Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. Hey everyone! I’m new to WordPress and I’d love some feedback on my first post? It’s a DIY tutorial on a floral headband.

I’d be sooo thankful if someone wanted to take a look?

  2. I know that I just commented a link a while ago looking for feedback on my posts, but I’ll take it on anything at this point. I really hope I can make some friends here. I have Cerebral Palsy but was mainstreamed growing up, I mostly blog about that as well as my life and anything I’m loving at the time.

    1. I hate to say it, but your blog is very negative. I see that it is supposed to be humorous, but at times it’s a little insulting. Also, you have some grammatical mistakes (wrong form of too). However, I feel that a lot of teachers might relate to this after their long hours of work. Maybe add some positive content in posts that are otherwise negative. This will keep the target audience engaged and encouraged.

  3. I’m about to be four posts into my new blog. I received the feedback from a non-blogger that my layout looks like an old myspace page. I would love some suggestions. If I decided to re-theme, do I have to start over completely?

    1. I don’t think it is bad at all! If you do decide to go for a new theme, you don’t have to start from zero of course. Your posts and other pages are kept intact and may only require a little bit of design detail work.

Also I really liked your “Breaking The Jars” post! 🙂

      1. Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you like the theme since it took me a little while to choose one I really liked. Being a daydreamer is such a big part of my personality that I couldn’t resist including it in my title 🙂

    1. I absolutely loved the short story! Please keep on posting regularly. The only improvement I would suggest is maybe changing your theme. the green can be a little distracting when reading, and maybe think of adding a title to the top of the page 🙂

    1. I really love your blog! I’m literally obsessed with the image you chose, it’s stunning and goes so well with your blog. My only comment is to keep the length of posts a smidge more consistent. People might come back to see your quick post, then see it’s a long one and leave. Or they might be expecting a long story and just get a tidbit and might be dissapointed. Or you could schedule (I’m not sure if you have a schedule, I didn’t see) stories one day and short articles one other day, something like that?

      1. It means a lot that you read my blog! I’m glad you liked it! I will keep the length of my posts in mind now, thank you so much!

    1. This is so cool! I love this idea! Overall, I think you’re doing a great job. I would recommend reaching out to people who use skulls in their art and people who wear skulls (like people who you see on insta, etc.) and tell them about your blog. I’m sure they have no idea the greater meaning and tradition of the skulls.

  4. Hey everyone. So I keep getting spam comments written in Chinese. And it takes ages to go through and permanently delete them. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to block comments from different languages so I only get languages I understand? Or if someone could point me to where I might find this information?

      1. If I put some Chinese characters (I’ve been getting a lot of Chinese spam and I don’t read Chinese) into my comment blacklist, it won’t translate them and block those words in English as well will it?

    1. Great start to your blog! Your theme works really well (I may be biased as I use the same theme haha) and you write really well. I think your blog will be a success 🙂

  6. Still totally new and this and developing my blog look as well. And I am looking for some feedback about links. I have been interlinking some of my posts and they always show up in a rust color (which I like) but I am wondering, do you think they should be made bold so they are more obvious? The font is pretty thin.

Also, I was told that sometimes my links exit my blog (meaning clicking the link will take over that tab.) Is there a way to do an interarticle link that opens in a new window. I know when I do outside links to use the link tool and select blank target, but when it comes to creating a link in a post, I usually just type it up in code. Is that a mistake? Or do I need to add something to it to get it to open a new tab? Thanks for the opinions and coding advice.

Here is today’s post, you will be able to see what the llinks currently look like as well as if I embolden them (as shown in the footnote). Thank you much!

    1. Whenever you add a new link via the “Link” button in the Text or Visual Editor (rather than typing the code directly), the pop-up where you enter the URL will also have a box – “Open links in new window/tab.” Checking it will make sure that clicking on a link will open a new tab in your readers’ browsers.

    1. Hey I just checked out your blog. You have some great posts and your pictures are really good. I particularly liked your About Me page. I would suggest making the photos in your blog posts larger as they are great and would give your blog a more visual look 🙂

    1. Hi, I am not sure I am the right person to comment, I mean that I am not so “skilled”…anyway, from what I heard and what I learned so much, I have only 1 suggestion: shorten posts; very long post have less chance to be read, unless you are a 5,000,000 followers blogger 😀 Also, I think that you may avoid putting to many pictures, try to select them before posting, otherwise slow-connection reader will be affected! A part from these suggestions, good start!
