At Design.blog, nonprofit founder and former magazine journalist Lisa Katayama writes about the power of stories in an increasingly complex world.

As an adult, my first chosen career was as a magazine journalist. I learned that the public always has an appetite for a good human story, and that—if you dig deep enough—everybody has a story worth sharing. I also realized that it’s always better if people can tell their own stories, rather than having others tell it for them.
Identity is complex. Each and every one of us experiences being human so differently. We use categories like age, race, gender, ethnicity, and nationality to define, protect, to create a sense of belonging—but no single category is useful for telling anyone’s full story.
In her popular TEDTalk, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks about the danger of a single story. “The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete,” she says. This realization—that every individual’s story is truly unique and that the best narrator for one’s true experience is herself—was what eventually led me out of journalism.
What if people could tell their own stories?
How are you using WordPress.com to tell your own story?
Love this.

Wonderful read! Very rightly pointed out, the truest expression comes from the one who has experienced it.

I’m sure it would be an amazing read. I’m working on my own story and seeing where it takes me and my tiny family. Thank you for your post; I enjoyed reading it.

I started out writing about writing, but it was when I shared a very personal story that my WordPress blog went crazy, read by the thousands on every inhabited continent. https://mlmillard.wordpress.com/2016/05/17/im-just-a-girl-standing-in-front-of-a-jazz-band/

I use my blog at campbellsworld.wordpress.com to tell all about everything I experience. To introduce people to a blind person, who also suffers from mental illness in real time. To share otherâs work, thus showing who I am by sharing what Iâm interested in.
My story is given one post at a time. I use it to advertise my book, and to talk about upcoming projects.
Blogging is my way of communicating.

Hi Lisa, what an interesting piece you wrote just now. I started to blog last Friday I think, and my blog was turning into a memoir. I was blogging a lot of personal and very intimate details of myself but omitting to use any name, places other than my own.
I have stopped writing personal intimate details as I actually feel and was told many times that there is a book in me.
Maybe next year I will start that.
Thank you for that most useful blog.
It’s true no one else can tell your story.
Good luck with your future.
Cheers Mo X

I created a blog a few years ago when I first started writing on Elance (now Upwork). I wasn’t a very good blogger I only had a few posts. Recently, I decided to revive my online writing career and found that if you want an online job, you’d better have a blog. I’m still not very good at it, but I am trying to keep it alive. Who knows? I might land that really big gig that is going to let me retire soon!

I found it impossible to win gigs on elance, and even the ones I was bidding on were ridiculously low amounts of money. I had better luck talking to businesses in person. Still blog, though, and make sure there are no typos! 🙂

I think we do tell our own stories. They’re interwoven in our blog posts, in our topics, in our fiction, in the words and genres we choose and the style we write. They’re in our characters and our themes. I often write about my ancestors and the stories they whisper in my ear, but my characters whisper too. I am in them and they are in me.

My life story. That’s a juicy one with some tough experiences. Growing up in Nigeria, there are expectations (family and societal) which really played a huge part in my lifestyle. My story is unfolding at http://www.chiomaokoyeakpawusi.com.

Indeed, the most powerful and poignant stories are those narrated by the person who lived them and experienced them fully. It’s all about a unique perspective nobody else can emulate. I recently created my own blog here at WordPress in order to connect with people all over the world who share the same passion for writing that I do (http://lilaiamoreliwordsaresacred.wordpress.com).

An interesting perspective. A story will always be more accurate coming from oneself- a secondary source will only tell it from his/her own understanding of what he/she was told – which may not be the message the teller intended passing across. A nice read- author.

I always feel like I should share my story, but then I think about it, and compare it to others and it seems so… unimportant. I really am blessed; the chemicals in my brain just don’t think I am.

I also get that feeling too.

I am using WordPress, starting today, to share meditative personal essays. I don’t know if it counts as storytelling, but it counts as my own.

Really makes you think.
I started blogging because I felt like my life was useless and I just wanted to share my interests and thoughts with other people.
I always want to share my stories but I never could. This has really opened my eyes even more than blogging has, thank you.

I believe it doesn’t matter who is telling the story but how the reader interprets it and what they take from it. There can be many lessons learned from one single story it all depends on who is reading it.

You explained this so simply and perfectly, I love it! I’m slowly finding my own voice on WordPress telling the story as a new young mom. This gives me confidence that good will come out of it, thank you!

Great read.
I think a common pitfall with people wanting to tell their stories is that they feel their stories pale in comparison with what they see in others. What if I can’t tell it properly? I am not good at telling stories? What if it’s not as interesting as I read on other people’s blog?

I believe lately in writing my own stories. Stories of my experiences. Truth is liberation of soul. Some of my blogs are of my stories. It is good for the soul to release it from mind

so true! I started writing my own blog based on my sightings.
sometimes when there’s an issue happening, I used to see it from different point of view, and I explain the story in my blog.

Great post! For a long time I was nervous to write about my life, so I stuck to fictional stories. It is just in the last year that I have found the courage to honestly write about my experiences and the experiences of those around me – it really has helped me gain clarity and perspective.

It would be great to have feedback from a professional like you. It’s a small blog and would not take more than 30 seconds to read.

This is so true. I have always used writing as a way to tell my story, only recently I have started publishing so other people can see they aren’t alone.

Very eye-catching topic! The thing is journalists may be able to tell stories in a more skillful and intriguing way, like yours for insance, but not everyone is able to do that. I came to blogging on WP and wrote my own stories but it doesn’t seem like many people read them…lol…Haha…there is something to do with writing skills I suppose..

I am completely new to wordpress, blogging etc., but started my blog this week! And reading this reassured me I am on the right path!!! The stories I tell on it are my own personal journeys, especially with Depression. And nobody can tell them better than the traveller themselves! 🙂

wordpress is a space where I can talk about me everyday issues that people do not want to hear about. At least on here they can choose to read it or not to.
This is a great post.

To be honest, publishing articles in wordpress is just for compliance only in my subject- Computer2. But as a future educator, whose heart is in pen, I realise I have to embrace what nature has intended for me by exploring the wide ground of the site. Thanks WordPress!
