Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

      1. Hi Cavan, I really like the layout for your blog and think that you have provided a lot of great content. I also love to read and will make sure to follow your blog to read your reviews. Keep up the good work!

      2. Hey loved the blog. The quote at the start immediately draws attention and the review has a good mix of story and author. Great blog, maybe add more visuals like the cover of the book to brighten up the page

      3. Hi Cavan! Long story short, I’m beginning to read, so I’m now following you 😉 Anyway, about the blog; it’s nice and simple, and has a good layout. I think it will serve reviews of books nicely, but as mentioned; an image or maybe two in good quality would do great. Especially concerning the banner of the first review isn’t fitting very well. If you can’t find a better fit, it’s fairly easy to make one of your own (even in MS Paint). 🙂

      4. Thank you for the feedback. 🙂 I encourage you to keep coming back!

I think the sidebar works well on Cavan Reads. 🙂 I would suggest adding the widget that lists your top posts and pages, as a way of showing readers what’s most popular on your blog.

In regards to A Day In The Life, I couldn’t find any posts, but I did see the sidebar and it looked good. I’d add the widget that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to follow you via email. You added that widget on Cavan Reads, and it’s just a way to allow for more followers. 🙂

I love books (although I’m not a fan of horror), so I’m following. 🙂

Thanks for the feedback! I encourage you to keep coming back!

I feel like your blog could use a more colorful theme, but that’s just my opinion. If you feel your current theme works for what you’re blogging about, keep it. 🙂 Gotta say, I like your weekly workouts. I may have to adopt some of those workouts. 😛 I’m now following! 🙂

      1. Thanks. I like to bring to light what’s happening in the Middle East, because a lot of people don’t know about that stuff. The stuff I blog about doesn’t seem to make it to the national media. I encourage you to keep coming back to my blog!

I would suggest adding the widget that allows other people who aren’t on WordPress to follow you via email, in an effort to allow for more followers. 🙂
Also, I would make a more detailed About page. (Not that I can say much, mine is a continual work in progress. But if there’s one kind of feedback I keep getting, it’s readers wanting me to create a detailed About page.) Good luck with your blog! God bless!

I enjoyed your post about terrorism in Pakistan. I conducted a research paper on terrorism, and I learned that no matter how many terrorist attacks the West has, the Middle East and Asia (and Africa) endure so much more. While this wasn’t a shock, it was a slap in the face that we fear terrorism here in the West, but for those in the East, it’s a rather common event, unfortunately. I like the points you made on eradicating terrorism, especially by installing democracy.

I enjoyed your images. 🙂 I feel like your blog could use a more colorful theme, based on what your blog is about. Also, I would suggest exploring some widgets – when used properly, they can really add to a blog. For example, there’s a widget that lists your top posts and pages, one that lists your most recent posts (and another for comments), and another one that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to still follow you via email. 🙂
If you don’t know how to add widgets, let me know and I’ll tell you. 🙂 Good luck with your blog!

I’m particularly fond of your more thought-provoking posts like “Let’s Go.” Sometimes I wish that there was a few more images to break up some of the longer posts, such as on your “Success” post, but that would be my only thing (and it’s something that I struggle with as well). 1. Oh, a nice theme! And a lovely dump you have there… I was wondering though if you might not want to try a photography theme that would show your beautiful pictures larger and more prominent…? I like your theme but I feel it might not do your photos justice.

    2. you have lovely pictures Joe! The theme is really nice and minimal. I’d have one suggestion. Photo galleries are nice, I use them too, but some images are just so good that it would be nice for them to be stand alone. Also if I were you I’d pick a theme for each photo dump so as to be more cohesive (e.g. flowers, park and so on).

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Well it would be more SEO friendly to have a title other than Photo Dump. Oh and I didn’t mean to have only one photo posts, I meant that you can place some photos on your posts one under the other rather than in a gallery (which makes up the collage)

    5. “A picture speaks a thousand words”. I am surprised no one said this in the comments yet. Your pictures tell a story and are beautiful to look at, so I subscribed. I do think however that putting them up in the way you do, all fused together in a large block, does take away a little from the impact they would have if they were individually framed. I personally would also like a bit more information about each picture, what was the thought you had when you took it, in other words what was it that inspired you to push the camera button at that moment, and where in the world it was taken. A few words or short sentence can do the trick. This can help shift the viewers focus from their personal perception to a wider one that takes them on a bit more of a journey and add a “thousand” more. Maybe post less more often?

It allows for other readers to avoid the same mistakes and also helps you through the process. Good luck with the novel!

