People start blogs for many reasons — from promoting their business to documenting their travels. For some, blogging is a form of service: by sharing their stories, they hope to help others. Here, four bloggers reflect on what motivates them to inspire others through their writing.

A Thought Process

Every time I would put my pen to paper, I felt as if it allowed me to explore a new part of me. It allowed me to feel alive in a whole new sense.
There are so many people out there, and each of them has a story. And it’s really heartbreaking to see that every day, millions of stories die without ever being heard. I feel that it is my responsibility as a human being to bring these stories together, to unite them to create a whole new world where lives are more important than any materialistic thing.
I’m sure this sounds pretty big, but I need to start somewhere, right? I want to be fearless on the pursuit of what sets my soul on fire, and I feel blogging might be my first big step into an apparently impossible mission.
Living, Learning and Sharing Inspiration
I started my blog as a means of healing from the suicides of both my parents (10 years apart). In the process, I connected with people who shared the experience and created a space where victims of a highly stigmatized event (I often refer to the surviving family and friends as “forgotten victims”) can talk through their grief, guilt, and other debilitating emotions without judgment in order to get to the other side and get on with their lives.
As the years went by, my blog has focused more on life lessons and less on family suicide, though it does still come up on occasion. We are all imperfect beings and it helps to know that everyone else out there is as imperfect as we are. So these days, I post my triumphs but also those times when I fall flat on my face, because the truth is I learn a lot more when I have to pick myself back up, and my readers seem to think so too.
Beckie’s Mental Mess
Two years ago I learned I had mental health disorders as well as addiction to alcohol. I was diagnosed with bipolar II, severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia. As an added bonus, I had suicidal ideation for close to a year. My life was spiraling out of control. Before I knew I suffered from mental illness disorders, I self-medicated myself in order to end my life. I was thrown into being homeless. I was destitute, alone, and ashamed beyond words. After my stint in the hospital, I was mandated to a mental health facility where I experienced group-therapy sessions, as well as one-on-one therapy to assist me with regaining my life and putting the pieces back together.
Almost a year had gone by when I began my blog. A shared journey of what I have learned, and what I still educate myself with every day. I did not want anyone to suffer the way I had. I wanted to open a forum in which people could share their experiences and help one another. My blog became a quest to educate not only the people who suffered from all of the above, but to educate people who are trying to understand what their loved ones or friends are going through.

I have been inspired to blog as I had been itching to write for so long but didn’t know where to turn or how to get my writing read.
A recent quote has become the foundation stone for me: “Writers are guardians of memory.” It still gives me goosebumps to say that. Suddenly all the things that were bubbling around in my head to be shared had a value and a place on this planet. My writing down thoughts, experiences, and observations meant that I was preserving them as if in a buried, sealed container that could be opened by people from the future to get a glimpse of what lives and times have been experienced. That is the biggest reason for me to write.
With trepidation I set up a blog on WordPress.com (until now I have said that I don’t “do” social media) and have been posting installments of my story.
The thrill it gives me to wake up and see that someone in Australia, the U.S., or even China and Algeria has looked at my writing is beyond belief.
What motivates you to write? Join the conversation in the comments! (If you have an interesting story to share, you can always drop us a line.)
Its fascinating to know & read the different aspirations we have to actually get up & do what we tell ourselves we going to do.What’s common amongst us is that we are burning of passion.lovely.

So many reasons to blog. “He who cannot howl will not find his pack.”–Charles Simic. I blog and read other blogs to find those in my pack. As a person who has lived a double life from an early age, one being the public self and the other the private, in-my-head self, blogging allows those two selves to merge into one voice, one howl. I like the freedom of the upturned faces, howling together into what I will call the beauty and wilderness of the human soul.

