We blog for a million different reasons, but in the end, we’re all storytellers. Creative Writing Challenges are here to help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and writing styles.

To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post, to generate a pingback and help others find and join the challenges. Please make sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge. We’ll keep an eye on the tag and highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Friday.

This week, tell us a story based on this photo:

Two unknown chefs in an unknown kitchen, preparing an unknown meal.

  • Who are these the chefs? What’s their relationship? Are they mentor and mentee? Begrudging rivals?
  • Where in the world are they?
  • What are they making? What’s the occasion? Are they plating the meal for a couple’s intimate anniversary dinner, or preparing to poison the queen?

Worried that you don’t write fiction? Don’t be! There are lots of options here to create a post that uses the photo as a jumping-off point but pulls from your own experience:

  • When was the last time you had a truly transcendent meal? Where were you? What did you eat? Who were you with?
  • Is there someone with whom you love working closely? Someone you have to work with, but wish you could escape?
  • Is “chef” a job you could see yourself having? What kind of workplace would you prefer?

Finally, a few logistical details:

  • Your post doesn’t actually have to be 1,000 words. Use as many (or as few) words as your story needs.
  • Feel free to download the photo and insert it into your own posts, crediting this one.
  • As always, be sure to use the DPchallenge tag so we can find each of your posts.

As with the other “1,000 Words” challenges, we know you’ll take this in directions we’d never dream of (and that the people in the photo would be tickled/amazed/horrified/flattered to hear). We can’t wait to start exploring the worlds you create.

  1. How do we know who or which story won? I suggest that you send links to the best story of the week to all participants by email. That’ll help us gauge ourselves to know whether we’re growing or not.

    1. It’s not a contest, so there are no winners! We highlight some of our favorite posts on Freshly Pressed each Friday ( http://en.wordpress.com/#!/read/fresh/ ), but that’s it. With so many great (and very different) entries, there’s no way to pick a “best.” We encourage you to click around and visit others’ posts to get a sense of the breadth of people’s responses and see which of them speaks to you.

      If you’d like more specific feedback on a particular post or on your writing in general, feel free to use our Community Pool thread ( https://wordpress.com/dailypost/category/community-pool/ ), published on Sundays.


      1. If you’d still like a winner, check out write200.wordpress.com.

        Each week one writer contributes 1 word. Other writers produce 200 words in response, inspired by the word prompt.

        End of the week, the contributor reads them all and chooses a winner, who then gets to contribute the next week’s word and judges that week’s entries.

        It’s quick, just 200 words, and at a pace of 1 per week, everyone can keep up!

    Cooking, to me, is about creating something you’re proud of, and making others happy. When I think about restaurant kitchens I think of rude, stressed chefs who are competitive with each other. Maybe this has something to do with my experience as a kitchen hand back when I was 16, I quit that as soon as I could! But after watching programs like Masterchef I see that food is just such an important part of their lives, and after a hard days work they all unite in their passion and love of food. This photo, in my opinion, shows teamwork. The person on the left seems to be mentored from the man on the right, but I think he respects her enough to let her join in on the more special things now, such as these seemingly important meal.
    I always think about what it would be like to become a chef. I’ve decided that rather than work in a busy, stressful kitchen with many other chefs, I would want to work in a small cafe or restaurant, where everyone really appreciates the food, and I can spend time on it. Perhaps owning a small restaurant (with a bookshop on the side!) would be perfect for me. I first thought about this after reading the book ‘Recipe For Life’ by Nicky Pellegrino, and watching ‘Chocolat’, ‘Julie and Julia’, and the Food Channel (I could spend my life watching those programs). I have a good friend, Fran, who I would love to own a restaurant or cafe with. Her family just seems to be full of people who love to cook, and cook the most delicious, inventive things. I would definitely want this restaurant somewhere in the UK or Europe. Walking to the markets every Sunday to test and buy all the delicious local produce would be such a great experience. I would love the kind of life Rachel Khoo has: buying from the market, and then going home to her little cosy home to create amazing recipes.
    Being a judge on programs life Masterchef would be amazing, you get to cook, teach, and then try everyones (usually delicious) meals they created. But I guess to get to be a judge you’d have to become a pretty amazing cook first!
    Oh food, why must you be so delicious?!