    1. Hi Aaron,
I like that you touch such a serious issue in your latest post – as travel bloggers, we always tend to be a bit on the lighthearted side and I know it is challenging to treat political topics in the framework of a travel blog. I think you did that very well!
For your blog in general, I think there are some choices in design that people may have differing opinions on – having the main content all on the left and “wasting” so much space for the orange bar on the right is one of them – but I know that orange fits your blog title and should be part of your design. I would probably have tried to center the main body in front of the orange background.
I am not sure if I understand the message of the header image on your blog (the one with the beach) – it looks more like from a catalog for beach holidays and I am not sure if this is really the best fit for your content.
But again, very well done on the post today!

    2. Hey Aaron, is it just one person or a community of “orange travelers”? I wish there was a picture of the actual traveler. If you want to stay anon, you could put up a picture of you wearing something orange but not showing your face.

Your theme matches well with the title of your blog, but it would be cool to see more pictures of all the places you’ve visited. Maybe think about changing to layout to be more picture-based? Hope this helps!

    3. I liked your post. It takes a deft hand to combine your politics with something so seemingly light-hearted as a travel blog. Your writing has a lot of potential and there’s a lot of good stuff in there. (I read ‘Normal People’.) You might be able to up the emotional impact by editing down to make the writing more concise and direct. There were a few places where two or three sentences could be restructured into one, punchier sentence.

It’s just a suggestion. If it helps–great. If not, ignore it.

    2. I have to admit–the page numbers confused me.

The read more tag is not a problem. (Most blog readers know to click on it.) But after hitting the read more tag, I thought that was the end of the story. Which means I thought the Pastry Chef and The Business Man ended in a very odd place.

It took going back to your site two more times before I ever even noticed the page numbers at the bottom and went, “Ooooh–that’s what she means.” Now I can read the rest of the story.

Have you considered calling them chapters, instead–or parts?

You might consider some kind of background image, like people sitting at a French cafe, to add more “oomph.” The post was probably too long for most readers. You could break it into sections by ending each part with a (rhetorical) question that might engage your readers.

    2. I love the look of your site, especially the curving lines to the left. I would include an “about me” section. I enjoyed the pessimist piece you wrote. It might help if you had categories or some kind of organization of your posts, especially as you increase in number! Keep writing!

      1. Thank you for reading and the positive response, yes the categories and menus to help organize my blog are definitely something I’ll be getting in place soon!

    1. The overall theme is cool, I especially love the header image. I have two suggestions:

      – I’d put a little less focus on the site widgets. The way you arranged them is good, but they take up half your site. In my opinion it would be wise to give your actual posts a little more physical space to guide the eye towards them.

      – I personally find your chosen background image really nice and fitting to the theme, but it’s a tad too distracting for me. Maybe experiment with the opacity settings to tone it down a little bit?

      1. Thanks for your feedback! I’ll definitely look at changing the things you’ve mentioned, I hadn’t thought of the background as distracting but now you’ve mentioned it I can definitely see how it can be! Tuning it down a bit will definitely help, thanks a lot 🙂

    2. You really did an amazing job on personalizing your page! I especially like how the widgets merge with the rest to create less of a this-is-a-box-and-there-is-a-widget-inside feel, and it’s also a great idea to “sign” your posts. I agree with Philipp Ulrich that it might be a good idea to reduce the contrast of the background image a little.

    1. Hello Ms. Berryduchess,

I love the personalized theme of your blog. The layout and colors match your writing style and tone perfectly. I also love your pictures and quotes. Not much concrit from me! Keep doing you.

    1. I love the clean look of your blog! I think the first thing I noticed was that you don’t have social media buttons at the top for people to connect with you. I have a website designer who is good, if you’re interested. She’s helping me with a new theme right now. I also have a graphic designer who just did a new logo…

      1. I definitely need help. I caught the social media issues, but I’m using a free layout and don’t know much about how to update WP layouts, themes, etc.

    2. The theme is alright, but the site could use a bit more contrast in the color scheme. I’d suggest starting by making the headlines a good bit darker to make them stand out more from the rest.

Also, that cat picture is hilarious!

    3. I’d play around with some of the customisations on WP first before getting someone to design your website — make sure you have a clear idea as to what your site needs and what you want. As a new blogger you’ll probably end up experimenting with different styles of post so you can try out different ways of presenting your blog to know what works and suits your style of content — what might look good at first isn’t necessarily going to be the best thing for helping readers navigate, or give you the flexibility to add pages and social media feeds etc.

    4. I enjoyed your post (and the hilarious cats). Is there a reason you didn’t put all of the post on a single page? The theme looks a bit monotone for such lively writing. Can you add some background color or images? I have found that WordPress publishes numerous posts on improving your blog. Other bloggers out there also post great tips. I wouldn’t pay anyone until you have tried free resources first. Keep blogging. You are worth reading!

    1. Hi. I took a look. Youve got quite a range of subjects there. As for suggestions I would recommend creating an About Me page so potential readers have a chance to get to know you and see why they should follow you. Hope this helps
