Community Pool

Where WordPress bloggers support each other with feedback and advice.

Happy new year! Welcome to the first 2018 edition of the Community Pool. Let’s keep this forum a welcoming, friendly, and productive space — thank you for reading (or re-reading) and respecting our guidelines below. Here’s to another fantastic year of blogging and online camaraderie.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Are you redesigning your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

The Community Pool is for peer feedback and advice. Looking for more specific information? Check out some of these resources:

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

Looking for more information about custom domains, advanced design options, and other enhancements for your blog? Find the WordPress.com plan that’s right for you.

Are you a new blogger looking to share your very first post? We have a special forum for bloggers just like you in our weekly First Friday posts.

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips and guidelines you might find useful:

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once, as well as for not starting numerous threads in a single Pool.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother. Also note that including multiple links in your comment might automatically put it in the moderation queue, which will delay its publication.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. Great post! I enjoyed reading it. It is quite long – and that is not a criticism as it is something I am trying to curb with my writing (and usually fail miserably) but you may like to think about making two posts out of one next time. It’s a win win for us as it means you get 2 posts written for your blog! E.g. the first part about your family and academic expectations could be one post and the friendship part could have been the other. You also need to fill out your About page as bloggers do look at to take a look at who the author is. 🙂

    1. Hi Melanie. I love the format of your blog.

I don’t know how you kept the blog posts on your main page as brief as possible with the link continue reading because on my blog, all my blogs comes up in full. Do you know how to make the blogs on my page to be as short as possible with the element of Continue Reading?

All of your website is lovely and spaced out with all the various headings on the top.

      Terrific job

      1. Thank you for checking it out! I will be sure to poke around yours 🙂 as far as the excerpts, if you go to theme customization and click on content options, the first thing listed will give you the option of full posts or excerpts:)

    2. I also commented on your blog, Melanie!:

Really lovely. I’m following! I lost my mom to cancer when I was 30 (and my little sister was 23). I find it a challenge to go through marriage and parenthood without that model to look up to. I rely on a lot of memories, as you do, I’m sure. Maybe you’d like to read a post I wrote recently that touches on a memoir about a couple that buys a fixer-upper–might hit home for you! https://rustbeltgirlblog.wordpress.com/2017/12/24/all-the-way-home-and-the-back-and-heart-breaking-art-of-the-diy/

      1. I completely agree! It is definitely challenging, but she lives on in my memories. I often ask myself when in doubt- what would my mom do? I will be sure to check out your post! 🙂

  2. Hello everyone ,

I have been blogging for two years about getting Mba, self -help and things i would love to do . I was inspired by a book named MBA in a day while i have been doing my MBA . I am aiming to share my experiences and knowledge though out this challenging journey and help anyone who plan to do their master and/or cannot afford this kind of programme due to its unaffordable prices . I think that there are so many things we could do by ourselves and encourage each other in this awesome journey to us. 😊

Wishing you all a fruitful and joyful year ,
Do keep blogging beautiful people from all around the world ❤🎈🎉🎄

    With my warmest regards,

    1. Liked the post. I think much of it applies well beyond ourselves (the future, the dreams, the stress). Maybe what’s different about us is that we’ve seen others have amazing lives and now find it harder to just grind without feeling like a loser all the time..

    1. Hi, great start! You have all your posts as uncategorised and as your site grows you will find it easier to have categories (sidebar or footer depending on theme) to sort your posts and help readers find the topic. You can have a combined 15 categories and tags and these help other readers locate your posts when searching. If you are not sure how to use categories take a look at my site. Hope this helps 🙂

  3. Happy New Year everyone! This is such a cool idea. I would love some support over at my blog if you’re looking to read some positive and uplifting “brighter side” posts and also getting introduced to some neat products on Amazon I have purchased that I think are pretty neat and underrated so I’m looking to spread the word about them.

  7. To wade across life’s streams is something we often do, but always in different paces. Time comes when we have to move on, sometimes not prepared to pack our own, but only abide by nature’s commands- never sure of what’s in store but prepared to make sacrifices and take surprises however unpleasant. We all wade across life’s streams, not ever sure of our return, but hoping to meet somewhere in life’s maze while searching. . . searching for an outlet, trying to find a way, away.

    1. Great post! I think I heard today that it is the 200th anniversary of Frankenstein? Or maybe it’s Mary Shelley’s birth? Whatever, the UK Royal Mint will issue a commemorative coin . . .or was it the Royal Mail and it’s a set of stamps? Haha. I’m not very helpful am I? 🙂

    2. Wow. Quite a variety. I will be reading the Camus book and The Motor Cycle Diaries this year. Keep it up. Reading is becoming a lost art. I wonder what would be the future of novelists…..
