Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once! We tend to delete duplicate comments asking for feedback on the same post.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • When leaving comments, please remember not to add your blog’s url as your signature. It’s kinda spammy: after all, your handle links directly to your blog.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.

  1. Hello lovely people of Community Pool. As a relatively new blogger I’m currently focusing on quantity over quality to build a blogging habit. But at some point I’d like to switch and focus more on making the content better. My worry is that if I don’t at least aim to post daily, I’ll end up going too long without posting anything and let the blog die. Anyone else suffer from this affliction?

    1. Maketh a schedule and kick yourself in the buttocks if you don’t stick to it. I’ve been able to stick to mine for 6 months. Also, I feel like a horrible person thinking I’ve let my followers down if I’m late. >_>

      1. Are you posting every day, or posting new content? I agree with Leisel. You will burn out if you try to publish new content every day. Some people have features, the best of the week, for example. That would enable you to publish on your site without creating new content every day. I publish five times a week but only create new content three times a week. Like Leisel advised, I use an editorial calendar and stick to it, so I don’t let my followers down.

      5. Ah Leisel, I can always count on you for good advice. Also 6 months is an impressive time to be sticking to a schedule. I will try and maintain a similar discipline but I fear I may more than occasionally falter. If my blog is still alive in six months I will be quite impressed with myself…

    2. It is okay to put a effort into one post… It is worth to publish a post weekly that you put effort on it thatn publish average posts everyday…

Hi James, tempting as it is to post everyday to gain more readership, I would suggest you focus more on making your content more polished( there is no way of assessing “better”, so just try to make it more presentable) and posting 2-3 days per week, preferably on fixed days. That creates anticipation which is so important to get regular readership. Believe me, even though its nice to see the numbers go up in terms of followers, very few stick around to engage regularly with what you have to say. Also, try and find like-minded bloggers, as they’re more likely to read your work consistently.
      I’ve recently started blogging daily to bring some variety to my blog. Otherwise, for the longest time, I posted original content on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and a quote on Sunday. That got me a consistent readership. Try and see if you can also find a schedule that suits you.

    4. I’m new to blogging and my blogs is mainly about life issues and God but I feel your pain so to say. I post new content and tried to do it daily but sometimes I feel lost with what to write about. I just urge you to follow what’s in your heart and try to re blog some of your material. I just want to let you know we are all facing this problem and we only encourage you to keep with it!

    5. Sometimes you might have a lot of ideas on what to write about and you might have heaps of time to do so. Write then and schedule those posts over the next couple of days. Or make a little schedule. I saw another great tip of a blogger who keeps a prompt box in case she runs out of ideas what to write about. Sit down and write random words on a little piece of paper and stick it in the box. If you end up not knowing what to write about just pick one and then write about it. Or check out the Daily Prompts on this site. You can pick whichever you like.

    6. Hi! I’m new to blogging, and by new, I mean just about a week or so… So, I thought I’d just stick to one post a week, i.e., just on the weekends, and with time (once I’m habituated to writing and can keep up with the schedule, also I’ll have a better idea as to what exactly I should write about) I’ll increase it to 2-3 posts a week.

      i think all of us have been in this kind of problem and just like they all said, you can write down your ideas and if you are “in the zone” and finished the post earlier, you can use the schedule feature of wordpress. 😀 it helps a lot. I use it esp if i go on travel or vacations. 😀

    8. Sometimes. I’m a student and I work. Sometimes, I don’t get to blog when I want to or I can, I just don’t have any great ideas. What you can do is carry around a little journal to write your thoughts in and then when you get to blog, you can write.

    9. Yes!! I try to do a couple of posts a week, but what with exams in May, I haven’t been posting as much as I should. But I definitely agree, I try to get a lot of posts (maybe one or two a week) to start with, and then really start focusing on my content later on once I’ve got a few followers and cut that amount down. Don’t kick yourself if you find you’re too busy and don’t have time; you can make it up at a later date!

    12. Thanks to Blogging 201, I learned the value of keeping a calendar on which I schedule blog posts. I prefer posting quality content, so I have a goal of posting 3x weekly, which is more doable for me than blogging daily. If you have enough stats (or when you do), you can start taking note of trends in your blog traffic and when people tend to visit your blog more often. On the days that are more popular, you can plan to post!

