First Friday

Brand new blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.
  • When commenting, avoid copying and pasting the same response repeatedly. It makes it look like you’re not really paying attention. Not to mention, it’s spammy.

      1. That was interesting, the only suggestion I’d make is to move your “about” page to a separate link instead of just under home. You want to make it as easy as possible for others to find out about you and whet their interest to follow 😊

      2. I’m with Britchy on the Home/ About issue. I understand why someone told you to put the About on the Home, but if I was to do so, I’d delete the word “About” from the post. Otherwise it’s kind of confusing.

The problem that I’ve been seeing with “About” posts on the “Home” page is that it’s much harder to navigate and find the actual posts. Especially if someone wants to scroll through your posts before deciding on reading one (that’s what I find “Home” pages to be for. Just food for thought. You decide what’s best for you.

      2. I would definitely add an “about” page – you could turn your first post into that if you wanted because in time they will sink. People like finding out a little about you and your blog so it’s a very helpful way to sell your blog to new followers 😊

    1. TGIFF (Thank God It’s First Friday). I recently started blogging and published my first post a week ago. My first post features a flash fiction piece and my blog will subsequently feature more work like this in addition to narrative poems. Let me know your thoughts in the comments on my blog post, thanks.

Here is the link to my first post. Enjoy!

      1. I understand Arya. I’m in the same place, except I’m already working. I told my mum I need at least five years to become financially stable and only then will I marry. Grandma blackmailing is normal. Don’t fall for it, you do what you need to.

      2. I would suggest an about page. Tell us a little about you, why you’re blogging and what your blog will be about. It’s a taster, a teaser to get people to look deeper. Have a look at others about me pages and find what works for you but bear in mind, it’s the first thing a lot of people look for so make it work 😊

    1. Great post! How tough for you all to face all your challenges. I followed, I like family and health blogs. On the blog side, allowing comments on articles is a good thing as it allows other bloggers to engage with you beyond First Friday and Community Pool (Mondays although it is open for a couple more days), you may wish to add an About page, other bloggers do read about a blogger before following. FYI a first post often makes a great About page! The odd picture does help break up the text on an electronic device – it can be as generic as a much needed cup of tea (or something stronger) or a bunch of flowers – obviously if it is related to your post, even better!

    2. Really great post! It was so well written, and I felt really happy when I heard all the advances your son had made. It’ll be tough, but with such caring and thoughtful parents I’m sure your son can and will lead a great life.

    3. You’re strong! Just the fact that you continue to fight and strive for a better life for your child shows how good you are as a person! I’m so happy I got to read your story, it was inspiring! 🙂

    1. When arriving at your home page I noticed you haven’t named your site yet. I don’t know if that’s out of choice or not, but it currently just says ‘Site Title’. Would be great to be engaged into your blog with a catchy name 🙂
