To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips and guidelines you might find useful:

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once, as well as for not starting numerous threads in a single Pool.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother. Also note that including multiple links in your comment might automatically put it in the moderation queue, which will delay its publication.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  2. Hey Everyone,

    I am having a hard time finding the audience for my blog. What I mean by that is I when I create a post I will often promote it through social media and have noticed that the people who read my posts are typically the people who already know how to do the things I am explaining in my Adobe Illustrator tutorials. My question is when you post a new blog post how do you get the word out to people you think would like the post?

    1. Hey Kelcie!
      For starters, I absolutely love the layout of your blog! It’s so simplistic yet aesthetically appealing, and looks very very easy to use.
      I don’t really have any solutions for you, as my content is a lot more generic and probably appeals to a wider audience, and I still have problems getting it out there. This is a good place to start, though, and I’m sure others will give you more suggestions! The only other thing I can think of is joining facebook or pinterest forums, as I’ve heard people suggest that before.

    2. Hello, your blog looks nice. Have you tried Twitter, using hashtags for Adobe etc.?

      There’s massive competition out there with so many millions of blogs. In my experience (flash fiction) you just have to keep plugging away, and over time your audience grows. CP is a great place to start!

      Also, are there any mags, online or off, you can contribute to, to get your name out there?

      1. I have a twitter but I am really bad about using it. I mostly post on Instagram but I will have to try posting more consistently on twitter. Thanks for the advice.

    3. Hi Kelcie, I totally relate and I think what it comes down to is a slow, organic growth of loyal followers. A fleeting audience might spike views of your blog, but having that return fare is far more essential to longevity. Community Pool is a great place to start and social media and networking platforms like LinkedIn, even, can be helpful in building a portfolio and sharing it with an audience seeking the kind of professional development and expertise you have to offer!

    4. I’m just starting out, but I’ve found posting on a set schedule has helped. I also started out doing only a few types of posts and then branched out. Maybe you could write about industry trends in addition to tutorials?

    8. Your thoughts are so relatable 😊 Like someone said, there’s lots of competition out there. I’ve been enjoying a steadily growing audience (of lovely bloggers I’ve befriended via comments) but mist of my traffic STILL comes from WP reader! Sometimes it feels frustrating but you’ve got to just look at the bright side and enjoy what you’re doing and love your own blog 💕 Happy blogging everyone!

      1. That is very true. I had a blog before that felt like a chore but this blog is more of a passion project. Hopefully my audience will slowly improve but at this rate I am going to be 80 before I see that happen.

    9. You’re blog looks awesome and while I don’t have any “definitely going to win you lots of followers” advice, I think utilizing Instagram could be beneficial. Creating designs and posting them is definitely aesthetically pleasing to a lot of people, and using tags and even participating in monthly design challenges could gain you a community of followers on there. I tried to see if you already had an instagram, though your social media link at the bottom of your page took me to your twitter so I wasn’t sure. Whatever you do, best of luck, it seems like you’re great at it!

      1. I’m new to this too. I feel like ever time I post on community pool someone tells me that I don’t have a follow button. How do you get a follow button? I know you can enter your email to follow but I will have to look into that.

      2. In your dashboard, there is an option of “Themes” within which there is also an option to “Customize”. Click on it. Now while customizing, there is an option of “Widgets” where you can find the said Follow button. Once you set it up it’ll display in your homepage. I hope this helps.

    12. Hi Kelcie,
      Well done on your blog. Easy to navigate and read. Unfortunately it is very hard to get noticed and find an audience for any blog. It takes a lot of work.
      I would liken the work involved to looking for a job and the networking involved. A lot of my blog traffic has come from reading and following and commenting on others blogs. Most weeks I will comment on at least 30 different blogs. Sometimes it brings an audience, sometimes not.
      I have business type cards of my blog I hand out if there becomes an opportunity. Although this rarely gets new followers, it does bring in new viewings.
      I am a ultrarunner, which has given me the opportunity to speak in front of audiences. Often I don’t charge anything. This also gives the opportunity to promote the blog. A couple of weeks ago it was for a women’s institute. (the material on your blog would be well suited for a women’s institute). In my area the women’s institute is always looking for speakers.
      Definitely a lot of work and networking. For me once I got that base of followers, I have been very happy with the growth. Hope this helps! 🙂

      2. Thanks! I know nothing so I’ll surely take you up in that. I need something basic, but my blog is basically about balancing work and playing outdoors (mountain biking, skiing, hiking). I need something simile like maybe a briefcase and and a helmet or something. I’all hopefully have some time next week to play around with ideas.

