We blog for a million different reasons, but in the end, we’re all storytellers. Creative Writing Challenges are here to help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and writing styles.
To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post, to generate a pingback and help others find the challenges. Please make sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge. We’ll highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Friday, and in our monthly newsletter.

Health and wellness. That old saying tells us that if you have your health, you have everything. However, health can mean much more than physical wellness. This week, we want to know what it means to you.
For some of us, health means being able to get up every morning to go for a run. For others, it’s about finding balance in your day, whether through yoga, art, therapy, or faith. For others, health is about self-acceptance and finding what moves you toward the best possible version of you.
Within the WordPress.com community, there are many bloggers sharing their experiences with healthy living, like Thyme and Tea‘s collection of yoga poses. Sites like Broken Light Collective, explore mental health from an artistic perspective; the girl in the cat frame glasses bravely shared her story of suicide (and moving on). Other courageous bloggers, like thechymeeradiaries and (meta)Marsha, talk about navigating life with breast cancer.
For this week’s creative writing challenge, tell us about what health means to you. Have you struggled with an illness, physical or emotional? Ee’d be honored to hear your story — what got you through that time? How it has changed your perspective? Are you a fitness fanatic? Let us know about how you got interested in athleticism and the ways it affects your life. Are you more of a couch potato, but find zen in knitting, crafting, or painting? Let us know what brings you happiness and balance, through physical effort or mental calm.
Need some ideas to get started?
- Write from the perspective of a first timer. Remember the first time you started running/meditating/drawing? How did it make you feel? Did you reach that perfect moment of calm right away, or did it take some work?
- Tell us your story. For better or worse, we have all gone through periods in our lives when we may not have felt our best, emotionally or physically. If you’re not yet open to sharing your story, write a fiction piece about someone working through a difficult period.
- Your peak. What hobby makes you feel your best? Do you get a “runner’s high” during runs? How about feeling ecstatic while immersed in cooking? Hey, even an excellent nap can feel pretty awesome.
- A recipe for wellness. For every person in the world, there is an opinion on the best way to live/eat/exercise/sleep/etc. What do you think is the recipe for a good life?
We look forward to hearing your stories!

Thanks for the prompt. Healthiness is entirely up to the individual, ta least it seems that way to me. Both to judge it and create it.

I wrote this a while ago but posted it only recently. Its about perception of health of what I’ve grown up with. I don’t know if it completely fits with the challenge but parts of it does.

I wrote this a couple weeks ago but it’s certainly relevant to today’s topic. Taking care of our mental health is important. When we don’t it shows up in our life and in our work. I write about it here in leadership – 10 Signs of an Unhealthy Leader: http://karenzeigler.com/2013/07/16/10-signs-of-an-unhealthy-leader/
