First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Welcome, Janet. I enjoyed the post that you shared. It was informative. The only thing I noticed right off hand was that you have a side widget you haven’t utilized yet. Maybe start creating categories for your posts and then use that widget for categories. You can do this just by clicking on your customize tab. Good luck! 🙂

    2. I like the general theme you have going on for you blog. I am a sucker for learning new things on how to make life easier! I look forward to reading more from you! I too noticed the unused widget on the sidebar. Easy fix which I am sure you are already on. Happy Friday!

  1. I don’t know if I’m considered a new blogger, it’s been 3 weeks but I still have lot to learn and I care about your feedbacks. I’ve just posted two new post, please check them out if you’re interested. Thank you ! potterandbeyond.wordpress.com

    1. Nice idea! I hate paying full price for anything so I like this. I followed on Twitter… sometimes blogs that have multiple updates per day or daily jam up the wordpress reader so it’s hard to find the value or the one you’re really looking for. But that’s just me. Perfect for twitter though. Make sure you link Twitter through the “social” tab so it all flows over! 🙂

      1. Ibotta is really a great app, and you don’t have to change any habbits or do anything extra outside of snap a quick photo of your receipt. Follow the link in the post so they know I sent you, it helps me keep the lights on around here, haha!! Happy Saving

  2. Hello and welcome, new folks! We’re really excited to meet you.

As usual, I just want to remind everyone that we moderate the comments on First Friday pretty heavily — this is really a space for brand new people to introduce themselves and meet one another, and for others to welcome and support them.

If you’re not here to either share your (recent) first post or leave a supportive comment, please head to the Community Pool, which is where any blogger can seek feedback on any aspect of blogging. And if you’re not sure what the guidelines here are, please read the above post — or just ask!

    Happy blogging, y’all:)

    1. Yeah so you delete my posts, but people with about 60 followers are welcome here? So whats your criteria for new folks? Please give me a definition. It doesnt feels very welcome here.

      1. We go solely by date — as the post notes, we ask that anything shared here have been published within the last month, so we remove comments from folks who’ve already been blogging for more than a month. There are so many new bloggers each week that we work to keep First Fridays as focused on them as possible, and offer the Community Pool threads (where there is an awesome community of folks) for anyone who no longer meets the guidelines here.

    1. Welcome! FYI: that link goes to your dashboard, which is private, so people won’t be able to see your site. The simplest way to get the public link is to go to your blog’s main page and click on the post title. Then, copy the address you see in your browser’s address bar and use that. Here’s your site: https://maintainingsanitynow.wordpress.com/

I also noticed that your blog’s home page still has some of placeholder text on it. You can find your theme’s details here: https://wordpress.com/themes/affinity — it’ll help you learn to customize and configure all the parts of your home page.

    1. Hey your blog looks nice but it would be great if you could fill out the text widget on the right of the page! Maybe put in some information about yourself?

    2. It looks like your blog is still under construction. I wish I knew how to help better, but I am still learning too. I would like to read your post when you have it all together! Happy Friday!

    3. You’ve written a thoughtful post! If you don’t mind my making a stylistic suggestion and that would be to break it up into smaller paragraphs. Visually it makes it easier to read than one big chunk. Welcome and keep up with the thoughtful posts! 🙂

    1. I love your first post and the idea behind your blog! The text widget on the right of your blog is full of the standard text so it might be an idea to fill it in with something or maybe remove it if you prefer! Excited to see what you post next!

    2. It’s amazing how you have started out your blog with such a creative post. Now I want to see what more you can offer 🙂

    3. Really well done! Followed and looking forward to your next posts. One suggestion, I don’t see an active widget for non-wordpress followers. You may want to add that so people without wordpress accounts can follow you as well. 🙂

  3. Hey blogging Friends! Happy Friday!!

I started my blog a week ago. Every day this week I feel like I have learned a LITTLE bit more than the day before. I’m really trying to reach out and meet other bloggers, see how they write, the way their site looks, stuff like that. I am also interested in getting honest feedback/critique on my site and my writing. I am trying really hard to stay consistent and keep a similar tone throughout. Please read my newest post I wrote yesterday!

    1. Hey! Great blog Kristen! I can really empathise with the anxiety issue, and I’m glad to hear that things have become easier for you.
You may (or may not!) Like to check out my blog- I’m new around here too- but I’ve been writing about wellbeing and mental health issues- hopefully there might be something in there that resonates with you xxx

    2. Hi Kristen! I admire your faith! Great post! In regards to your blog i think it looks very nice and clean, easy to read. Which is great! It might be easier on yourself to write less per post. This way readers can absorb your post and remained focused! But hey just a suggestion! I think your writing is good!

      1. Thank you Matt! I’m trying to figure out how to do that. Always been a problem of mine. I’m a talker. I usually go over word count in my college studies as well. But, this is a great challenge for me and I look forward to accomplishing it in the future.

    1. Great post! I think we’re all superheroes in our own way 😉
Like you, I’m new to blogging, and decided to start it as part of my own recovery and self development… And I’m loving it! It feels so good to share and to know that in doing so, you might just inspire someone else. Xx

      1. Thank you for the kind words. I just hope I can make it through this thing called life, let alone inspire anyone 🙂. I wish you every success on your road to recovery also. I’ll be reading (and writing)

    1. I left a comment on your blog, but would encourage you to fill in your About page. Tell folks a little about yourself — include at least what country you live in, some hobbies, interests, goals.

I really enjoyed the story about your “best friend.” Pets can certainly make life better and have been proven to help pull people out of depression. As I said in my comment, you can share this with more people if you use categories and tags so others can find you.

    1. I really enjoyed this! I gave you a follow and look forward to your next post. 2 suggestions: You have your social media widgets enabled, but when I clicked on the Twitter icon it doesn’t go to YOUR account. I suggest either linking them or hiding the widget. I would also suggest putting in the widget that allows non-wordpress readers to follow you by putting in their email address. 🙂

      1. Thank you! I will definitely take your advice, I thought the social media widgets were an issue as I haven’t set up accounts yet. I will also add the email widget. Thanks again! 🙂

  4. I tried to post my first post but I think it failed…just shows how good I am at this (this is also sounding like a very confusing sentence now that I read it back but ok!). I also submitted two daily prompts (yesterday and the day before) so I’m not sure I’m allowed to post my first ever post here but I’m going to try again…I’ve only been doing this a week so please bear with me…

    My very first post…

    1. I enjoyed your blog so much! I think you are a great writer. There were some grammar issues, but nothing crazy. If you are worried about that then try using grammarly to help you sharpen those skills. I liked it just the way it was though.

    1. Hello! Liked and followed. Good concept. I look forward to your next posts. Just a couple of comments. You have social media widgets visible/active on your page but they (twitter symbol for example) doesn’t link to YOUR account. I would suggest linking it or hiding the widget. Also I don’t see an email followers area… some of your most loyal readers will be your email followers. I suggest putting in a widget for email followers visible. Welcome! 🙂

      1. Hi again Marie! I can’t seem to figure out how to edit the social media widgets. I don’t use my twitter but could start. I’m very active on Instagram so could link that too. Do you know how to do this? Many thanks 💗

      2. Hi! If you click on “My sites” on the top left then “sharing” it will show the areas you can connect to. 🙂

      3. To get to that widget, go to your blog, click on a post title, then go to My Site > Customize > Widgets. You’ll see “Sidebar” as one of the widget locations — that’s where that widget lives. Click “Sidebar,” then click “Social Media Widget” and you’ll be able to edit it and add links to your specific profiles.
