To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    9. Hello Poornima, I really enjoyed reading some of your posts. You have a writing style that borders on the poetic, which makes you very readable. You seem to be able to take the commonplace and elevate it to a higher plane of thought. Your most recent about “Mr Right” is a great example – I love the way you juxtapose what you dream of with what the reality might be, but simultaneously still reach for the best partner, lover, husband who might be out there waiting for you. I can tell you from experience that much of what you write is true, but a marriage is a partnership and can only be strong and survive if it works like that but has love at it’s very core. I know I’ve had that for 25 years – yes, some bumps and low places along the way, but sticking together through thick and thin. Back to your blog, I love the one about MSD – as an Englishman I love cricket and while we like beating India, MSD is one of my sporting heroes. I was that 11 year old once, except I wanted to be Geoff Boycott, so that blog evokes memories as well as very poetically making the point that no-one should ever shatter the pursuit of a dream by someone else – I am sure MSD dreamt of playing for India one day – and he did! Congratulations on a lovey blog.

      Patriarchy got my attention. In fact I liked it and spent a little time with it. The use of “circumcised” was effective on several levels.

      If I may offer a thought, the first line could perhaps be more effective in pairing with the last with a less explicitly connected verb “cut”, e.g. “bind up and shrink” I don’t offer that as a substitute but a quick example of what I suggest. Since I can’t steal your excellent idea I don’t want to wrestle with it to find exactly my phrase.

    I just added a new header image to my blog and would love some feedback. I wanted the header itself to be funny (since it’s a cartoon blog.) Does it work? Or is it too busy and/or confusing? Any and all suggestions on how to improve the site are most welcome.

    1. I really like your cartoons – both art and captions. The header is clever. I personally don’t love the flourescent green of the lettering – but that is just a personal dislike of that colour. Have you experimented with different colours? Is that even possible? (Note, I’m no visual artist!)

I’m not at all married to the green, in fact I was trying a lot of different color combinations for the lettering vs the backdrop and just got to the point where my eyes were crossing and said ‘just put the stupid thing up’. I can change it pretty easily. Any suggestions? Are there any site where you thing the color combinations really work well?

      2. Now, I’m not good at working out what colour works – but I like the colours used in the halloween cartoon. But then you would know better than me what the trend is with colours in cartooning. I was thinking ‘red’ but then figured that would look like blood!!

      3. I like your header – I’ve just seen it now and saw it had yellow lettering, which looked good.
        I wonder – is there a way to rotate headers? I like the scene with the dog, but parts of the text are blocked out, and I feel like I’m missing something…maybe if there were alternating headers, I’d be more comfortable with that.

    8. Hi Bor Bor, I love your cartoons! They’re smart and nicely done. I think the only bit of feedback I’d offer would be to maybe create your own lettering for the blog title, but that’s totally a matter of personal taste. But seriously, you had me laughing out loud!

      1. That’s a great suggestion. I will definitely give it a try, though it may take me a while–I am not gifted in the graphic arts department. Though you are. Your beach illustration has a lot going for it, and is very graphic. I admire styles that I stink at.

      2. I don’t find hand lettering easy either, to be perfectly honest. I find it can be helpful to use handwritten fonts designed by others. WeGraphics is a good source for not-so run of the mill ones. But if you have the time to do the lettering yourself, I think it would be great. By the way, the yellow is much better than the green, in my opinion!

    9. After trying on your suggestions (in multiple iterations), I’ve put up a new (and hopefully improved) header. This one has yellow lettering with a bluish-grey backdrop. If any of you have a spare minute to check it out, please let me know if it’s less retina-seering than the last version.

      As per Kena’s great suggestion, I’ll attempt some hand-lettering this weekend (or next) but will stick to the yellow text color, unless you guys give it a thumbs down.

        I just went to your blog (I believe in reciprocity) and I LOVED the your ‘My Zodiac: The Unknown’ post. It is me. Your talking about me (and all this time I thought I was a Gemini.) But I can’t find where to post a comment. Seriously, this drives me nuts on so many sites. I am a WordPress newbie, so I’m not fluent in all the various theme layouts, but I want to comment (positive comments, I swear–I’m not the kind to ever go negative in public,) But I am continually thwarted by design elements that seem to delight in disguising the comment button.

        OK. Comment rant over. I loved the post. It’s so ‘me’, and I really hope that’s not pathetic.

    1. I have to admit, I skipped over your question a few times. Not knowing that ‘Masters of Sex’ is a TV series about Masters and Johnson (the research team that conducted the first scientific experiments into human sexuality), I was afraid the post might be about a … um.. different kind of TV show, probably a bizarre reality one, or something that I’d be embarrassed to read about.

      I’m glad to say, that is not what your post is about. I thought it was a very well written, honest critique of a TV drama that is supposed to be based on real people and real events. There are a handful of TV shows I like to watch, but searching for new good ones, when the old ones have run their course, takes more time than I’m willing to spend. Though I will probably never watch the show (especially given your take on season 2), based on the writing in your post, I would trust you to give me an accurate picture of what I could expect from any TV show/movie that I’m thinking about watching. As a reviewer/critiquer, you did a great job.

      My only recommendation is that, with titles like that one (see–I have difficult time typing it) add a few words to the question so that all of us who aren’t that familiar with current TV programming will know what to expect when we visit your blog.

      1. Beautiful post. Sometimes, one does need to step back and appreciate the beauty of a language that one is so busy using as a tool for communication. In a way, languages we know are like people we know. We don’t appreciate them often enough!
        I really like your layout too. I used to have your theme, but my long, rambling paragraphs didn’t make for easy reading and, of course, I blamed the theme. You make it very reader-friendly. Well done!

