First Friday

Brand new blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.
  • When commenting, avoid copying and pasting the same response repeatedly. It makes it look like you’re not really paying attention. Not to mention, it’s spammy.

      1. Hi Pot Paurie, and Welcome to Word Press. I enjoyed your first post. Very wise. Your page has a great layout. I love the picture with the balloons. Goes great with the topic you’ve chosen. Good luck on your new blog. 🙂

      1. Well, then welcome.
You chose a cute theme. It looks appealing.
You might want to add an “About” page to your menu (among, Home, Contact, Blog), so that we know a bit more about you and/or what to expect from your blog.
I hope you enjoy your blogging journey!

      1. Great blog so far. You seem to have thought it out real well. It’s good that you link to your outside portfolio.
I left you a couple comments.
1 more thing – the uncertainty post lacks paragraph spacing, so you might want to add that, so it doesn’t look so chunky.

      1. Your site looks very well thought out and professional.
Are you the only “author” on this blog? The “contact “US”” has me kind of thrown. It makes it seem to me like there is more to your blog than you (couldn’t find any indication). So I would just like to see “contact”, but that;s just nitpicking.
What I think is VERY important is for you to just have excerpts on y our Home page. not the full blog post. Once you post more stuff, it will get really hard for anyone who would like to scroll to some of your older stuff.

    1. HI and welcome to WordPress! Love the idea behind your blog. I’m a total ios person and this helps me understand why more things dont use both ios and android. You did well putting things in layman’s terms. . . If i can keep up. . anyone can. Good luck on your project. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

      1. Thank you for your well written reply for the blog, it really shows you’ve read it, I would always prefer having comments like what you wrote instead of”Great post”/”Great initiative”..it really shows you have read it and understood, thank you, and if you won’t mind could you comment what you’ve written as a reply on the blog?

    1. Hi 🙂 Great start! I would suggest adding an About page to let other bloggers know more about you – they really do read those pages. I would also recommend shorter paragraphs as reading on electronic devices is better suited to a small paragraph so readers aren’t faced with a wall of words.
      Hope this helps 🙂

    2. Hi and welcome to WordPress. I love that you started the blog to practice your writing. What better way to practice than to write more! I chuckled when you stated “It means being at peas with myself. My whole-ass self. From spectacular to sucky.” So many people beat themselves up and make them selves miserable over parts of themselves they don’t like. They forget that they have very unique talents and strengths, and if they accept flaws, but focus more on strengths they’d be so much happier. Good luck on your blog and in your studies!

      1. Your writing is very articulate and eloquent. I am excited to read more about your mother’s journal through your words.

You may benefit from adding a comment button so bloggers can interact with you.:)

  3. Technically not the first post but still a month old newbie to this blogging word. This whole blogging concept has bought some remarkable changes in my perspective towards life and feel reconnected with the inner me whom I had almost lost in the daily struggle of survival. Thanks to blogging, I am connected to him again 🙂

Here is the link to my post; please read whenever you get time –

    The Black Day!!

    Thanks

    1. Niraj! It was a Black Day indeed. I empathized with the young boy in your post. Maybe not the death of a parent, but we’ve all experienced that feeling when you’re let down after looking forward to something and not understanding why. I definitely agree that blogging connects us with self.

I just have a minor suggestion: the subject of your post is a little boy but there were times where you referred to him as “her” so I would just make sure your noun/pronouns match.

      Keep writing!!!

      1. Hi, I am glad that you read the post and found it connecting. Yes, I just observed there were those his/her mistakes. Sometimes emotions suppress the grammar and I end up doing this silly stuff. Thank you very much for pointing.

    2. Wow. Impressive writing! Welcome to WordPress. I read the Black Day. . . It was well written and captured the confusion and fear from a child’s perspective. So often, we don’t think about things from anyone’s perspective but our own. Of course a child seeing this would have a different perspective than the adults. Very powerful! Great start on your blog. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

      1. Thank you. I could write that story because I had faced the similiar situation. I intend to write more as I see my emotions well expressed when put in words. Thank you again !

    1. Hi and Welcome to WordPress. I love your site. I’m a bit envious actually because you capture thoughts and convey them in a very clear, short and concise way. LOL it would take me 800 words to get the message across that you do in just a small paragraph. I love that your message is short and simple. Followed. Good luck! I’ll be looking forward to new posts!

    1. I think it’s amazing that you’re preserving your mother’s memories through her journal entries in your blog! I’ve read a couple and I feel like I’m right there experiencing the same things your mother had experienced! I can’t wait to continue reading these posts! 🙂

    2. Hi great start! What a lovely idea! I have my mother’s letters that she sent to my grandmother holidaying in Australia in 1975 and I would like to do something with them in the future. Liked and followed 🙂

    3. Hey Karen! This is really great- must be wonderful to be able to relive your mother’s memories! Thanks for sharing it with us!

