Writing 201: Poetry  is a two-week course that lets anyone who dabbles in verse (or wants to start) practice the poet’s craft with a supportive community of like-minded bloggers — learn more about its structure and topics!

This session runs from Monday, October 5 through Friday, October 16 and has been updated since we last offered it, so folks who joined us last time can find fresh inspiration.

I have never considered myself a writer, but after this workshop I feel I can consider writing, writing more frequently, and perhaps with more ease.

How do Blogging U. courses work?

Blogging U. courses exist for one reason: to help you meet your own blogging and writing goals.

  • Courses are free, flexible, and open to all.
  • You’ll get a tasks or writing prompts to respond to each weekday at midnight GMT, along with our best advice and favorite resources. Do them on your own time, and interpret them however makes sense for your specific blog and personal goals — we’re not grading you, we’re not checking to make sure you complete every task, and there’s no “wrong” way to use the resources we give you. Weekends are free!
  • Each course has a private community site, the Commons, for chatting, connecting, and seeking feedback and support. Daily Post staff and Happiness Engineers will be on hand to answer your questions and offer guidance and resources.

  2. Please could you expand on how your courses work? I live in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, South Wales and, for the 24 years I was in Exeter, Devon, England, wrote snippets, which all come together in a whole, named “Poems out of Madness”, denoting the bipolar disorder from which I suffer. One of my predecessors, the Reverend J R Owens, won the bard’s crown and chair one Eisteddford. It would be great to aspire to those heights. Just let me know.

    1. They’re run via email; you get a writing prompt and resources each weekday for the duration of the course. There’s also a private site where you can share your work with other classmates for feedback and support, and WordPress.com staff are there as well, to point you in the right direction and clarify anything that’s unclear.

  9. I did the previous poetry course and it was enlightening. Can’t wait to do it again. It’s good that they are offering new clusters of inspiration instead of the repeat of the previous season. I’m excited.

      You can expect all-new word prompts, and some major remixing of the other components of the assignments, so that even if you took the course in February you wouldn’t feel like you’re doing the exact same thing.

  10. I found the last course so helpful and still make use of some of the tools in my writing of both poetry and prose. Delighted to read that there will be some updates to the previous course. Though it was so enjoyable I would gladly have done it again.

    1. You can use either — all Blogging U. Courses are open to everyone regardless of where your blog lives.

      You would still need to sign in to your WordPress.com account in order to access the Commnons, but you may post your poems anywhere you wish.

  24. I have been here since a fortnight when writing 101 & blogging 101 commenced in September. Its really amazing how I have got booked to this world of writing and reading everyone’s so interesting and different post. Every individual sees the same thing, but perceives it so differently!! I hope to register in other writing events as and when they come. I have started learning the ropes of blogging slowly and find it interesting. My blog is http://srividya2015.wordpress.com/
