To the Daily Post Community: Thank You!

Saying goodbye is hard. Celebrating years of community and great blogging is anything but.

Almost seven and a half years ago The Daily Post opened its virtual doors to the WordPress.com blogging community. It’s been an incredible ride, and incredible rides, too, sometimes come to an end. As of the end of this month (and 2,000 Daily Prompts, 380 Photo Challenges, 260 Community Pools, and 100 First Fridays later), we will no longer publish new posts, prompts, or challenges on this site.

Where are we going?

The decision no longer to publish on The Daily Post wasn’t an easy one. We’re enormously proud of what we put out here — and of the hundreds of thousands of stories, essays, photos, and poems members of this community have shared with us over the years. The team behind The Daily Post isn’t going anywhere; we’ll be focusing our attention on other projects that help WordPress.com remain the best place on the web to publish, build an audience, and find a community. We hope to cross paths with many of you on other sites we run, including Longreads and Discover.

Will this site stay online?

Yes. The Daily Post will be around for as long as our servers keep chugging along, which we predict to be roughly 14,320,078 years (give or take). All your conversations, pingbacks, and favorite writing prompts and Blogging U. courses will still be available, and we hope you’ll keep exploring — and enjoying — our deep archive of resources, from beginners’ tips to writing advice to blogging etiquette.

Where can Daily Post bloggers connect with each other and find inspiration?

One thing we know many of you will miss is, well, you. This is a place where many bloggers — including many who were just starting out — found like-minded people to be part of their blogging adventure. We hope you continue to develop friendships and seek out the advice and support of others in the WordPress.com community. Here are some resources to explore:

What happens between now and May 31?

We’ll publish the last First Friday thread this week, as well as a Community Pool post and a Photo Challenge next week. (Daily Prompts will continue through May 31.) We hope you decide to participate in these final posts, and also encourage you to use their respective comment sections to make plans for keeping in touch with all your Daily Post friends.

One last note…

Our mission has always been to inspire others to blog more and to blog better, even if “blogging better” means something quite different in 2018 than it did back in 2010. The editors and contributors who’ve tended to this site have all changed, grown, and evolved, and so have the members of this community. What has stayed consistent — almost miraculously so — is the spirit of openness, respect, and camaraderie of the people who’ve made this place a part of their online journey. Yes, that’s you.

From those of us on the WordPress.com team who’ve contributed to The Daily Post over the years, thank you for being the best blogging community on the web, bar none. It’s been a total joy.

  2. How hard is it for you to put out a one word prompt every day? I think you could construct (or have constructed) a bot to do that job.

    I think this is very, very, very poor way to treat a large number of people, some of whom who start with the Daily Prompt and move on to greater things. I guess you just don’t want to continue it (you don’t see any profit in it?). I doubt I’ll be on WP much longer. Sad, after 5 + years.

  3. No – nonono. I understand things are changing, they always do. That, and death, are the only things certain in life.
    Why should you be different?

    I will try to contribute these last times, and I send my deepest ThankYous and love to you all. Not many people in this world can say they have inspired so many others – as you certainly have done. Wish you all the best for the future, and once again – THANK YOU.

      1. What a great idea! I have only participated in the photo challenges – but you get to know people through prompts. To always see how other people see…and interpret, the same prompt. I read that some other “members” were going to start prompts instead. On their own blogs. Maybe it would be an idea to check them out.

    2. Voids may always remain, and some new ones will open, but hopefully some will be filled with other things. I checked out your blog and now I follow you. Beautiful photos of a place in the world I’m yet to visit and now can see through your eyes.

  7. Endings are sad, but I hope it will bring on new beginnings. I’ll miss the daily prompts and photo challenges.
    Maybe some of us here can get together and inspire each other with prompts and pingbacks and shared posts. I love seeing your photos and ideas and would enjoy continuing to. I’ve met some lovely blogger friends here who I certainly intend to keep in touch with, and I’m always happy to meet more! Connections need not end just because #TheDailyPost is closing up this particular shop. Here’s to a good run, and here’s to more writing and growing connections for us all.

  8. This is most distressing, deplorable, shocking … this is how I have built ‘community; participating whole heartedly with daily posts and weekly photo challenges! Have religiously participated daily/weekly, get a lot of traffic directed to me and try to read three new bloggers each day … how on earth will we connect if this forum is trashed without consultation???

I have met so many amazing, creative and talented people through you and for this I will be forever grateful.   11. Such a shame! I’ve blogged on and off over the past few years but have taken to all Daily Post Work a lot since late last year using it regularly! I’m going to miss the daily prompts, it always helped me make some crazy imaginative story from one word

  14. I’ve read this post yesterday and am still rather amazed by it. Though hundreds of participants of the Weekly Photo Challenge maybe a drop in the bucket of the tens of millions following the Daily Post (and even less than a drop with multiple pings), it still was the last place I (and maybe more than me) had left, in which to find other bloggers and try to create traffic. I really don’t know what will be the point to continue blogging here (or at all).
    How very disappointing…

  16. The thing i really miss will be a platform where i can ask bloggers to come and read my blog or maybe give feedback to a few of them on their sites.. Thats a void which will not be filled easily as blogging is almost a lonely act.. I hope you’l come up with a substitute..

  20. Community Pool has been a more reliable, efficient and quicker way of finding like-minded, interesting and active bloggers than Discover. I wish you wouldn’t take it away. I hope you substitute it with something similar. But thank you for the platform. I wish you guys luck.

  27. Would this be an accurate summation? WordPress is discontinuing the products where every blogger is equal and can join in if they want to. WordPress is keeping the curated products where someone decides who gets a voice.
    You said: “We’re enormously proud of what WE put out here.” I think you should have said, “We’re enormously proud of what all you thousands and thousands of bloggers put out here…”

    1. That’s not entirely accurate. They are talking about the WP staff, and all the updates, daily prompts, community pools, etc. They are only stopping the posts. Plus, they do own this website.

Well i am on WordPress Community pool from November, and this decision of yours is very hard.I understand you are probably tired of all of us, but you invested too much in this why breaking it down when you don’t have to ? I mean you can split subjects over here into categories: Short stories,Poems,Ordinary blogs and so on.If you have too much work find a way to make it easier.Don’t destroy the project you can lose a lot.Think twice before you cut the rope.

    It sounds like you’ve done your work for us. I think you and your staff have done well. We should be able to be creative about writing posts and posting photographs. It feels like it’s time, to me, too.
    I’ve been here a long time – October 2012 – so I can understand the changes. Change is good. It helps us to look at where we are and where we need to be going.
    Your the Blog Parents sending your children out to find the proper path for our journey.
    DARN – though, I wish I would been “Freshly Pressed” or some other perk so I could add that badge to my sidebar.
    Aahhhh … perhaps you’ll come up with something that may include a badge for my sidebar and, then, I won’t have to wonder if I’ve done a good job.