      1. I feel for you. Her journals allow me and my family and friends who knew her to experience her once again. For my own children and those of my brothers and sister, it allows them to get to know the grandma they never met. I know they would have loved her.

    4. Wow! This is moving, as someone who loves to express myself in different forms—I feel you are really honoring your mother and her memories in the most loving and best way. I just followed you! Would love to see more!

      1. Hi there, thanks so much for this feedback as I had the WordPress follow button at the bottom of the sidebar only on the Home page. Have fixed this so it is on the side just under the email follow button on both the Home and Journal pages. Hopefully this is a better spot for it.

      2. Thank you, the britchy one! I have one buried in there somewhere. I’ll look at and make it accessible. With no email requirement.

      1. That link works. As it happens, I have some ideas that don’t fit the niche of my own blog. These would be fictional book reviews and maybe some flash fiction. I will see whether I have anything worth contributing but it might be a big decision for me to commit to writing on a regular basis.

  4. Hi everyone. Feel free to check out my blog if you have a free moment. I’ve started an online journal here, which I’ve carried over from doing for the past 7 years on tumblr. Nothing too exciting yet, but I’ll be posting on here as much as I can!

Look forward to hearing back from some people in the community here. :]

    1. Hi, I took a look and you’ve made a great start! I’m wondering about your theme as you’ve what looks like a page of paper on the orange and blue background. I did find it a tad confusing as I couldn’t locate a Home page and wasn’t sure if I’d arrived on it or not. Also with your widgets set up below as a footer, your page is empty except for the blog post – was that intentional? If your theme allows you could use a side bar for categories, archives etc. so they are easily located by the reader.
      Hope this helps 🙂

      1. Hi Ruth. Thanks for the feedback. I’m a techno phobe and pretty much didn’t understand a thing you just said 🙂 I’ll go look for some tutorials on how to do exactly what you just mentioned.

    1. Great post! Thankfully I never had to face that with my two 🙂
Might I suggest a background colour change? The acid yellow is a bit harsh and a softer hue would be easier on the eyes.

      1. Feedback taken 🙂 i was planning to change it over the weekend.. will consider a softer hue. If you have any colour suggestions, feel free to let me know 🙂

    2. Since this is first friday, I thought I would offer a suggestion…first off, I think the topic of the post is great..and your post is interesting …I found myself curious about things like what percentage of kids struggle with this…maybe adding in details such as that would be helpful to a curious reader.. good luck!

      1. Thankyou for the suggestion.. I am actually unsure what percentage of people might be facing this issue but can see how I can get around this.. Thanks a ton for the appreciation 🙂 Very motivating..

      2. Thanks so much Jack Bratley. I will add an about me and contact page this evening. I was just using the menu widget, but it automatically uses the uncategorized page and you are correct, it looks messy. I have fixed that, I think. I hope I have. 😂 I am trying to figure it all out while still writing posts so, it’s a work in progress ☺ Thanks again for the feedback.

    1. Hi, I loved your post! It sounds a wonderful place to live! You don’t have an About page and you can add that in the customiser. Top tip: your first post can often make a great About page! I do follow another homestead blogger. 🙂

      1. I definitely need to look at my blog on a computer. I thought my home page was a sort of about me, but I have no clue what it looks like aside from on my phone. Thank you for your suggestion. I will have to move that info to a separate page and perhaps pin that first post there as well. I have no idea what I am doing😂

      2. I finally got a chance to look at it on my computer and it looks completely different. I will definitely be adding an about me page. Thank you so much for the feedback. It really is helpful to have others take a peek and tell me what doesn’t look right or what’s missing. Thanks again.

  5. Good morning!
I’m so excited to read through these new blogs!

I’ve just moved away from London to a lovely new house in the countryside, and I’m in the (daunting) process of setting up my own business.
I’ll be writing about home, garden, self-employment, family-starting and wedding planning.
I’d love to see you there!

    Settling In…

    1. I loved your post, I REALLY want to read more but I couldn’t see like or follow buttons at the end of your posts. Those are pretty much essential. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to like, comment and follow you. If I have to give my email to follow or leave a comment, well, I’ll be honest, I don’t. This page will help:

    2. You are living my dream!
We plan to move from London to a rural/semi rural place in Scotland – but for us it’s a long process – too lazy to push ourselves to tart the house up! So there’s lots of talking about and a lot less doing. But we’re getting there very slowly. Looking forward to seeing more of your posts! 🙂