    1. I like this format of posting, “If we were having coffee,” very charming, warm and engaging. BTW, are Brits drinking coffee a lot these days? My grandmother was born in New Zealand around the turn of the twentieth century and I NEVER saw her drink coffee; my Yankee grandfather had to make due with instant.       1. Read through it and it’s a fascinating experience. One thing I would say, if I were criticising constructively, is that it’s a very long piece to read in one go. If you’re writing seven day entries in the future, I’d suggest perhaps breaking them up and posting them on separate days, not only for your own ease but for the ease of the reader also. I love your style though, very natural, it feels like you’re chatting directly to an old friend, which is great 🙂

    2. This is such a beautiful post, and even more beautiful because of the prompt. I feel very small saying this, sine you are so marvellous in your other posts, but, in this particular post, I feel the work could have been shorter, or more concise, since the theme of every verse is more or less constant. “Belgian mud” and “makeshift cradle” are absolutely beautiful. Other than that, the words hit me in the right places. I would also like to ask what inspired the picture along with the post?

      A very faithful follower of yours, and would love to get some criticism.

      1. Thank you, noopur, that’s very kind. I actually agree with you on this one, I do think it’s slightly too long, and all writing is open to criticism so I thank you for your honest thoughts.

        The photo is inspired by the content of the poem itself, the poppies representing the lives lost in the World War 1 conflict, whose poets inspired me to write this poem.

        I’m thrilled to hear you follow my blog, I follow yours also, and am always very impressed by your poetic ability. I think you’re much too hard on yourself and you really are a wordsmith of the highest order, so please keep it up.

    4. Loved the poem, see comment I wrote directly on blog. I figured you were a Brit from your spelling. My grandmother was born in colonial N.Z. then came to the States. Your Oxford education shines through in your work. A couple of my favorite writers were Oxford professors of English, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Taking a somewhat academic approach, I have a B.A. in English) I write about how science fiction parallels with the Bible in order to encourage, much like how Tolkien said that the Bible is the ultimate faery tale.     2. I like your overall layout, but your left menu area can be a little hard to read with the background (though it is a nice background). Is it possible to create a menu at the top of your blog with your theme? If you’re able to shift some things around there it would be a little easier and more comprehensive to navigate.

      Something fun to do… post-wise? I’d like to see some puppy adventures, either staged or real. Dog park? I am a sucker for fur kids.

      1. Thank you tons! I got that fixed, but I am wondering also if I can add a stuff under my parent menu? Maybe that’s not the right wording. But, for instance, one of my menu items is “Travel.” I would like to be able to then add a sub category under that parent menu for say “United States,” “Caribbean,” etc. How can I do this?

  5. Allo, allo! Leisel from Skill Up Skillet here. I run a weekly updated geek and game themed food blog. I make recipes based on video games, movies, and neat stuff in general. There is also a fair bit of sarcasm because apparently I can’t disable that feature in my brain. Enjoy that.

    I’ve been getting some really excellent feedback over the last few weeks and it’s starting to (gasp) look like I’m doing something right. So then, today’s points:

    1. Main focus is building a following. SuS has a FB, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram account already but I’m looking for ways to network and build my audience. Network is a funny word when you’re not a people person. I am trying, I swear.
    2. I am considering adding a sort of ‘In the News’ page to the blog to sort of showcase where SuS has been featured (Starcraft on Twitter, Arcade Block on FB, guest post stuffs). I thought it might lend a little credibility. That, and I’ve been completely geeking out about it. Good idea? Bad idea?
    3. People have actually started looking at my About page (y’know, the one where I hide). Does the About page do a good job? Should I be adding anything? I suck at talking about myself.

Till now, I’ve been looking for a jar with proper liquid in it. You helped me realize I can add the liquid/food myself and just focus on the right jar 😉 Your blog is unique and you seem to know your passion.       1. StumbleUpon is a cool place to get noticed, but building a following there is a tedious task and it’s a wee bit difficult to put it to its full potential, I’m still trying to understand it properly, maybe it might help you to increase your following.
      2. The “In the News” thing sounds good, it might add a little bit of credibility to your blog, but make sure that it doesn’t clutter the whole blog.
      3. The about page is important! It’s your first impression at the reader, spice it up!

      1. Bianca – all your poetry is beautiful!! The poem you specifically asked about has lovely visuals. There were a couple of lines that were long and I would break those up, if possible, into two lines. I really think you have a lot of talent and should look into poetry writing contests.

        I would love feedback on my blog. I have experimented with a few poems (Black Boots and White Wine) but most of my focus is on my experiences as a foster-adopt parent. Still, I’d love your input!

