That’s a Wrap: A Snapshot of November’s Photo 101 Course

As I’d mentioned in the final Photography 101 post, congratulations again to participants in our first-ever Blogging U. course dedicated to photoblogging. November proved to be a fun, busy month of picture-taking and blog posting, and we hope you enjoyed meeting other bloggers in the Commons and pushing yourself to meet your daily publishing goals.

Throughout November, we were excited to see a wide range of participants — from brand-new bloggers to veteran photographers — connect, teach, and learn from one another. We also enjoyed seeing different interpretations of the daily themes, from your locations all over the world.

We plan to run this course again, as well as new 201-level courses focused on different elements of photography. Throughout the month, we noted your feedback on the assortment of themes and tips, as well as the course pacing and format. We’ll keep this is mind as we develop future photoblogging courses, though it’s worth noting that various restrictions — from your location to lack of time — pushed you to approach themes in unexpected, inventive ways. Ultimately, we want to challenge you!

If you weren’t able to participate on some days, or want to revisit any of the themes, you can access the entire list of themes on the Photo 101: A Photo a Day course page. In the meantime, while The Daily Post staff cooks up something new, what can you do post-course to keep that Photo 101 momentum? Here are some ideas:

Organize and display your Photography 101 posts on your blog: If you have a Photo 101 category, add this category page to your custom menu. (If you don’t already have a Photo 101 category, create one in your dashboard, and then go through your Photo 101 posts and add your newly created category to each of them.) You can also publish a new page dedicated to your Photography 101 content and organize it however you’d like; for example, Doug Warren created a calendar with links to his submissions.

Hone your gallery-making skills:  We’re especially happy to see different types of galleries in your wrap-up posts: a tiled gallery at Angle and Views, the square tiles in Crisisalive‘s “It’s a Wrap Up,” a slideshow at Lucile de Godoy’s blog, and the circles option at Life in Frame and The Changing Palette. We hope the course has pushed you to experiment more with different gallery options.

Use your images in creative ways: You can do so much more than simply display photos in blog posts. After a month of daily assignments, you have many images to work with! Flip through your horizontal and landscape-oriented shots for possible custom header images. Or, use one of your images as the background for a custom image widget. You might find multiple uses for that one favorite photograph you took in November.

Join another photography challenge: Search our event listings for photo-related blogging events and challenges hosted by bloggers in the community. You can browse event listings in the Photography & Visual Arts section and use the “Frequency” dropdown menu to filter the results.

Fab course, I enjoyed being challenged every day, it really helped develop my blog within an area I hadn’t considered before, and it was lovely to see a wider array of work I might not have discovered otherwise. The challenges were also much easier to keep up with than on the other wordpress courses I’ve done!

  5. Wonderful workshop! Great wrap-up post. I’m glad you liked my Photography 101 calendar. This course really sparked my interest in photography. It was a great start, but I need to learn much more, explore techniques, practice my photography, participate in photo challenges, and post more photos on my blog. Looking forward to more photo courses next year.

  8. I never ever considered myself a ‘visual person’. On my blog, I wrote and wrote, never even including a picture. Participating in photography 101 was an amazing experience. Suddenly, I could make sense of focus, foreground, point of view, contrast…
    I had a lot of fun and now people in my neighbourhood are getting used to me clicking away at all times and places. Thank you to WordPress!

  12. It was a very nice experience to be part of this course and I am looking forward to 201. I love taking pictures even though I do it for fun but learning new tips every day made it even better. Thanks for challenging us every day!

  20. This course definitely rocked my world. So much for still contemplating and so pressed with little time and changing light. Made me take account of my place as a hobbyist photographer.

  21. this was a lot of fun. It was exciting to meet new people but even more to see “friends” contributing. I love seeing all the different takes on the themes and how they applied the tips; I look forward to 201.

  22. It was huge fun and as I was away travelling at the beginning of the course I was unable to sign up for it, but I used the themes to summarise my weeks away which worked really well. So well I shall continue to do similar for the rest of my trip. I look forward to new challenges next year. Thanks WP team 🙂

    Thank you very much for the course, though i did not participate in it right from the beginning. It helped me a lot and i would like to know more about photography. I will look out for these in future here and also can you kindly inform when is Photography 201??

    PS: I also want to know how to create a gallery of images on wordpress, if someone can give this valuable tip.

  29. My blog is about my photography course and all the work i’ve done/doing i put on there, even images! But none of my images are as good as some on here.But i am still studying, so hopefully they will be good enough in good time! ❤
