Community Pool

The place for feedback, advice, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. Hey guys, new post up from the land of a globetrotting science nerd! I’m off to Ethiopia next year to try to combat brain-drain and promote scientific research across the country.

    Science for the win!

I’d love your opinions and tips, mostly on whether my posts are accessible for non-science types (I want to communicate with everyone, not just biology PhDs!). Also if there are any well-travelled folks here that can give me some Ethiopian advice, I’ll gladly pay you in virtual coffees… I’ve never been to Africa before so I’m basically a little deer in the headlights.

Cheers and science love to you all!

  2. Hi all. I’m a girl trying to raise awareness for animals through my paid (& free!!) service. I just made some updates and I would like to have your feedback! How does it look? Should I change anything? I would really like some feedback on how I’m doing. THANK YOU 🙂

    Welcome

    1. hi there, I visited your blog. It’s fun! I’m in love with the picture you’ve chosen of the swirling music notes, but it’s very pixelated — I wish the resolution was better. also, the font you’ve chosen is great but it becomes difficult to read when you use all caps.

  4. I’ve been blogging on WordPress for a few years. Recently took the Blogging101 class and that helped me boost the look and feel and content of my site a good bit. Last night, I posted what I thought was a funny article and, so far, it has gotten only 1 Like and no comments. I am active in Liking and commenting on other blogs and this is the least feedback I have gotten on anything in a while, so I am hoping you kind folks can tell me if this is funny or just lame. 1. OK Tim, now I don’t feel so bad. I thought maybe my post was too boring for the masses, but I guess a good comment is just hard to find. I’m not going to let it stop me

  5. Ben, I am using Facebook, and tweeting all over the place to no avail. I thing my theme is all off, and the print looks too small. Please go take a look and comment, critique, complain, suggest…whatever! Just give me some idea what I am doing wrong. I get a lot of daily post in my email, but no comments to mention. Is there just no one interested in what I have to say?

    1. It sounds like you’re already doing a lot of the things that are really important to get your blog out there. One thing that you didn’t mention but which is critical is interaction with other bloggers — especially with bloggers who are interested in and publish about similar topics and interests. It takes a certain degree of effort, but it’s often much more productive in terms of generating a response than just sending your posts into the ether.

I hope this helps! And please don’t be discouraged — it often takes some time before people find their audience.

  6. Hey guys! I’ve having a bit of trouble when it comes to images. The image you post in your blog gets cut at times, when it appears as a post. How do I get the full image to appear when followers view my post in their Reader? Thanks! 🙂

  7. I just started a blog and I am a child, but I have no idea how to get readers. I would also be very happy if any of you knew how to make a link on wordpress. It would help a lot, and I would get more readers, which is what I need. It is not a business site, anyone is welcome. I have tried to make it interesting and I hope to expand it. But my biggest goal is to get more readers, and more comments. If any of you knew what to do, I would be very happy. I have spoken to other people, and gotten ideas, but more would help. But if you have no idea what to do then please search: autorows.wordpress.com. It would be very helpful. Thank you.