    1. I’ll give you some feedback. I feel that your current layout doesn’t give your blog an exciting feel. You use pictures to draw us into your messages. I would change the layout to almost a grid type or flow type (sorry I don’t the name for every layout on WP) I do however like how you have your Search and category section visible to your audience. I would suggest taking out the “blogs I follow” widget as this is unnecessary and clogs up space on the blog.

    3. Hi Muhammad! The only thing I would suggest changing is the color scheme of your blog. Just a pop of color will do! Right now it’s just black and white, which gives your page a very “flat” look. I feel that adding a few bright colors will add more depth and excitement to your blog.

    1. Participation in the Community Pool is a good start. Depending on your focus, you may want to make accounts for your blog on various social media platforms. You can also join communities, groups, forums, etc. YOU are your own best advertiser; you get exactly what you put into it.

    2. Social media is a great start. Connect your blog to your Facebook Page or create a Facebook Page for your blog. That way it will increase your exposure.

      Also commenting on other blogs that are similar to yours. I go the “Reader” section and find blogs that talk about the things I like. I comment and get more viewers back to my blog that way. But it takes time and exposure comes with interesting topics, pictures, etc.

    1. Here are some things that struck me when reading your blog, but they are only my thoughts and you are welcome to act on them or ignore them as you see fit.
      *The theme works fairly well, but personally given that your site isn’t so much about images, I would go for one which shows an exert from the post. However, the images are nearly all good (the Bond one is a little pixellated) and the theme works well with the good sized images
      *Consider changing around your widgets and linking to your about page in the sidebar (I couldn’t see a link, but that may just be me)
      *I’m not sure if you’re aware, but it is possible to insert Youtube videos into posts
      *Consider checking for typos and apostrophe errors (‘James Bonds’ )
      These are only minor points, overall I very much enjoyed reading your site.

        First of all, and most importantly thanks for reading! Means a lot to me 🙂
        Now, I am trying to develop the image area of the site, because only recently have I begun delving deeply into the technicals which are best represented with images, so from now on you can expect non-pixellated HD Images!
        I’ll try my best to include the YouTube videos, but (unlike me) most people are really afraid of spoilers and stuff so I try not to give away any plot points, but I’ll surely try including some videos from now on.
        And the widgets area will be worked upon 🙂

      I think the theme/layout of your page is very fitting for the focus of your blog. I would usually say that it’s too dark, but seeing as you write movie reviews, it’s definitely appropriate. It reminds me of sitting in a dark movie theater, anxiously waiting for the opening scene to appear on the screen.

      As for the content, the only thing I would suggest is providing a brief overview/synopsis of the movie first and then delving into the review. I haven’t seen this movie nor it’s prequel and after your reading your post, I’m still unsure of what the movie is about.

Sadly, people’s attention spans aren’t very long nowadays so I suggest posting sections of this piece on a daily/weekly basis; almost like a serial digest.   25. Ill admit there’s a huge part of me that would like feedback, but another part of me is not so sure. I did only just start and I’ve committed myself to posting once a day and to have a wide range of topics and to “reach people” but I don’t yet think of myself as a “blogger”. Is it just me?

    1. Don’t be afraid! It might seem daunting at first to open your work to criticism when you’re starting out, but people aren’t all that harsh in this community. It is very important to first and foremost, write for yourself before you write for others, but blogging is also about reaching out. People do end up relating to you, even if you didn’t think that was possible for that particular post. Also, there is no specific way you have to feel or be to call yourself a blogger. As long as you, you’re a blogger!

    2. I think some organization would help you a lot. Scrolling through your posts I see you have some social media pages and an Etsy, but I wouldn’t know that if I didn’t have the patience to look through your content. Perhaps add some widgets to your blog to advertise your Etsy and keep all your social media in one place? The GoFundMe link as well. Post everything up in one central location for ease of use.

      Also, are you using a centered font alignment or is it just your theme? It’s a little annoying to read through with the occasional ‘orphan’ at the bottom of a paragraph.

      1. I agree with that a lot. Im trying to figure out that right now categories and such, Im finding this not easy, but I do wish to get “organized” better.
        on the centering it seemed to work better on my smaller devices, but I see what your saying when I open the laptop.

      4. Thank you I did spend a bit of time yesterday reading some and I think I may create a child menu under the home menu and then pages there for each category…lol but even as I write that it sounds confusing! I am learning though and I will keep at it

      5. The only option I had to read more posts was to scroll down on the main page through every post. You can add more categories to your menu, or say add tag clouds, basically widgets of any kind will help
