Add a Guest Author

Using Escutcheon theme (WordPress.com) and do a lot of reblogs. The theme inserts written by ‘Wag ‘n Bietjie’ for every post. Ideally I would like to either remove ‘Written by..’ or add an author Guest Author. I don’t wish to change to another theme just because of this issue. Hello,
You can use the CSS editor to customize the appearance of any WordPress.com site. It works by allowing you to add your own CSS styles, which allows you to override the default styles of your Theme.
You need either a WordPress.com Premium or WordPress.com Business plan to be able to add custom CSS to your site.

As mentioned Gina, I am on the free plan… so I do not have access to CSS code. Adding a widget is also not possible for the same reason. Most readers of my posts look past the ‘written by..’ but it can be confusing to others. Thanks for responding.

Yep, sorry, I saw you were on the free plan, that’s why I wrote you needed WordPress.com Premium or WordPress.com Business to be able to customize the CSS. But I understand if it is not possible for you to upgrade by any reason.
Actually, I would be a reader who looked past the “Written by” and noticed the “Originally posted on” on top of the reblogged posts, only. True though, it might be confusing for others.
As you can not access the CSS, you can not fully remove the “Written by” part but how about changing your display name to something less specific (like “Written by Author” for example)? In this case, your own posts will have the same writer info too, though.
That’s just an idea.

I just checked your test post. “The Author” seems and sounds pretty good to me. It can refer both to you when you publish something of your own and to the original author when you reblog, so it makes the trick.

re: author byline and author profiles
The point of displaying an author name is to differentiate the posts on a multi-author site. Many themes don’t display the author byline unless there is more than one official user on the site. See here https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#author
Regardless of the theme, and provided the theme is designed to display an author, bylines will only display now if there are at least two authors, who both have at least one published post in the blog.
Very few themes have an author profile with a gravatar that displays below every post. The data is derived from here > Dashboard > Users > My Profile > About You (section) and anything you add there appears on your Gravatar profile page as well.
If the author profile does not appear on the live demo site for your theme then it is not a feature provided by that theme.

Agreed. As I am primarily reblogging other author posts and occasionally doing a post of my own the change will be a much better fit than having the theme declare all posts as being mine. Also the start of the post of a reblogged article declares: “Originally posted by…” – this will create greater visibility for the true author and less confusion. Thank you all, I consider the matter to be resolved within the confines of available options. rOn
