangement, alignment, resizing, line breaks, space, borders… You’d better start by searching the forum (as well as being more specific as to what “the way you would like them” might be).

In this forum, the ones who deal with html tips more than other volunteers happen to be 1tess and me. So if you click on “Member” under her name or mine, you’ll find several threads that will probably be useful to you.

In the meantime, since you’re still not familiar with html, I suggest you put each item in a separate text widget (in contrast to other widgets, you can add text widgets as many times as you like). That will give you fewer problems to solve.

Note that the links you’ve put in the widget lead to category pages instead of individual posts. To get to a single post (and its URL) click on its title. Also note that two of the links don’t work, because you’ve written the beginning of the URL (the http-dots-slashes part) twice.

    Other things to note:

    a) Are you sure you want all those framed posts to be stickies, i.e. remain above more recent ones? My guess is no.

  • thecurrys,
Also, Please, please, consider linking your name to your blog?
( http://curryfamilyadventures.wordpress.com/ ) > that is your real, clickable link!

How to make your name link to your blog:
Go into your dashboard -> users -> your profile -> then scroll down to 'contact info'. In the spot where it says 'website' fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.
Now... when you comment here and on other blogs, your name will link to your blog. If you do this before you post your request for help, it will allow forum volunteers to be able to help you quicker since they won't have to ask you for a link and wait until you come back to post one.

    best wishes~

  • Thankyou of course I should of been more specific sorry `bout that.
I have taken your advise a put them into seperate text widgets….I didn`t know you could have more than one…Thankyou very much and I have corrected all those little bugs ie 2 x http// also…I do what the posts sticky but thanks for checking.

  • thecurrys,
You almost have the link to your name working, but get rid of “wp-admin/profile.php” :-)

  • Thanks so much 1 tess,what would I do without you….your #1 fan.
    Is that better ???
I`m learning all the time thanks to people like you…cheers.

  • Your link is functional now!

So on to learning about fixing the problem with pasting from Word:

If you continue to do so, it is very likely that you will break your theme. You could accidently push your sidebars to the bottom, and the text can become more and more erratic: bold sometimes, big, small, italic—uncontrolled.
If you insist on pasting from Word, use the “paste from Word” button in the visual editor
    http://faq.wordpress.com/2008/09/09/bringing-content-into-wordpress-from-microsoft-word-screencast/

In the visual editor, copy/cut the formated text, then switch to HTML and paste. Switch back the the visual editor, then format the text as you like. That will remove all the excess code which could break your theme.

  • The easiest way to write a text widget, if you don’t normally write in code, is to make it as if it’s a draft Post and use the visual editor to get it the way you want, then click the HTML tab and copy all the code. Paste that into the text widget.

  • Thanks SO much to you both….Raincoaster I have been doing it the way you suggest
above since reading another forum thread where this method was suggested…
It makes it so much easier for me to do it that way…and believe me I need easy lol.
1 Tess thank you for all your guidance I use word because I am a hopeless speller
and it corrects the spelling and since I had a problem early on in the blogging process
as my text was stretching out into my right sidebar….and I think it was raincoaster
who pointed ou the word issue….So from then on all posts down from the maiden voyage
I have used word to draft my entry then spell checked it on there then copied it into
notepad then copy and pasted it from there into my blog PHEW I know but at least i know
how to do that…..I`ve doing it that way okay or will it still cause problems ?
thankyou 1 Tess for teaching me an alternative I will try it that way from now on.
Should I go back and change my other posts ??
I cant see any problems in the text when I view the posts from my end…how do you
pick up that I`ve used word ??

  • thecurrys – Do you know the WordPress editor has a built-in spell checker? If you’d like to write in something like Word that won’t mess up your blog, check out Windows Live Writer from Microsoft. It’s free and made for blogging.

  • Hi ellaella thankyou for your reply to my issues (I have many of them lol)
I had no idea that word editor has a spell checker…I`ve just had a look
and now I feel rather silly as it was there in front of me all the time.
Oops that`s what I get for not looking outside the box…huh ?? Thankyou all
again…..what should I do to clean up that (word) mess I`ve made so far ??

  • Yes, clean it up! As I said above:

In the visual editor, copy / cut the formated text, then switch to HTML and paste. The HTML editor will remove all formatting. You will have to replace your picture, but that was also affected by the extra formating in the caption anyway.

Switch back the the visual editor, then paste. Format the text as you like using the tools in the visual editor.

  • Hi 1 Tess…..Is that better ?? Think I have done it okay .

  • “How do you pick up that I’ve used word??” Word introduces junk stuff; and that stuff shows up in the source code of your page.

You can very well use Word – just don’t paste directly from it: use the “Paste as plain text” or “Paste from Word” buttons.

  • Thanks panaghiotisadam, you techie people are very clever huh ??
Code ect is like rocket science to me…and it shows huh ??? LOL.
