You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Today’s assignment: write and publish a “who I am and why I’m here” post.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “shitty first draft” (her language). Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.

Here’s the nitty-gritty on publishing a basic post, and here are instructions for adding tags to a post. Welcome to blogging!

  1. I’m not gonna write a post about me because my blog is about discovering music I like & help to promote some artists around me. I don’t see the point with the purpose of my blog, so this comment is the post about me. 😉

  2. Well, after playing around for an hour over lunchtime, I think I’ve managed to customise a theme I’m happy with. Uncluttered; small font; a few categories set-up (if I ever get past post number one); decided on not having a header image; resized the picture within my post so it’s not HUGE.

Yes, all in all a reasonable hour spent.

Problem is, when the second challenge arrives, just to procrastinate over further blogging, I’ll probably rip the theme apart and start again … I love header images, oh yes … big font, no problem …

  3. Hey guys! Here’s my post. I actually wrote it as a page around back and didn’t want to repeat myself haha. So here it is: 🙂

One of my goals for this workshop will be to get to know more people around the world and interact with them. I also want to read more blogs from more people with different cultures and lifestyles etc. I don’t really have time to go search for nice blogs to read and all, so this would be a great opportunity for me to reach out to more bloggers in all corners of the world!

So come over to my page and say hi. I really want to get a chance to know you guys, and look forward to creating bonds with ya’ll as well throughout the month.

    Have a nice day!

  4. Bonjour, all: Since my site, has an About Me pages, I prefer to post its raison d’être there. But the dashboard is so complex that frankly I’ve forgotten where to click in order to revise my About Me. Please help me.
