  I am new to WordPress. I want to customize my site but don’t seem to be able to get past the ‘go premium’ button to do so! I am in another country and do not have $300 to pay for the privilege of being able to customize. Is there a way to do so, use the editor and build my site in a free plan?

  You should have quite a few customization options available to you, even with a free site. Premium allows you to also customize your CSS.
