Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. thanks for sharing that and well done, you. i think it’s great that you said something because living with the never knowing is the best way to not move on – making the move and knowing [albeit not the answer you wanted] and then writing this post feels like a great start to moving on – and just reminding yourself when you see him post and all that other stuff you mentioned, what his response was BEFORE letting it get to you and start the process all over again – but maybe a short break from the space he inhabits to get focused and distracted on other things for a bit might be a helpful healer.

and bacon. if you’re not a vegetarian or vegan or something. there is always bacon.

oh and i think you may have meant “way” and not “say” here at the end :I guess it is also a say to move on.

but ja, great post and well done again – you gave it the chance to be yes. One day it will be.

      1. Hi Brett,

Thank you for the time in reading my entry and also replying. This is truly what I needed to hear. I have decided to cut back from that site for a while because there is still some unspeakable hurt “seeing” him there. The funny thing is now that he knows what I feel about him his flirtings with other females doubled which is really frustrating for me! Haha! He told me not to avoid him though but goodness he is so confusing.

Oh bacon! But Im not a huge fan of it to be honest :p Maybe Ill buy ice cream.

And yes, a “way” to move on is what I meant.

True, I let it all out there and thought I had a fighting chance. But Im glad I did this. 🙂 And thanks again this is so appreciated.

PS I love your blog. It has so much wisdom.

      2. Thanks so much Nina. It feels painful when someone doesn’t return your feelings but better that you know early and all the more exciting when you find someone that does [i got married aged 35 so i know a little bit about this – it is so much worth the wait! Altho maybe not at the time]

    1. I Love the concept of a countryside blog. I think that this is a definite draw card to separate you from the rest.
Remember that simplicity is profound. Perhaps you should write as if you are telling the story to a friend. It’s great that you are very descriptive in your posts, but sometimes readers just want to know the story without the fluff.
Perhaps you should add a category widget to separate the various topics. Also, love your header image!
      Hope this helps.

      1. Hi Robyn

Thank you for your feedback! I did not understand about the story and category bit. There is a menu on the homepage for easy navigation on my blog. Are you talking about poetry or articles? I am not clear?

      2. Hi Kavita, I am so sorry. This comment wasn’t meant for your blog at all. I’d been typing outside of the commentary field (to sassyandsaddles.com) and must have pasted it in the wrong field.

Your blog is beautiful, I feel like I should be having a glass of wine while reading it.

        Apologies again.

Great stuff – i love your blog title/signoff – gives great continuity [small typo with beginning at the top but maybe that is intentional as a shout out to Americaneses spelling everything their own way?] also the fact that most of your posts are quite short and it’s really just a snapshot into your day or life or moment – has a great feel to it.

  1. I haven’t written anything in a while and really want some feedback on my first fast-breaking post: https://threelaughingcrows.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/i-forgot-about-having-to-title-everything/

I am trying a different approach (whose details I don’t want to reveal) and would like to know what people’s emotional reactions are as well as what the “after taste” is like. The sensations your left with once you have finished reading.

Any feedback not within these peramters is welcome as well.
    Thanks.

    P.S.
    Wonderful idea this is.

    1. I really like how short and simple this post is. It’s also super interesting so I’m really impressed with how much humor, sarcasm and intrigue you packed into so few words. It’s minimalist. In terms of sensations I’m left with…I guess I’m just stuck here envisioning a girl named Penelope..redheaded with freckles and braces. Weird I named her Penelope, is that weird?

    2. i like it – a very unique and playful run on style – small things i would change but the last line with the freckles is such a powerful one… definitely something here worth experimenting more with…

  2. Hi everyone,

I’ve been messing with my theme and the placement of my widgets, but I just don’t think it really looks right. I’ve also made a new post after a few weeks away.

Any feedback regarding the layout or content would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    1. Hi! I just looked over your blog and I have some thoughts. I think the blog portion of your site is really strong and organized. The one thing I think that could be improved is your photography portfolio. Have you tried putting the pictures into a gallery? I think it would be much more organized and easy to view (there are tons of different options too for formatting). One other suggestion would be to perhaps add pictures to your blog posts, if that seems relevant to you. Pictures keep people interested & also draws the eye in to see what the posts are about. Keep it up though, it’s a blog I’m interested in definitely. 🙂 xoxo, Sam. If you have a chance, try and check out our blog as well, we’d love any advice or comments!

