Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging conversation.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

      1. I really liked that post! It has some great advice – especially the part about posting on Twitter in numbers divisible by 3. I must admit, this number of likes isn’t extremley common for me; I have just really promoted my recent posts through Twitter, and the Blogging101 Commons (as well as Community Pool too). That is an intersting suggestion about the subheadings; as a reader, do you feel they are neccessary? If so, when/ in what kind of posts?

    1. hi Sherina – i will write a comment on the blog as well – really love your content but something about the look and feel of the blog doesn’t feel the best for me – feels quite blocky if that makes sense – square – whereas your writing feels quite rounded – square feels a bit businesslike but i see you as someone with lightness and fun and spontaneity [if that glass full handing out smiles is anything to go by] and so there might be a theme that complements you and your style a little bit more…

      hope this is helpful

      1. Hi Brett, that’s some really interesting feedback – thank you! I personally really like my theme but I am going to play around with some other ones, or see if I can customize this one to be more “me”! Thank you again for your feedback. I had honestly not considered this, so your input is very much appreciated!!

    2. Hey Sherina. I love the design of your blog, everything looks professional.

I don’t know how much writing experience you have in blogging but you do a really good job at it.

The thing I enjoyed the most was those interview questions on the Libster award. I would want to use that on my blog. If you have 10 questions for me, that would be brilliant .

I come from the UK. Any feedback you can give me will be brilliant as I don’t have much blogging experience. Particularly in my writing I like to write lots and lots because I like to grab it as a mini novel and all my blogs are stored in one page. I would want to know if I could put a minimum of 5 or 7 blogs on one page so it makes it easier for the reader to leave comments without clicking on the specific blog.

Please link me back to your post after you’ve written it; I want to read your answers! 😀 I will check out your blog now and see what advice I am able to give you 🙂

Id like to see more imagery but that’s just me most likely, this is called wordpress for a reason after all. PLEASE check out my blog! I have started adding some images to my posts, but it’s slightly more work than simply writing (I find all my photos under privacy law stuff so I can share them freely, etc, and then I edit them and add words and such). I will definitely check out your blog! 🙂

      2. Gah! You found one! I realize this is a little random. I’m an esthetician and my main blogging focus is my beauty blog at the moment, but theater was always my first love. I’ve carried my community theater obsession into adulthood (most recently I played Tamora in Titus Andronicus this past October) I read your analysis of Stop Kiss which is sitting on my shelf right now. Anyway, I don’t have a ton of help as far as finding your people goes…I’m working on that myself…but I guess if the community pool worked once it could work again 🙂 I like the simplified look of what you have going on, but I’d love to see some categories and maybe a “start here” option in a menu. I think generally though it’s an amazing idea for a blog and I have a couple suggestions and comments that I’ll actually post on your blog posts themselves. I live in Provo, UT (beaucoup Mormons) so I feel like we’d have some similar content and language constraints based on our respective locales.

Anyway, what I’m spasmodically ranting about is that I love what you’ve got going and I’m looking forward to watching this blog unfold 🙂

      1. Hi Bianca,

I read your poem, I loved it. In the context of all that’s happening in India, and our continued struggle to get society to accept women as sentient beings and not objects, or upholders of moral values, this is especially relevant. If only people understood the simple idea of consent! 😦

I’d like to share your poem on my FB page, if that’s okay with you. And if you have the time, could you check out this poem here and tell me what you think.

That’s perhaps the easiest way, but there is also a linkup where you can add links (if you don’t, I’ll do it for you) and you can also use pingbacks. Any way of letting me and others know that you published a poem works just fine. Thanks for your comment and see you around in the blogosphere!

If you can’t include DIY’s for every blog post, then you can space them out with posts about arts & crafts in general. I’d also say that don’t get overwhelmed with posting often, just be consistent. Write for yourself! I wrote an article about how to maintain a blog for others, if you’d like to check it out 🙂

    3. Will all your posts be crafts you do? What medium are you using for the pendants and will we hear more about them? I’ve made jewelry with silver, brass, and copper. I was intrigued to know you are in the UK. You should elaborate more on the technique you used in “pulled paper”, I’d never heard of that style before.

      1. Hi, thanks for replying. 🙂 Well I make things with recycled materials, so that includes paper jewelry with found objects in a mixed media style. My other arts and crafts are also using recycled materials. So that’s the theme really – and I hadn’t thought about showing techniques or process because I didn’t think people would care much, haha! Lots to think about here, so thanks again for your reply.

    4. Hi – I enjoyed reading your posts (and thanks for the tips on sewing in zips!).

I think a lot of people would like to see how you did things – maybe you could just stop and take quick photos as you progress from raw materials to finished product. Sometimes clear photos are much easier to follow than written instructions. Everything that seems super-easy to you will seem undoable to a novice. I’m not an expert arts and crafts blogger – far, far from it, so I’m just speaking as an interested reader.

