Grand. We’ve hosted a “Big” photo challenge in the past, but for this week’s challenge, we want you to consider not just the size of something, but also that special element: the “wow factor” of a scene or subject that makes a picture so stunning. That magical quality you’re always out looking for and so excited to capture with your camera.
I snapped the shot above on a recent trip to Halong Bay in the north of Vietnam. We visited Vung Vieng, a floating fishing village protected inside a series of karsts, and this rocky spot acts as the village’s “gate” and entry and exit to the bay. We floated toward it in complete awe — it’s a majestic view, and the silhouette of the tiny boat underneath magnifies just how grand this limestone site is.
We want to see your interpretation of grand, from festive holiday city scenes to the Christmas tree in your living room to other shots that will make our jaws drop. We look forward to seeing your images!
— Cheri

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.
Here’s how it works:
1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
3. Follow The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements, and subscribe to our newsletter — we’ll highlight great photos from each month’s most popular challenge.
hi Cheri,

Cheri, that’s truly a grand photo (but I expect no less from you.) I went in a very different direction, but the “wow” factor is still there. What do you think?

I understand this is not a competition but how are we to compete with your photo? Your experience? I have been traveling throughout the United States only, lately. But now Halong Bay is on my wish list. I have friends in Viet Nam. Maybe it’s time to visit? Thank you.

Oh, no — I don’t think these featured images every Friday are here to “compete” with yours. Please don’t think of it that way! They’re (hopefully) inspiration and just an example (and my own interpretation of) the theme. We all have different experiences and have been to different places. I generally find very personal interpretations of our themes to be the most intriguing.
Actually — my dream is to set off on a long-term road trip of the US and visit spots in the country. There’s so much stuff here to see; I have not seen much.

I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I meant it as a compliment. I am not competitive by nature but I see so many beautiful photos and experiences here that I wish I could just take off with my camera and experience it all. Thank you, again.
