Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. Greetings pool-swimmers.

I have turned film critic for my post today, although the film is rather old, and my review is rather short and somewhat biased, I hope it still makes entertaining reading?

    http://ismithwords.com/2015/07/20/the-monday-muse-3-hours-and-58-minutes/

I have also been hosting a flash fiction challenge now for a few weeks, which is going from strength to strength. If you’re in need of some inspiration, or you’d like to get involved in the Literary Lion community to get feedback and to read some inspiring work, have a look at the latest prompt here…

Thank you! I appreciate any feedback and involvement and will always reciprocate! 🙂

      1. I think that’s the point of our reviews, it’s about what you think :). I also think the mooie is simply overrated.

    1. Excellent. My favorite kind of movie review: straight to the point. Your site is a lot of fun. It’s easy to want to stay there and click on things. Don’t take the job too seriously and you will be just fine! 🙂

    2. There seems to be a fashion for writing enormously fat novels these days, and the virtue of being concise seems to have been forgotten. I thought your Gone with the Wind review said all it needed to. Well done!

  2. Cheers! I’m Leisel from Skill Up Skillet, a weekly updated geek and game themed food blog that reads like anything but a food blog. I strive for outstanding, inspired recipes, a twist of humor, and a healthy dose of sarcastic wit. The kitchen is my battleground and each recipe I conquer is a personal ‘skill up’ for me. Right now I’m pretty happy with the direction my blog has taken and I’m striving to gain more followers. Like, exponentially more followers. Yes, you, I’m talking to you!
That said, what’s the best way you’ve found to gain and engage your followers? I feel like I’m right on the threshold of something amazing and I want to take it to its limit and beyond.
Finally, I’d be immensely appreciative if I could get some more eyes and feedback for the following articles:
Chaliapin Steak (Shokugeki no Soma)- The sauce is so good you can even vegetarianize it. Yes, ‘vegetarianize’ is a word now: https://skillupskillet.wordpress.com/2015/07/09/shokugeki-no-soma-my-bastardized-yet-addictive-version-of-chaliapin-steak/
Omelette du Fromage (Dexter’s Laboratory) – Omelettes are one of my specialties and I was thrilled to make this. Also, if you’d like to see a comically vicious review on some weird French cheese, this post is for you: https://skillupskillet.wordpress.com/2015/07/16/omelette-du-fromage-a-dexters-laboratory-recipe/
I feel like these two are some quality posts but didn’t attract many views because a. Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars) is a relatively new manga/anime and has a sort of underground following and b. I feel the reference from Dexter’s Laboratory is a little obscure for some.
As of right now I’m currently two recipes ahead and can’t wait to see what kind of reactions I get in the next couple weeks. Can’t wait to interact with you all; Community Pool is the only thing that makes me look forward to Mondays. Cheers! (And hi anyone from Blogging 201!)

    1. I’ve said it before but I’ll happily say it again, just love the originality of your blog, I’ve not seen anything like it, and I could definitely have done with it when I was a six year old Nintendo fanatic.

I am going to be 30 soon though, so I think some childhood regression might be just what I need, and some sort of Mario themed treat…

      1. This immediately prompted a fit of cursing at my computer screen: I have a posting schedule. It’s filled in through the second week of September. I’m doing great and actually planning things. AND I HAVE BEEN TOTALLY TAKING EVERYTHING AFTER THIS WEEK OUT OF BLOODY ORDER. Related: There’s going to be YET ANOTHER Mario post (as if 3 is too many, lol) by the end of August.

Now I have to redo the Excel spreadsheet all. over. again. For the nth time. It is so Monday.

  3. Howdy amigos,

The next post I’ll write is a detailed photo journal of my six months in South America, but it feels unusual to be writing about something this broad instead of an individual event or week. I’m hoping that you can read one of the two posts below and offer feedback, as these are the most similar to what I’ll be posting tomorrow.

      1. I overhauled the entire blog. By overhaul, I mean exporting the posts and everything and deleting all the posts.
I noticed that I hurry to make a blog post so that people would come and read my blog, only to feel that I didn’t do a good enough job. I decided to keep the well-written recent posts and start over.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I feel the same way, i have been writing since a year and half now and i hardly have viewers. But deleting a post isn’t the solution, you can’t delete something that you wanted to say. You did a good enough job, if you don’t feel like you did a good job then edit and proofread. Improve.

My advice, it is purely subjective. Good Luck!

    1. It’s totally worth it.
But also depends on the type of blog you’re running. I maintain two blogs mainly: one is a minimal blog devoid of almost any widgets while the other one, my primary blog is significantly populated with everything- you can check out out of you click my username. And for me it’s worth it.

