Photos We Loved: Boundaries

A selection of stunning images from our recent photo challenge.

From walls and fences to the limitless expanse of the ocean, you’ve shared hundreds of moving photos in response to our recent photo challenge, “Boundaries.”

As always, it was incredibly hard to select just a handful of standout entries. Here are a few that I found particularly striking.

Sara Zancotti

When we think of the Eiffel Tower, it’s usually its pointed verticality that comes to mind. Sara Zancotti instead focuses on the fences that keep visitors from jumping, giving an eerie, slightly oppressive vibe to this iconic structure.

The world is a book…

Blogger Amy snapped a gorgeous portrait of a horse staring back at her from the other side of a fence. Its plaintive-yet-defiant look almost erases the distance between human and animal.

SpoonGood

Boundaries don’t have to be rigid, stark things. I love the bright softness of the moss that separates massive, lichen-covered slabs of stone in SpoonGood‘s photo.

Life is Celebration…

A colorful portrait of a woman lifting her veil in India highlights the tension between transparency and opaqueness.

Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera

A bridge is by definition a bottleneck, a confined space that lets people cross an obstacle. Lignum Draco (the pseudonym of the blogger behind Etcetera Etcetera Etcetera) makes this point evident in a breathtaking photo of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge, complete with a group of intrepid hikers climbing up its arch.

Finally, to think of boundaries is also to dream about their absence. This dramatic image of cloudy skies over water, over at WitchWithaView, can make even the biggest skeptic believe that (almost) anything’s possible.

For everyone who participated in the challenge, thank you! I look forward to the next one.
