First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    2. Hello and welcome to the blog world, where you are off to a great start. I love the name of the site itself. Damsel with a Drill is catchy and instantly lets us know what most of this blog will be about. Your menu set up is great, I’ve got to figure out how to make mine work like yours. Congratulations on the purchase of your home, I cant wait to see what you turn those rooms into especially the pink bathroom. Also, i have to say, I loved what you did to remember your wedding guests-So much better than the traditional guest book.

      1. Thank you so much Sylvia! Your words are very encouraging. I have spent the last month reading all sorts of articles on how to set things up, it has certainly been a learning process. I am glad you liked the guest book, I am working on getting some better pictures of it! Keep an eye out for future projects 🙂

      1. Of course! I started by making a list of words associated with my theme of home improvement. So I made a list of tools and other associated words. And I wanted to add a feminine word that would be create some balance with the manliness of home improvement! So I would start with a list of words associated with your theme and then pull out the thesaurus!

One little thing: have you enabled your like button? I didn’t see it when I checked out your introduction page.

    1. Good Morning and Welcome! I went to your first post, a review of the Estee Lauder foundation, and found it quite helpful because I never know which foundation to get, or how to match it and so I end up spending a lot doing trial and error. The pro’s and con’s list was great for people who want to get straight to that. I Look forward to reading more reviews.

One suggestion is to put a menu near the top of your site so visitors can get to the topics they want information on quickly. Some of your posts are advice/motivational like “It’s okay to Fail” and others are make up reviews,
Some readers may want to get straight to make up advice and need to find that info quickly.

Good luck, you are off to a great start.

      2. forgot to mention. . .Be careful taking pictures from the internet for your posts. There are lots of advice columns on how to do this safely, but I’ve also read a few blog posts where this has caused bloggers a few legal headaches. Consider finding stock photo sites, taking your own pictures, or attempting to illustrate your photos. This is advice I received early on and i’m grateful for it, i hope you find it helpful as well

    2. Hey nice blog there… looks great and already lot of post.. just one suggestion, try to add “read more” tags to your posts, so that your home page shows little content on each of your posts and it looks tidy in my opinion.. Hope this helps… keep posting and have a good luck!

    1. Good Morning and Welcome! I read both of your posts and wow they were deep. You’ve got a great style of writing and story telling. I was worried that with love, your worst nightmare was going to just share a very bad thing that happened, and while I hate that you had that experience, i love that you found purpose and drive in that experience and used it to help others.
One suggestion is to remember to set up your about page. Otherwise, keep writing, your posts deep and meaningful.

    2. Hey…checked your blog, nice start! …but you need to do little bit of the theme customization. Check those social icons, they can be pointed to your social sites or be deleted if you don’t want. About page also needs editing.. Please take care of them. Good luck.

      1. Hi there! We really appreciate your enthusiasm, though we can’t help but notice you leaving many short comments with an invitation to visit your blog. We call this a bait-and-switch and we delete the links.

Here’s a great post that shares some information on commenting etiquette. The best way to attract more visitors and followers is to offer more substantive comments on others’ work. Everyone is naturally curious about the person who took the time to share a thoughtful comment or pose an interesting, well considered question.

    1. Hi there, and welcome. I left a rather lengthy comment on your page. . . and while usually I don’t start feedback off with suggestions, but i’m breaking the mold to suggest you find a different way to explain what your blog is about. Saying that its a new way to channel the negatives in your life doesn’t do it justice.

It seemed to me to be a place where you are sorting out your thoughts and motivating yourself. Consider the suggestion. It seems to represent what you’ve posted so far.

Otherwise, your blog has a great look to it, your posts are short, I especially liked note to self, and this too shall pass.

  2. Hello fellow blog mates!!! I enjoy writing more than interacting with others, and topics I choose often goes un-noticed. So, I think it’s a perfect platform for the propoganda of my blog. I also like poetry but not as much as I love abstracts with abrupt starts and abrupt endings.

    1. Hi! 😃 Your writing is poignant, thought provoking, and deep. I love writings (stories, poems, short stories, flash fictions) that require me to stop and think and even reread. I had to take a step back and read yours again. I quite enjoyed having the opportunity!

also, the layout of your blog is unique; at first I’ll admit I wasn’t sure if I liked the striped background but I actually believe it works incredibly well for you. For one, its unique (at least I personally haven’t seen any) and it’s still soothing/simple in a way that’s catered to you. I like it. 🙂 Would mind if I left a quick couple suggestions? Feel free to take them in stride. Have you considered using a menu tool? I’ve only recently started using one as my posts accumulate to allow my readers and new viewers and easier go of navigation. If not a menu button, perhaps an archives button? One last thing, have you thought about enabling the option to see only an excerpt of individual posts? It’ll help with space. These are only suggestions; don’t feel as if they need to happen. Your blog’s awesome the way it is!

Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best on this new journey. Cheers! 💫

    3. Also — We’re glad you’re so excited about your new blog (yay!), and that you shared your link here. We’d appreciate it if you didn’t leave multiple, identical comments/posts asking people to your blog — it’s considered a little spammy and we’ll remove the duplicates. The best way to get people to visit you is to visit them and/or leave them some meaningful feedback.

    1. I like your “boring gift” post, it made me smile😊 but i absolutely love your feminist posts! Your so right about the handmaids tale! According to an interview with Margaret Atwood nothing in the handmids tale hasn’t already happened somewhere in the world! If this isn’t a scary thought then i don’t know what Is as is shows just how close humanity really is to the events that take place in her dystopian world! Keep up the good work!