      1. I upgraded because there is an old theme that I always liked but hated the colors. I like the readability of the theme, but, to me, the primary colors took that away.
I think customization worth checking out.
Instead of customizing, you could try to find a premium theme that you could live with. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t find a premium theme that I liked enough to keep.

    1. Too right! You’re not wrong at all. I live in London, i.e the noisiest place on the planet and filled with people that don’t seem to realise that their noise affects someone outside of their ignorant bubble. So when I’m disturbed by building noise on a Sunday… the one time I might get to sleep in, it f****** p***** me off! Well done for making a stand. These people don’t realise how miserable it can make you. I hope you get somewhere!

    2. I would (figuratively) cut a *****. No joke. I wake up at 4:50am 5 days a week and on the two days I can sleep in… no. Once the city decided to blow up a bridge about two miles from my house (planned). I still heard it and felt the shockwave. And that was the last of my sleep. I screamed down the house, as you should too. They’ll not hear the end of it.

  5. Hello!

I helped organise a live teenage diary reading night last week and I’ve got some videos and audio of me reading out diary entries.

Seeing as my blog is my genuine teenage diary entries from the 90s, I’m thinking of uploading the video and/or audio. I’ve already got one video on there from a previous event but that’s just on my sidebar.

I was wondering, do you think it’s worth creating a new page for things like that or just embed it in a post? I just don’t want to end up with too many pages and it getting overcrowded.

    Any other ideas welcome!

    Tess

    1. Oh, that is a hard decision. The only thing I’d be concerned about if you embed videos/audio files in your posts is the possibility for slowing some people’s computers down. My vote’s for a dedicated page, I think.

      Like

    2. Hmm. .. personally I would want to just scroll thru the post and click the video, but as Liesel pointed out, that could slow the operation down….. SO I’d say make a youtube site, upload stuff there, and then link that into your blog. A hassle, I know, but I think that would work best.

I’m going to rewrite my ‘About’ page this week. Got quite good feedback for my existing page but it doesn’t actually tell you much about the blog itself. You lovely people always inspire me, so in your collective opinion, what makes a good ‘About’ page?

You can tell us about how you started your blog or talk a bit about your topic on your blog. Where you come from. How you got to the place in your life now. Or you could give us a piece on how to make a James where you list all the ingredients on how to make a you.
      Lots of things.

      1. It was an ending which I only thought of with a few days to go to keep my ‘Sunday post’ promise. The fact that I literally wrote the story week on week was a real test of my ‘pantster’ style of writing. There was no planning involved what so ever. It was an interesting task. But yes, a category on my website for the short story’s is a good idea! Thanks. Mark

  9. Hi there, Rajat here. I am a travel blogger and share my travel experiences across India. Its been quiet a while that I have started to write but simply unable to understand what annoys my readers the most.

I get (jealous) and frustrated (that’s obvious, I am human afterall )often when I find that no more than 10 people, sometimes, none come to my blog, as if I am talking to dead people, but what frustrates me more that when I read through the huge crowd of other bloggers from my niche,

I do not find anything less that I have written that makes me unapproachable. I have tried commenting, liking, reading others posts but it seems nothing is working out.

I have been struggling way too far, heading for a writers block. If only someone can guide me and honestly tell me, what is the damn problem with my blog!!!

      1. No. I had read through them though. I found that there were a range of topics to write including travel, which may go against the niche I intend to write about, since I have only been writing about travel so far…

Will it still help if I write ‘off-topic’ posts on a travel blog??

        Like

      2. I am not really sure how to directly answer your question about writing off-topic posts but what I do know is that some travel bloggers are also joining the blog events. Several things:
        – Have you tried enrolling the free course of Blogging 101? because you will meet a lot of bloggers as you go through the course which are potential readers. 🙂
        – Have you established your social media presence? (Twitter/FB/IG)

        🙂

      3. To answer the second question, Yes,

to answer the first one, I did, but was not able to complete the course due to extensive travel. I added those trips to my blog!!

But surely, if it doesnt take my blog out of the niche and put me on a general platform, I will consider participating in the competition…Thanks a lot Berry..So sweet of you..You are really patient..I appreciate

    1. Patience is the key.
If you write in a niche category it will take a while to be noticed and build followers, but it is a slow process. Reconsider how you use tags and categories as these are how your posts will be sorted and displayed to others. For the same reason, look closely at your excerpts and how your main photos are framed, as these are what people will see when deciding whether or not to read your post.