    7. I love this idea. I’ve already spent quite a while listening to some of the cover versions, especially like Super Trouper covered by Camera Obscura. I’ll be back for more. One thing I find a little tricky on the iPad is the navigation using the picture menu – am sure it’s fine on a PC or Mac though. Congratulations on a good idea for a blog. I’m following now!

    3. Really like the layout and images, really unique! That is the sort of thing I would like to do to my blog to give that ‘wow’ factor. The pictures of the moving water are fantastic! I know from using that technique myself in the past, it really can be difficult to get the lighting, aperture and f-stop correct!

      Liked your initial front page. I clicked to open a few of the selections. Your About Me page opens within each category and is a bit of a distraction from the poem or song selection. I would maybe move the About Me content to a tab category all by itself instead of having it embedded within each one as it is currently.

    5. Really beautiful photography. I like some of your poems. My favorite is Unfortunate, although the photo did not display. Is it the grilled window? I like your layout, although I was initially confused about which one I was clicking until I realised that the title popped up when you left your cursor over it long enough. Cool blog.       2. By gallery you mean the homepage? I think you have too many photos out and it would be nice if there were spaces in between. Also our eyes tend to glaze over if the images are all the same sizes because our eye needs something to focus on (according to photography class). Hope this helps.

    1. I had a read of the post about self-exploration. There is some good writing and thinking there. As it is reasonably long, I wonder if giving some headings to break it up – or ‘lands’ or ‘paths’ that sum up the different experiences of the journey – would help the reader to continue on that journey with you? Just an idea.

      2. Great. I’ll keep an eye out for it. One of the best tips I picked up from the Writing 101 course I did back in September here on WordPress, was to work on sentences that were different lengths – and paragraphs the same, I guess, so that they reader’s eye has some nice challenges and a varied rhythm develops in your writing. It has been fun to experiment with that. It’s another alternative to using headings etc.

      Your post was very relatable. Often, I find myself floundering about my emotions. I don’t know what I truly like, what my favourite colour is or what truly makes me happy. But I guess, it’s times like these that made self-exploration (no innuendo intended) exciting. The odyssey towards self-discovery is indeed a meaningful journey when our answers are disclosed.

      I would also add the word “should” to the list of verboten phraseology. It implies guilt and judgement which are not productive in the least. Choose active words “will, can, want, am going to, inspired to, must” etc.

        Including a few widgets to previous content would be helpful for readers. I’m using basic features and thus limited with color schemes, etc. but I do like the use of buttons and methods which simplify a page.

      I also moved from blogger to wordpress recently and have really struggled with the move. Any advice you have on how you brought your readers over with you would be greatly appreciated!

      In response to your Q however, I really like how clear the layout is. As Hayley says this really lets your content shine and I think the size of your pictures is good.

      However, I think you need to make more use of both the sidebar and the footer. You could add in a short about you section here, a search function or more social media widgets so that its easier to interact with the blog.

      1. Thanks for your feedback! My about me section can be found in the me u under “who is doing these dishes?!” I having some issues with the widgets on my pc, as in how to get them where i want them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        I didnt have much readership to begin with and found that the community construction of wordpress really helps me get content out to more people.

      2. When you go on to your dashboard and click appearance down the left hand side and then widgets you should be able to add widgets to your sidebar and footer.

        I appreciate you have an about me section already, but a short snappy two liner on the sidebar that can be seen at all times just makes it a bit more personal.

      5. I moved from Blogger to WordPress earlier this year, and the best way to take your readers with you is social media. By sharing your new WordPress blog on Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, and LinkedIn, your readers will know you’ve moved and will keep up. Hope this helped. It was very effective for me, although I admit I didn’t have too many followers on Blogger in the first place.

      6. Unfortunately I did this across all platforms, keeping the same twitter handle for example. I even did a post on the old blog way in advance and had the two blog running concurrently telling of the date I would move. Now the old blog instantly diverts to the new.

        Its bizarre!!!

  18. This past week I’ve had my first go at writing a ‘children’s story’. I’m lacking inspiration to move onto Frank the Rapid-Fire-Response Frog – and then I still have chapters on a duck and a tiger to go. I think I’m worried about how to draw it all together at the end.

    Here are the first four ‘chapters’. Feel free to give suggestions about the ending (I think I read somewhere before that true novelists should have a sense of their ending!):

    Life in the Jungle – Chapter One – Gordon the Complicated Giraffe

    Life in the Jungle – Chapter Two – Maurice the Fun-Loving Monkey

    Life in the Jungle – Chapter Three – Bernard and Barry the Data-Collecting Bears

    Life in the Jungle – Chapter Four – Lucy and Lynette the Lamenting Lyre Birds

    1. I think everyone can relate to the post (i.e. we’ve all had favorite books butchered by the motion picture industry.) Though it was about a specific book/movie, the points you make apply to most film adaptations. And I love your WTF is this section on your pie chart.

    2. Your blog looks great and has some great pictures and content, if you feel like the like and follow buttons are not prominent enough maybe you could utilise the like and follow widgets so they are more obvious to people who might not be familiar with wordpress 🙂

      2. I was able to get more followers thanks to Facebook. My suggestion – ask your close friends to share your blog on their profiles. Have them include a brief intro to the blog and talk about what they liked most. It’s a virtual crowd puller. On a related note, your blog is beautifully designed. 🙂

    2. As the link writerwannabe763 shared points out, it shouldn’t tale more than a few hours for your new Gravatar to show — make sure to go over the troubleshooting section towards the bottom of the page, where a few potential issues are addressed.
