To the Daily Post Community: Thank You!

Saying goodbye is hard. Celebrating years of community and great blogging is anything but.

Almost seven and a half years ago The Daily Post opened its virtual doors to the WordPress.com blogging community. It’s been an incredible ride, and incredible rides, too, sometimes come to an end. As of the end of this month (and 2,000 Daily Prompts, 380 Photo Challenges, 260 Community Pools, and 100 First Fridays later), we will no longer publish new posts, prompts, or challenges on this site.

Where are we going?

The decision no longer to publish on The Daily Post wasn’t an easy one. We’re enormously proud of what we put out here — and of the hundreds of thousands of stories, essays, photos, and poems members of this community have shared with us over the years. The team behind The Daily Post isn’t going anywhere; we’ll be focusing our attention on other projects that help WordPress.com remain the best place on the web to publish, build an audience, and find a community. We hope to cross paths with many of you on other sites we run, including Longreads and Discover.

Will this site stay online?

Yes. The Daily Post will be around for as long as our servers keep chugging along, which we predict to be roughly 14,320,078 years (give or take). All your conversations, pingbacks, and favorite writing prompts and Blogging U. courses will still be available, and we hope you’ll keep exploring — and enjoying — our deep archive of resources, from beginners’ tips to writing advice to blogging etiquette.

Where can Daily Post bloggers connect with each other and find inspiration?

One thing we know many of you will miss is, well, you. This is a place where many bloggers — including many who were just starting out — found like-minded people to be part of their blogging adventure. We hope you continue to develop friendships and seek out the advice and support of others in the WordPress.com community. Here are some resources to explore:

What happens between now and May 31?

We’ll publish the last First Friday thread this week, as well as a Community Pool post and a Photo Challenge next week. (Daily Prompts will continue through May 31.) We hope you decide to participate in these final posts, and also encourage you to use their respective comment sections to make plans for keeping in touch with all your Daily Post friends.

One last note…

Our mission has always been to inspire others to blog more and to blog better, even if “blogging better” means something quite different in 2018 than it did back in 2010. The editors and contributors who’ve tended to this site have all changed, grown, and evolved, and so have the members of this community. What has stayed consistent — almost miraculously so — is the spirit of openness, respect, and camaraderie of the people who’ve made this place a part of their online journey. Yes, that’s you.

From those of us on the WordPress.com team who’ve contributed to The Daily Post over the years, thank you for being the best blogging community on the web, bar none. It’s been a total joy.

  1. This is so sad, almost like a kick in the gut. The daily prompts have given me such inspiration. The Daily Post was an excellent resource when I started my blog nearly a year ago, It is still where I find new readers and creators. You will be sorely missed. Thank you for the awesome community over time. I doubt you will ever be duplicated.

  2. I don’t see anyone asking why they are stopping The Daily Post, has there been an explanation as to why it should stop? If I were in any way competent with computer wizzkiddery I would organise a petition, or at the very least, sign one if someone else came up with the idea. Am I correct in assuming there will no longer be the Daily Prompt and if so how on earth will I think of something to write about. To quote the Marx Brothers, “this is an outrage, this means war.” They can’t do this to me, I’m not a young man, I’m mature and set in my ways, I can’t do with things changing will-nilly, without so much as a by your leave. I shall be lost for words, as you can clearly see. Have they given proper thought to this, I don’t want this to be the end of my marriage, but I fear if I don’t have The Daily Post to moan on I will inadvertently turn my attentions to my long suffering wife. If I am forced to moan to my wife there can only be two outcomes, an acrimonious divorce or I shall wake up one morning to find I have been stabbed to death in my sleep. I therefore say to those in charge of this foolish decision, please reconsider, for the sake of my marriage and my health.

    1. Well said! I have no wife but killing the SOUL of WP without even consulting us is outrageous, wrong and should be stopped .. I whole heartedly agree and note that Ben is avoiding answering these comments?!?