Of course interesting content is the most important part of your writing, those are just some tips for being noticed and making a first impression.
      Good luck!

    2. Patience, and persistence.
Readers will not come flocking all at once, but they will come eventually!!
Best thing to do is participate in forums and comment things like this one and contribute meaningful comments and critiques for other bloggers.
for others to be interested in you, you must often first be interested in them.
The first step is to make great content, which you have done. The second thing is to be involved in the blogging community.

  10. Hello! I am from Italy and I have started to write a blog mainly about videogames. I am following the tips of this old course https://wordpress.com/dailypost/courses/blogging-101-zero-to-hero/ and I think It’s great and helpful. Now, I noticed that It will be a new course in August of zero to hero and I have some questions about it.
1)Should I follow this course although I am using the old course of zero to hero?
    2) Is it free? XD Sorry for this question, but I am here recently.

    1. Welp. I definitely don’t speak Italian outside of some of the dishes served at my family’s pizzeria and a few choice swear words but there’s Google Translate for that. You have a decent start but it’s a little hard to wade through. Have you considered adding more (relevant) pictures to your posts? And do you have a ‘formal’ About page?

The blogging courses are free. As I didn’t take Blogging 101 I can’t really comment on that, I’m in Blogging 201. I say, if you want to do it again, why not?

      (Hail, fellow gamer!)

      1. Thank you for the comment.
Is it a little hard to wade through my blog? Is it because there aren’t any pictures in my blog? Maybe, I should add more pictures when I write a new post.
I don’t have an about page, but I have written some info about my blog in the text widget “Un po’ di info sul mio blog”.
        I have some other questions:
What is the difference between 101 and 201? What mean this numbers?

        Like

      2. Yes, and yes. Pictures and (sometimes) shorter paragraphs help break posts up better. I read/translated the widget but I think your readers would like to know a little more about you.

101 is the basic blogging course for beginners. It helps you build and develop your site and whatnot. 201 is for growing your brand and building your audience.

  12. Hi everyone. Around 6 months ago I changed the format of my blog from what was simply a link to my instagram account previously, to a place where I now upload more thought out/detailed posts of my film photography.
I have found that the followers I gained in the previous format do not seem to engage with this new format (no longer commenting or liking, and with much lower view counts) so I wanted to see if anyone here shared my interests?

I would appreciate any feedback on my posts (actually on the posts would be great) whether it its something about the photos you liked or some constructive criticism and I would love to interact with people who are interested in photography/film photography; perhaps I would enjoy your work too! Or any advice on the blog in general, including how to make it more engaging would be much appreciated as a comment to this post.

Here’s one of our more popular posts on how to get more out of your next Chipotle meal: http://west205.com/blog/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-chipotle-mexican-grill/.

If you’re a student, we offer some great advice on how to increase your grades without cramming (interesting read for others too!): http://west205.com/blog/increase-grades-without-cramming/

Please subscribe or make a donation if you enjoyed our content!

    1. Really love the line ‘But I needed you, to fill the gaps between my fingers’. Very emotive, and the poem is excellent. I always think poetry should be kinda raw so I’m glad you’re so emotive. 🙂

    1. I commented directly on the post. I was so looking forward to reading the interview, and it does not disappoint! I should note, though, that you linked here to your most recent post instead of the interview. 🙂

    2. I read the entire interview and loved it. I think that the questions you asked her were so poignant and on point. They were very well thought out, direct and interesting. You are on the way to becoming one heck of a mental health advocate! Thank you for all that you do!

      1. Thank you so much! I just wish there were more opportunities close to where I live for mental health advocacy. Most programs are two hours away from me. I do, however, plan on moving closer to those opportunities when finances allow.

I’m glad you liked the questions! I was so nervous that I was going to ask dumb questions and completely fail at the interview, but I was able to pull through with some good ones in the end. 🙂

    1. Agatha Christie is one of my most favourite writers and can we just talk about how awesome murder on orient express is?! It blew my mind away, seriously.

Anyway, best of luck with your challenge. I hope you complete it! 🙂

    1. Hello! Welcome to wordpress! 🙂 I will warn you, blogging is a terrible addiction. You will find yourself up late into the night typing out your thoughts long after everyone else has turned the lights out…..or perhaps you shall be a reasonable blogger and only write as you feel so inclined. Either way, the experience is enjoyable to say the least.

    1. Love it. From personal experience, careful who you share that blog with in your personal life. Once upon a time someone in my high school class found my (now deleted) blog… it was grossly misinterpreted and it didn’t end well.
