Ruins are fascinating: in these physical spaces, the past, present, and future are one, and time becomes fuzzy.

The dark, graffiti-splattered stairwell of Kunsthaus Tacheles, a former art center in Berlin.
I’ve always loved wandering inside and taking photographs of abandoned buildings. Ruins are fascinating: in these physical spaces, the past, present, and future are one, and time becomes fuzzy.
I took the image above one winter in Berlin, Germany, inside the Kunsthaus Tacheles art center, now gone. I’d been exploring a neighborhood and noticed the massive yet decrepit facade of the building, its walls plastered with flyers and quirky artwork. The door was open, so I went inside and up, ’round and ’round multiple flights of stairs, surrounded by darkness, graffiti, and my own fear.
While there was nothing to be scared about — the building housed an artists’ collective and curious tourists explored the place throughout the day — the empty stairwell still gave me chills. The building, once a department store as well as a Nazi prison, and destroyed in World War II, was now empty. But it was full of so many stories, voices, and histories.
For this week’s photo challenge, show us abandoned. You can go literal, as I have, and share a photo of ruins, a desolate place, or your idea of a wasteland. Or you can interpret it in other ways, from images of overlooked things to forgotten people.
In a post created specifically for this challenge, share a photo that shows us abandoned.

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:
- Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
- To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
- Follow The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements, and subscribe to our quarterly newsletter — we’ll highlight great photos from the most popular challenge.
Oh, lovely moody photo and theme…

I Love this topic. I, also, have always been drawn to abandoned places. I think for most people it is the sense of mystery that is has us so captivated. Looking forward to looking at how different people showcase what “abandoned” means to them. Great Topic!