For a very long time I never knew what i wanted to do in life. Every time i found a hobby or skill i ever took it to the next level. But one thing I didnt stop doing wawas thinking, having ideas, writing, andao many big thoughts inside my big head wanted to be shared but i didnt know how to express them until now. I using this aas an opportunity to better myself while entertaining others. I want to go far in life with writing and this iis how i plan to start. I dont want to do thing the way others do i want to start in my own special way and enjoy life. I have so much to say and this is how i want to start. I want to inspire other to plan therthere lice the way that they want to not how others expect them to.

My reasons was to document my PhD journey. It has been long, unrewarding and frustrating, I wanted to vent my frustrations and challenge my negative thinking. Still 3-4 years to go, so
much blogging ahead. Keeps me sane.

This is a great post. I love to write and it’s very cathartic in some ways, to get everything out of my mind and into a blog. I posted a blog before here, but that’s when I followed religion, and now that I’ve separated from it, I want to share my journey. Blogging also gives us a way to connect with others in a very unique and insightful way. 🙂

I have only just begun my journey as a writer/blogger. I’m a lifetime outdoorsman and since I was 13 I’ve been mesmerized by a well written story. So many great outdoor writers have faded away and for seemingly no reason. Is started my blog to challenge myself creatively and as an outlet from social media. Hopefully someone will find something positive and entertaining in what I’m doing…at least that’s my hope.

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I started my blog to just vent, process my thoughts, and keep friends and family informed. Now, nearly 7 years later, I still use it for that purpose, but it’s also evolved into an education and awareness resource for other prostate cancer patients and their families. It was really helpful to me to be able to connect with other patients soon after my diagnosis, and I’m just returning the favor. http://dansjourney.com

We all have reasons and whatever these reasons are, they are noble in their own ways. Mine is but a repository of clogging thoughts and feelings which are difficult for me to express. So I’m trying another mode of expression and that’s writing through blogs. I hope I can reach out on you, too and win friends. Let us all be blessed!

I always overthink and over analyse and there is a continuous discussion in my head 🙂 about my actions or about things happening around me. Although I don’t react instantly I will analyse the whole situation and think about different ways it could have ended. I love observing people and their emotions and appreciate them within myself.
By writing I could bring out all these and pour out certain ideas of mine which reduced the chatter in my head 😉 I feel light and enjoy the freedom it gives me. Reading stories is my passion which helps in writing with a style too. There are many in the world think alike us and by reading their words brings a closeness with them and the feeling that someone else will also relate the same with my words brings joy!

Blogging is a way for me to pursue my passion of writing in a way where I can share and interact with others. As a Christian blogger, I am also able to spread the light of Christ and share His word through my posts. In turn, I am also discovering God through these posts. The overall experience is amazing; blogging keeps me strong in my faith and in my writing!

What we earn and learn is a collective asset and therefore need to be shared with fellow human beings. We grow up and succeed doing something great has certainly has others contribution as well. That’s how we become more sensible, civilized and love to leave the world better than we inherited. Its our responsibility to keep sharing our successes and follies within and outside the family, communities and societies. Its a conscious decision.

Why I blog? write? do? The purpose is always the question. I hope to connect with and share thoughts with people who relate. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and that can come in many forms. I think blogging will let me, at least in part, feel that purpose.

To write or to blog? Same. Rewind to about 6 years back, and you could always see me post things about a soccer club I so much admired. Well, I stopped for a very lengthy period. Isn’t 6 years that long? However, this time around, my spark to blog came from attending a sort of “make money online” event and bam, my interest in blogging was rejuvenated. While I still do not make a single dime on my blog since my initial push was financially-related (you can comprehend from my type of person that I should strive to be honest and truthful, humble though), the zeal to share the little knowledge I have accrued about my noble religion has kept me moving “like a moving train”.

I am motivated by a need to write. It really brings life and energy to me. I also want to use my parenting blog to help other parent have moments of “aha! Someone else has had the same experience as me and survived 😉 so I must be doing ok”.