    14. Hi Kelcie like the other commenters I have no quick fix solution. Some of us are in the same boat. Just don’t give up. Keep blogging. I have 18 followers but when I read my stats the number of people seeing the blog are much more. I read a lot of blogs especially on here on Monday but I don’t necessarily follow them.

I’m not sure I have any new advice, just make sure you’ve got the right tags with things like ‘adobe tutorials’, keep sharing on social media – definitely Facebook it on surface Pattern Design community groups, and have a regular posting schedule. 🙂

Hey, I liked your post 🙂 I too have moved house (and city and country) a number of times, although not nearly as many as you have, and I must say that I’ve always loved it, apart from the leaving friends behind bit of course. Although I’ve always been younger and moving with my family (the last time when I was 18) so I can rely on my parents to figure out the nitty-gritties, while I just pack my stuff and move xD

      1. Ah, it is quite nice getting to explore a new surrounding right? I remember when I was packing up to move to NYC, I was excited and scared out of my mind! Unfortunately, I had to deal with the nitty gritty of the moving.

    2. Big moves are an opportunity to purge and purge ruthlessly anything that is a) non essential or b) not of real significance or sentiment. It’s amazing how quickly you can pare things down based on this criteria. For the things you simply aren’t certain you can part with…find a friend or family member with space to spare in their basement or crawl space. 😉 I wish I could say that I’m kidding but my sister legitimately has some of my “too big to fit” items currently furnishing her basement…

    3. Hi, I can’t believe how many times you’ve moved. And I think I read you’re only 25! Well, I’m (ahem) quite a bit older and have only moved a few times, yet have a large storage unit stacked to the ceiling!

      At the end of the day you have to take stuff with you, store it, or sell it/give it away. I’d store it myself, if I could afford to!

      Wishing you the best of luck with your latest adventure! Also, have you thought about publishing a guide to moving abroad. I’m sure a lot of people would value your experience. It’s much easier to publish a paperback and/or eBook than most people realise. I wrote a post on it not long ago.

    I am a big fan of reading- reading novels, reading novellas, reading short stories, and reading blogs! I just feel that reading takes you to world you’ve never been, to place that you’ve never seen. It lets you see beyond what is present around you. Isn’t it? Are you an enthusiastic reader, too?

    I have a creative writing blog where I write short stories which I have written for a creative writing course I’m currently taking. I will also in the future be adding new content such as posts about the craft of writing and book reviews. I also do lots of arts and crafts with my kids so I’m sure some of that will feature to.     I’d like to share this post with you all – it’s about how I felt running three ultra-marathons in the West Highlands of Scotland. The races were 42 miles (68 km), 53 miles (85 km), and 95 miles (153 km) long. I’ve described each race, but I’ve also discussed what it meant to me physically and emotionally to run that far.

Marathon running is an incredible feat, of physical and mental resilience (particularly to someone like me who struggles to even jog 10 km, at a leisurely pace). Your account of each race is even more engaging because it’s in a setting unfamiliar to me as I’ve never traveled to Scotland before! It really is, and in fact with this last one I got a lot of very passionate defenders of our city telling me I shouldn’t have mentioned the name of just one city at all – although I stand by it, because I don’t think it’s right to point fingers elsewhere when I experience it all in one place regularly.
        But still, it’s a lot scarier when people you know are finding fault with your writing on a personal account :p

      1. I’m so glad you enjoyed and related to the post, Elzie! Initially, I wrote it with a far more serious tone, but as it progressed, it naturally evolved into a light-hearted and comedic perspective on sisterhood. I think that must be an indication that sometimes it’s just better to laugh and let things go. Otherwise, I think my sisters would drive me mad, in a far less funny way.

    1. Keep posting, and interact with the blog world. Seek out others and follow them. It can be a very slow journey but I think if you stick with it the following will grow.

      1. This is so true. Slow, organic growth with a solid, steadfast readership base takes time to build, but is totally worth it.

        Once the initial foundation is laid, the pace can quicken and blogs often gain momentum in acquiring more followers.

  28. Am I doing too much?

    Aside from the ongoing story of Kabize Vipertree, I’m posting my first wife’s poetry (she passed in 2001. Some of poems were published, but most of her work has only been available to her immediate family and friends.) And I’m posting my own poetry written many years ago.

    It doesn’t leave much time for other stuff, right? Fortunately, the poetry only involves typing and proofreading, and I can stay ahead of the game.

    Of course, pre-typing in MS Word then copy-paste into the blog interface has issues. The formats don’t exactly match up and it requires a bit of editing. Is there any trick in the blog interface to disable the wide paragraph break?