    1. Hi Faye, i love your blog cover pic – stunning!

Wow, deep post and really captures the heart of what you are trying to convey, albeit quite a sad or negative lonely space. Really draws people in and helps bring understanding [and maybe through that you are no longer alone?]

the one word that stood out to me was ‘happy’ which on one hand fits because it is the opposite of what is being created but i was also wondering if there was a word that suggested similar meaning but sounded a little more diabolical and descriptive of ‘the thing’ – something like ‘deeply satisfied’ or ‘fulfilled’ – a word or phrase that somehow even more shows the evil and messedupness of this creature that is messing with you? Just a thought

And also don’t understand this sentence – is “fin” a typo or am i missing something? “I was truly gone fin that second for at night we die”

But thank you so much for sharing – you definitely have a way with words…

    1. I decided to check out your blog, as it seemed a trifle unfair that whilst you were commenting on other peoples, they were not reciprocating. And it did say, at the start, to leave a few comments.

Anyway, as I am an atheist you might well understand my problem with god, although nowhere as immediate as the video not loading.

That being said, perhaps someone who is possessed by faith might be better able to judge the content. However, the content was pleasingly laid out

      1. Thanks for stopping by. Will check why the video is not loading, whoops. I think even for an atheist this demonstration might be an interesting view to observe. All the best, love brett fish

Any criticism on how we present our material? While we are growing our content we’re still figuring out how we want to show pictures, format posts, etc.

Any comments are appreciated & I will definitely take a look at your blog as well.

  5. Hello all!

I’ve just started a blog about countryside life and gossip, opinion and conversations over the dinner table. It struck me that life and fun does not end when you move out of the big cities.

I would love some feedback on it and I’d love to read your blogs too.

Have a wonderful week fellow bloggers!

Thanks for any help and comments,

    1. Hello York and Fizz,

I have just visited your blog.
I will try to remember the key elements about setting up a blog, that I learned during the blogging 101 course, and comment on that.

The theme you chose is nice and clean, easy to read on computer and mobile version. I just tested.

The header image is appropriate to life in the country side, but I would suggest to personalize it even more by using a photo from where you live now. It’s going to add more personality to it as more bloggers use your theme and also don’t change this photo.

The font is good and size is readability too.

The post size is also good. Not too short nor too big. They tell us that around 600 words max helps. But of course it depends on your subject and what your followers like. You will learn that while writing and getting feedback.

Talking about the purpose of the blog…yes, you are spot on. I read 3 posts and they come across just as you intend to. Besides, your writing style is light, funny, and smart. I got interested to read more.

On another note, you may want to add some widgets of the sidebar. For example, a follow my blog one? You can check all options available on your dashboard.

If I think of something else I will let you know. I will follow you.

      Best of luck.

  7. Hello fellow bloggers,

I’ve been blogging here since September 2014, but have never visited the community Pool before. I wrote a post about the Grammar Police who seems to be bothering some bloggers.
I would appreciate if you could read my post and let me have your thoughts or share your experience on the same.
If you still have time, please let me know your impressions about my blog. I write about my views and reflections on events that I care about, being it personal or world events. And I post photography too.
    Thanks.

  9. HI there my blog is thoughtsoutloud.me I have a brand new post and a few recen-ish posts. I would just like some feedback on the overall topics and writing style. My blog doesn’t necessarily have a specific posting day which makes it hard for me to keep up, I have it linked to my Facebook to try and get more feedback but I come up dry :/

I also have a brand new blog dynamicness.com that I just started so there’s not much content yet but I would love general feedback on the overall idea of the blog I have laid forth so far.

Thank you so so much and I will be back here a little later today to read through comments and help others!

  10. Hey Amig@s,

I started this just for family and friends, but now that I have a wider audience I figured I should get some feedback from other writers who don’t understand all my eccentricities. I write a combination of adventures I tend to stumble into (first link) and cultural observations (second link). Please have a look over one of them and tell me what you think!

    1. I think it depends by site as well as on your own blog and what you normally publish there.

In general, though, I think you should do your due diligence and make sure the other sources you’re quoting don’t explicitly ask that you don’t use them (many sites have copyright notices and other ways of signaling their approach to sharing their work). Then there’s also the question of how much you’re “repurposing” — quoting a sentence from an article is fine in nearly all cases. Copying an entire one verbatim — not so much, especially if that’s what most of your posts are.

As Michelle mentioned above, when you do end up using content from elsewhere, be sure to give proper credit and link to it.

      1. Thanks so much Ben! I’ve used photos or a video and written my own content and maybe a quote from the original article, and will alwaysh ave a link back to the original source. But you’re absolutely right that I should take the time and look for any copyright notices or explicit warnings.

All very helpful in reinforcing best practices. Thanks again!