Lots of luck with your blog

      2. I suppose you could put the photos on a page and let your less confident readers click onto a link to the illustrated version. People feel a lot more secure when they can see something take shape – and mysterious processes like putting in a zip are easier when you have photos, or a human being in front of you.

Looking through your blog, I found that it was good you published shorter posts to allow your readers a quick breather, since you talk about heavy topics as well. I’m a new blogger myself, but the flow of yours looks like it’s going in a good direction. I know you write a broad range of topics, but you should also consider what audience you’re writing for as you choose a focus like catdiggedydog suggested.

      1. “Baby Steps” was absolutely heart breaking. I think your blog is beautiful and simple and I feel like I get a sense of why it’s important not to make the information very easily accessible. My impression is that a reader familiarizes themselves with your blog the way they would another person….gently. Peeking around for something of interest and absorbing respectfully. This is your house. It’s a welcoming one, but I have the impression that you don’t put up with rudeness and I like that.

My first impulse was to comment but I saw that that wasn’t an option. On the one hand, it sounds like you’ve been on the butt end of enough misunderstanding that allowing comments from uninformed or willfully ignorant random strangers is a recipe for further hurt and separation. On the other hand, shutting out the bad shuts out the good too.

It’s not my place to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do, but I’d love to see you open up some posts to comments in the future. People like to participate and it could help attract (and keep) more readership.

As for the content: SO interesting. I love your perspective. The anonymity makes it feel more honest to me. I grew up LDS (but left a little while back), so I grew up needing to have a somewhat different view of what marriage and relationships were supposed to look like. I have a cousin who is in a long-term polyamorous relationship, but I get the feeling that talking openly about it in a public forum doesn’t feel like an option for him. I’m glad you’re talking about it. The harder it is to talk about the more important it is to talk about 🙂

Sorry if this is really ranty…I just really enjoyed what I read and had a lot of thoughts about it. Though I couldn’t relate to the specifics, thematically, it hits really close to home.

    1. Hi, I really like your header image and your customized facebook and twitter links. If I was asked to name one change that would make me like your blog more, it would be to reduce the number of moving images. I find the one on top of your newest post as well as the featured ones from your top posts distracting instead of helping – I am sure your article would convey the same message without a moving image.

    1. A healthy chocolate and maple syrup cake? Is there such a thing? 😉 I’m not into either cooking or baking, but I pursued your recipe with utmost pleasure. This particular post and your blog in general is very nice on the eye; and your cake photos look very professional!

  5. Thank you Daily Post for all your help and advice over the past year. If it wasn’t for your prompts and challenges I’m sure I would have given up long ago.

  6. Hi! I recently started a travel blog and would love some feedback on my posts! I feel as if they need to be more engaging and attractive to my audience. How can I improve and/or as a reader, what do you prefer to read about. Should I write more posts on “preparing to travel?” Also, what can I do to make sure my site isn’t plain and boring?! Hoping to hear from you all!

    1. I really like the way the instagram widget looks with the larger picture at the top – did this come with the theme? Beautiful pictures 🙂 I don’t think your site is boring! But perhaps the font is a little small in the posts on the front page.. for me anyway. You could also try a colourful header if you feel like you’re missing out on colour – anyway really interesting posts 🙂

      1. I need to fix the font and color! THe instagram pictures are a result of a widget I use. I’ll find out the name and get back to you 🙂

    2. Really enjoyed looking through your blog, and look forward to reading new posts!
I think your content is perfect, you balance chatty and informative very well and post some absolutely stunning photos. The only thing I would say is that the font/colour of the links to your ‘About’ page and so on, are a little faint. Though that might just be my crappy laptop…
Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing, it’s brilliant!

      1. Hi, I’m not sure I do. I enabled the JetPack version once and didn’t like the way it looked. I’ll fix it because that was a selfish and dumb mistake on my half. Thanks for letting me know!

    3. I like to travel, too, and travelled a moderate amount in my youth, also. Just remember to reflect on the perspectives of locals compared to your readers, and engage all the senses.
And give your boyfriend a name, it’s dull and disconnecting to keep reading ‘my boyfriend’, and you have the opportunity to have fun with naming him.

    1. The blog is very clean looking and easy to read. Personally I prefer the posts in the style of ‘We Are Not A Cult’ as I found it a very engaging read. Not that I didn’t like all the posts, but that was the one that engaged me the most 🙂

    1. Hi I am new too (check out my blog https://yearandahalf.wordpress.com/ ) woo for us! I would suggest maybe expanding your About page a bit to explain why you want to make the blog – just so people feel more connected to you 🙂 Also (though this is my personal preference) add ‘read more’ links into your posts so when someone scrolls down your page it is just masses of texts,
      Apart from that, good luck!!

