First Friday

Brand new blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

  1. Hey guys, i am actually a new blogger…i know it said within the last month… but listen…i made my very first post one year ago and it has seen no traffic at all. I didn’t have a cool thread such as this one to get people to see what i have written. I want to write more but would love feedback on my style of writing and just general things you all would like to read about! Looking forward to hearing from you all!!

  2. Warm greetings to all my fellow bloggers and visitors. Just a few weeks ago I was a new blogger (still relatively new and learning to navigate my way around). I know how it feels to publish your first piece that you’ve worked on diligently. I’m here to offer support everyone regardless of the content of your blog. Post your links below and I’ll be sure to check out your work!

Happy Last First Friday of the month. Did I say that right? Be bloggertastic!

    1. Everyone can use tags, and I see you have one post that has a few tags — is the problem that you’re not sure where to add tags, or that something goes wrong when you try to add them?

      1. I am not sure I can with my current theme, I’ve looked at some How-tos and YT videos and where tagging should be in the back end just isn’t there for me. I’ve switched themes a lot before settling on this. Which post of mine has tags? I made Portland Gotta Portland before I was settled on my current theme.

      2. The “Updates!” post has tags. Tags aren’t theme-specific — every WordPress blog uses them. Usually, when you’re writing a new post, you’d open the “Categories and Tags” tab to the right of the post editor and enter your tags there. If you don’t see that tab, please contact our awesome support folks so they can get to the bottom of things for you!

    1. Hi, and welcome!

We’re glad you’re so excited about your new blog (yay!), and that you shared your link here. We’d appreciate it if you didn’t leave multiple, identical comments linking to your blog — it’s considered a little spammy and we’ll remove the duplicates. The best way to get people to visit you is to visit them and/or leave them some meaningful feedback!

      1. So far the writing more is going well. I’m starting to feel an itch when there has been a few days without writing. It’s good. I’ve missed reacting to that feeling.

    1. Great start 🙂 You still have a text widget on the right of your page that you can amend in the customiser. Your About page is also the example page. I recommend writing an About page as other bloggers do read them to find more about you. 🙂

    1. Loved your post! You’ve used a lot of tags. Something to be aware of – WordPress spam filters kick in when you use more than 15 tags and categories combined. The spam filters will stop search engines locating your post, reducing your possible readership. I would only select the most appropriate and be careful not to duplicate. E.G. If I’m putting a post in my history category I don’t tag history.
      Hope this helps 🙂

    1. Hi, after trying about to dozen themes my site currently looks like this: https://dorkvania.com/ There are a few kinks I need to work out like menu color and text width, but outside of that how is it looking? I did a lot of work trying to figure out how to best do my gallery pages for a good user experience.

      1. Hi,

The background colour is very striking and makes your photos pop out, and the text also stands out well against it. The only problem is the link colour, is there anywhere you can change this as it is a little hard to read. The gallery pages feel to work very well.

It is a shame there is not comment section that I could find. Have you disabled this? Bloggers appreciating your work will want to let you know and the comments is a great way to do this.

I hope this was helpful. I really like your abandoned places pics, if I haven’t said before. there are some real good shots in there! Thanks for sharing 🙂

      2. Thanks for the great feedback. The link and menu colors are a problem. I need to figure out where to fiddle with that.
I want to do some audience interaction, but I do have comments off for now. I was wanting the pages to look tidy, but I’ll consider changing that.
Thanks! I am hoping to get a well-made photography site together. So far a good portion of my site traffic is internal, which is encouraging.

      3. My pleasure. I am glad I could be some help.

I have never thought the comments look untidy, especially as you don’t see them until you have scrolled to the bottom of the post. Even if you do think they are, I would consider the aesthetic inconvenience to be worthwhile for the benefits the comments provide. It is lovely to hear feedback from followers when they read your posts. Nobody has ever said anything even shading into anything nasty. It is all positive.

Saying all this, I love your perfectionism!

If you have the time and fancy, I would be very grateful if you would check out my site. Leave a like or comment if you like, and if it strikes you and you hit ‘follow’, then you will make my day!

    2. Thanks so much for supporting the newbies!

We’d really appreciate it if you could visit the links people leave on the thread generally rather than asking them to reply to you specifically — that creates lots of duplicate links, long sub-threads, and makes it harder for people to navigate here. It’s already a pretty busy place, so we work hard to keep it as easy to use as possible! Thanks 🙂

      1. That’s no problem 🙂 Thanks for letting me know. Cheers for everything you do to support this site for all us bloggers. Much appreciated 🙂

  4. Hello and welcome, new folks! We’re really excited to meet you.

As usual, I just want to remind everyone that we moderate the comments on First Friday pretty heavily — this is really a space for brand new people to introduce themselves and meet one another, and for others to welcome and support them.

If you’re not here to either share your (recent) first post or leave a supportive comment, please head to the Community Pool, which is where any blogger can seek feedback on any aspect of blogging. And if you’re not sure what the guidelines here are, please read the above post — or just ask!

    Happy blogging, y’all:)