  3. How sad!!! 😥 😥 I really enjoyed the community pool and have found so many new friends and got a lot of inspiration to photography through the WPC. I’ll surely miss you all, you have done a great job !!!! Love from Malta 💗

    I just don’t understand why that has to go away… 😒

    1. It shouldn’t … we need to say NO to this travesty! It is killing the SOUL of WP and we haven’t been consulted or given a feasible excuse … protest now before it dies, please?

      1. I don’t think there’s any way to stop that train at this point.
        I already came up with a Daily Prompt replacement…it won’t be the same…but it’ll have to do…

  5. A very big thank you for all the effort you have put into the Daily Post over all these years. I have especially enjoyed the Weekly Photo Challenge and supported it as often as I could. I am very grateful for all that you and the team have done and am glad that the archives will stay as I am still catching up on all the contributions. You will be missed and I wish you and the whole team all the best for the future 🙂

  6. I will miss the community pool, but I wonder how much of their decision was the result of GDPR. I hope WordPress itself doesn’t shutter.

  8. I just found this place for interaction and I was looking forward to Community Pool. I like the fact that the classes will still be available because I need. I never thought that it would it end, but I understand. I will miss it horribly.

  10. This is such sad news.. It’s an ache in my heart. I love the sense of community here, and though the community isn’t going anywhere, it will be so much more effort to find them again. If it makes any difference at all.. Please don’t go! 😭🙈

  11. I’m sorry to hear this! I have thoroughly enjoyed your daily prompts and will sorely miss them. I wish you luck in your new endeavors. Maybe one day you’ll decide to bring back the prompts. I’ll be waiting 😉 Thank you for all the wonderful things you’ve offered the WP community!

  12. Out of all the sites to close this one seems the least reasoned… The Community Pool was a great place to connect, see other blogs, and be seen by other bloggers. Where can we go to do that now? I would like to see something decent to replace community pool at least, so everyone has somewhere where they can dive in and float around… :/

  14. I am really going to miss the daily post. It has been a constant source of inspiration and a great way to find bloggers with similar intesests. Thank you for all the inspiration. I also know that some of my followers have come via the daily post too, so thank you for that too. WIshing you all well in what ever you do next.

  16. Sad news😢 the Daily post / prompts and Weekly photo challenge inspired me a lot. First Friday and Community pool is where I found a lot of my followers (or they me 😉) had been absent from blogging for a while .. but was planning to start again with the prompts and picture challenges 😭

  18. To quote one of my recent posts “Not happy…” My question is “Why?” The Daily Prompt is a catalyst for many of my posts over the recent months and has increased both followers and likes. It has also increased my appreciation of other bloggers. I don’t post every Prompt but it does give me much needed inspiration. It will be sadly missed.

  19. So sad that this is ending. I have been a part of the WP Weekly photo challenge and even was fortunate enough to curate one, since it began. I have absolutely loved the community I have grown thanks to the Daily Post. I am so sad it is going as we need these connections more than ever before. Thanks for all the work you have done.

  22. I will miss the Community Pool! Sad to see it go. I gained many new followers using this and was able to follow some incredible bloggers. Other blogging network groups don’t have the same ethos of mutual reading and support.

  23. The photo challenges have been such a joy. I finally got back to blogging after years of care giving to two grandchildren (which kicked my butt and left no energy for blogging) and then my husband got cancer and we spent a year fighting for his life. He wasn’t expected to live more than six months, but he went into remission, so I jumped back into blogging full steam, and the WordPress community has been such an inspiration.

    I will miss The Daily Post prompts and photo challenges. I’m so glad the Discover posts will continue, and I look forward to those.

    Thank you, WP team, for all the hard work. It’s been a pleasure to be part of some of these prompts and challenges, and it will be fun to go back through the archives.

  24. I will greatly miss looking for the new photo and one word prompts in my emails. Door shut and new doors open. I was blessed last week to be able to write for another daily blog and have begun, but will always miss my first place here

  29. So sad to hear this. My blog is relatively new, and since the last three months I would attempt to write on the daily prompt and share a photograph for the weekly challenge whenever I could. It was a fun way to write something different and connect with many readers. Thanks for the fond memories, and all the best for the journey ahead.