I blog because I felt a need to have an outlet for my creative energies. Suprisingly, it felt very satisfying seeing your inner thoughts on a screen, it helped me to analyse my opinions and criticise it. Thank you for sharing your own personal thoughts with us!

The blog is a great way for me to document the everyday adventures I experience while spending time on a bike. At the same time it is a great way to get an overview of my progression as a rider. Being able to share all this with the whole world is really awesome.

The main reason I write is because this is the only place I really feel I am actually alone with my thoughts but at the same time able to express them. Sort of a way for my to understand my thoughts before sharing them.

I started writing about two weeks back because writing is my life. I love writing and want to change the world in my own little way.

Great post. I blog for the following reasons:
(1) I write ideas that the world needs. I provide food to a mentally starved population.
(2) I discovered that journals are rarely read and under appreciated. A daily journal is good (and I keep one) but as technology progresses, attention spans suffocate. I want to provide quick meaningful lessons with actionable challenges to my posterity.
(3) Exercise discipline. If I can’t sit down to write every day, how can I ever write the books I intend to deliver?

I write because it is a way for me to share this new chapter of my life. I have wanted to teach abroad for almost six years now after a professor inspired me to do so. After years and years of setbacks and giving up on my dreams after listening to the opinions of others, I finally took the leap and went for it. Now I am here in Indonesia, as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant and the common phrase I heard from everyone I told before leaving for this country was, “Wow, I wish I could have done something similar when I was your age” I want to write as a way to inspire young minds and like-minded individuals that they can achieve their dreams! I have so much going on in my brain and writing all these thoughts down allows me to reflect daily which has helped me improve myself so much. Awesome article!

This was so interesting to read and really resonated with me. I started blogging in 2017 because I wanted to share things with the world but also I really wanted to write pieces that inspired people and motivated them to be the best version of themselves! I love hearing other people’s stories and journeys and I hope we all continue sharing them.

Loved hearing what has driven others in starting a blog. I think for me, it was a space away from work and family life to write some of my life experiences. Plus, my grammar and punctuation skills need some serious work.

Writing is where I feel most free and inspiring others to find the happy in their life is what motivates me. My life was a tailspin for a long time and I hope by sharing my stories on how I finally found happiness helps others who feel alone as I once did understand that they are truly supported.

Blogging for the reader and the writer is a form of healing and connection. I am happy to see the writers in this post journeying to a place of happiness and creating a space of non-judgement and love. The motivation of these bloggers is so beautiful and inspirational!

I just started my WordPress blog! I was inspired by Glenn Doyle Melton who said on the “Magic Lessons” podcast, “I want to be a truth teller.” Me too. I am recovering from panic disorder which changed the trajectory of my life and has forced me to face things I was just not ready to face. Anxiety and other mental health issues are still stigmatized in many societies. I want others to join me on the journey of recovery, authenticity, and healing

One of the greatest parts about living in our modern world is the ability to reach such a vast audience in a way that wasn’t previously thought possible. As a blogger and indie author, I couldn’t appreciate this post more!

Writing is my way of clearing my mind of all these thoughts in my head. It gives me clarity on different aspects of life and helps me relax. I also feel by sharing my thoughts I may inspire or help someone in a positive way. Writing is my outlet of expression.

I had sort of postpartum stress not exactly depression that’s why I’m calling it “stress”. My husband always encouraged me to write blogs. He was right in saying that you’ve so much experience to share since you’re at home, hence I started writing about baby care and concerns related to parenting.

I wanted a seat at the table with the greats. I might end up being one of the cloths but that’s ok as well. Putting words to thoughts and feelings and situations has been a journey and I doubt it ever stops. As a writer sometimes you are glorious in your insights and other times absolutely clueless. Swinging between those two states, is being human and the reason I keep coming back to my blog.

I write because I can. It gives me a sense of pleasure when I find out that my writing (me, a little girl from Nigeria) has inspired someone. The knowledge that people would read my writing, identify with it, and use the message in their lives just makes me happy.