    1. Inspiring post! Your post was extremely thorough and I enjoyed how you addressed many sides of the feminist movement.

I sometimes write about this topic too! A while ago I contemplated the role of domesticity in my life as a 20 year old feminist:

      1. Thank you! That’s amazing your grandmother was a suffragist. I think feminism is so important, and it shouldn’t be taken for granted.

I look forward to reading your post. Thanks for commenting and following! 🙂

      2. I have been tinkering with the post for WAY too long. She was actually at the FIRST suffrage convention AND the Victory Convention in 1920– one of only 2 delegates to live to see the 19th amendment ratified. I need to hurry up and LET go of it. She was SO amazing. I’m excited to share her with the world!!!

    2. Hiya fellow feminist. ((: this post was lovely. The list of reasons of why you need feminism was particularly strong because it was personal, and writing about personal things is a feat of strength.

  7. Hello all! I’ve just started posting, but I’m not so sure I should keep going. I’ve blogged before, but gave up after a week because either no one would check it out or I didn’t get feedback. I know it was only a week, and blogs need time to grow, but I was impatient. Please let me know your thoughts!

      Don’t give up!

    3. I am very new to this whole blogging thing, but my philosophy is that if you want love you have to be willing to give love! Keep giving feedback to people surrounding you and you’ll be blown away with how many people will want to return the favor. Don’t give up you have a very solid theme and niche!

  8. I have been blogging for about a year and a half now and am still happy doing it. My recent blog is actually a four part series plus introduction based around a theme of ‘My Four Seasons’. Altogether it is the most I have written since graduating college and I was looking for feedback about how to promote a project as lengthy as this. I published them one a day, for 5 days, but the length of them has kept some people away from reading them I think, rather than when I do individual blogs. If I do this type of series again, should I space them out more? One a week? One a month? Any help appreciated-

  10. Hey Everyone!

If you’re into health/fitness, we’d love some feedback on the recent content we’ve been posting on our blog. Even though we’re a local business, we think our blog should have a global reach!

    https://optsc.wordpress.com/

    We’d especially love feedback on:

STYLE: Too casual? Not authoritative enough? Pushing the clinics too much?

CALL TO ACTION: We hardly ever get comments on our pieces, how to change that?!

    Thnaks!

    1. To get responses, I recommend asking questions at the end of each post. I read some of the posts and didn’t feel like comments were particularly warranted.

    1. Great blog and style enjoyed browsing round the site 🙂 I’d love some advice – I am only just starting out ! http://yearandahalf.wordpress.com .. One thing, the comments section is called ‘Did you want to say something?’ which sounds slightly threatening 😛 just my opinion of course!

      1. Hi Olivia and thanks for the feedback!
I love your writing style! It’s quirky and clever. I suppose your audience would be people in a similar situation as you. Perhaps you can focus on that. It’s important to define your blog’s purpose and stick to that purpose. Imagine you are someone else reading your blog. How can your audience learn through your experiences in uni? Would it be helpful to you? Would you use it as a resource in the future?

I hope this was helpful! Keep up the great work!

      1. Great purpose! Everybody loves to save money 🙂
I think my biggest suggestion to you would be to use the space you have in your blog wisely. Take advantage of pingbacks (like creating a link) instead of writing out the entire website domain. Adding a few widgets to your sidebars can really spruce up the appearance (like an archive of your blogs or most popular). An easy to find subscription widget could be helpful. You could even use websites like polyvore.com to put together cute boards with money-saving products.

        Hope this was helpful!!

    2. I really like the simplicity of your blog, everything looks clean and words kept at a minimum. Just how it should be for a fashion blog like yours. Just one thing, I’m sure I’m a complete dumb nut but I can’t find a like or follow button…only subscribe by email

      1. Thanks Power of Mum, I must have had the “like” option deactivated. It should be working now. However my “follow” button doesn’t seem to be showing even though I’ve got it activated. Thanks for the heads up!

I tried checking out your blog and I was taken to a site that isn’t working at the moment. I found another (www.powerofmum.wordpress.com). Is this yours?

      4. ohhh! Thanks I’ve seen you’ve followed my blog.

Yours blog is also quite clean and intuitive. Your titles are to the point and photos are very relevant. It’s perfect especially for first time mommies. I’ll recommend your blog to my sister!

I think the only thing I would recommend is perhaps having an About Me page. That’s the first place I go to when I come across a new blog. I wanna know what you’re all about. Good luck and keep up the great work!

  11. Hi everyone! I just recently started blogging but hope to continue. My blog is mostly composed of book reviews so far, but I recently posted a post about music, specifically K-pop.

I would appreciate it greatly if you guys could give me feedback or any constructive criticism. I would also be thankful to hear your opinion on the subject as well. Thank you so much! Happy blogging! 🙂
