To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!

    3. The post is quite inspirational. I like how you focused on writing about one boy’s story to bring out your message – dare to dream. The post also mentioned suicide and death in passing – I wonder if these words are based on real outcomes of people trying and failing?

        The hero of the movie I saw handles the depression and fights through it while his friend gives in to the failure and kills himself – I have lost a childhood friend to this same reason as well..

    16. I enjoyed it. Funny it really resonates with me right now…in my early 40s and regretting some choices and wishing I had better support from my parents. I can take from these feelings, however and support the heck out of my boys! I thought it was well written and personal.

  2. Hi all
    This is a music video post which comes along with an interpretive translation -kind of like translated poetry. Interesting things happen during the translation process – meaning is lost, certain ideas can’t be accurately conveyed. I’ve tried to keep the lyrical message as close to the original as possible. For word nerds there’s a footnote about Cantonese. I love to hear what you think, and if it makes sense 🙂

      1. Hi – I think your blog has some very intriguing political content, with your photos, and music related to the protests. I also appreciate that you have taken the time to translate some of the written material coming from the protesters into English. I was wondering, if you ever thought of writing a couple of personal essays about what is happening in your country.       3. Seems to me you have found your niche and direction, that’s great and one of the most important steps!
        Design-wise I’d suggest de-cluttering the sidebar a bit, maybe try one solid element instead of all the vertically aligned boxes you have now.

        I can’t contribute much to your music video post, but totally get what you were driving at. Even the (relatively seen) much easier translation form English to German often proves to be difficult as exact equivalents of the original words often just aren’t there and the alternatives don’t quite nail the real meaning.

    2. Hi – wow, that’s a worthy enterprise. I know nothing about Cantonese, so I can’t critique your interpretative translation, but it all looks very clear, helpful and lyrical. I agree that retaining the lyrical message is the trick. I’d think that people will find the
      post helpful – song lyrics are very difficult to get a handle on when you’re learning a language.

    3. It’d be great if you could have an entire section of your blog dedicated to the translation of popular songs. I would definitely love to follow that and read about the meaning. If you do – how about try using some popular American songs (maybe let us vote for a song?) or Korean-pop that is being integrated into our culture with PSY and whatnot. 🙂

      1. Thanks for the comment! I’d love to translate American/English songs into Cantonese. Some have been done by popular artists – for instance, songs of Faye Wong, a popular Hong Kong singer, are translated from The Cranberries. It’s quite difficult to translate something into Cantonese because of the tones. I’ll probably stick to the Cantonese to English translations for now 🙂
        Unfortunately I don’t speak Korean. Someone with near native Korean-English abilities might have to cover that one!

      Thank you so much for stopping by – and for being genuinely interested in what’s going on in Hong Kong! I went through your Occupy Wall Street post. Very well written. What happened at Zucotti park sounds a lot like what’s happening in Harcourt Road Admiralty right now – with the exception of perhaps, working tents rather than tarps, and less torrential rain.
      But the macro ideology and spirit behind the protests is similar – people wanting to govern themselves and are tired of being force-fed a system that doesn’t work for them. The media distrust is also true. The extra kick in the HK protests is that we’re a pseudo-democracy within a communist one-party regime: the whole “one country two systems” construct. It is confusing as it is semi-functional.
      You described the Zucotti park movement as one that was perceived to be agenda-less – not unlike the accusations the current HK protests are facing. I could go on, but the correct platform probably should be an independent post like you suggest. I’ve been procrastinating writing one, juggling between being on scene, taking photos, jotting notes, digesting what’s going on, and writing. Of the aforementioned, writing is the most time consuming and I’m afraid of putting my thoughts out there. The unreliable narrator especially in the midst of chaos rings all the more true.
      That said, I’ll still try to do some writing and offer a perspective, albeit it being a personal one.

    1. I didn’t find it boring. I think you’re quite brave to bare yourself like that and speak candidly about a very emotional (first love?) experience. If writing helps I say write as much as you like.

      1. Writing really DOES help. Doctors and therapists always recommend journaling for mental illness and I find blogging more rewarding. A journal that I hide away is sort of lonely. The blog feels like a community. Thanks for reading.

      4. Hi – I can totally relate to your experience. I have done my own romantic stalking in the past myself. I was mistakenly diagnosed as bi-polar years ago because I had manic/depressive episodes, but they were related to an extreme hormonal imbalance, and once I was able to level out my hormones with natural supplements, exercise, etc. everything has leveled out.       1. That is quite a compliment. I really enjoy her writing. I try to be user friendly. One thing I love about blogging…I don’t polish at all. I just write as a stream of consciousness and it all falls where it does. Very freeing.

I love multiple things hence writing about all sorts. Just wondered what you thought. Also how do people get more hits? I try promoting through LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter but I just wondered if I could do more.

    1. I myself am trying to focus on at least a major subject (work/life balance) with good solid sub categories/topics. I personally think it’s helpful to know which blogs are good sources of (name it here). I like it when a blog is consistently comic, or resourceful, or artistic, in a fairly specific way. Consistency in the blog I would think would bring consistent traffic. I hope this helps.

      1. I agree but i find it hard to stick to one subject as u can see. I love food, I love gardening, love giving advice, love ranting. To much to talk about to single one topic. But maybe u have somthing about being generic 🙂

    2. I think your blog diversity is fine as is and you don’t need to mess with the formula at all. Blogs that span diverse topics are great to read because you really get to know the blogger and you don’t get in to a narrow one-way tunnel with what you post. I like randomness and I think it works well so I say keep it. Your blog also has a good flow and it’s easy to read. You have a much higher follower count than me so I say you are doing something right! Just keep socializing and visiting and commenting on other’s blogs and you will grow.

    3. I follow blogs based on writing styles that I enjoy, and I don’t find the need for them to be focused on one specific topic. I enjoy seeing a variety of subjects pop up in my Reader. I have found that the best way to promote traffic is to be an active member of the blogging community through visiting other blogs and offering support or feedback.     6. I could be biased, because I do my blog the same way! (www.kassafrass.com) It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I personally think personal blogs are meant to portray you, and chances are you aren’t just one single subject.
      I find that by commenting and interacting with other bloggers, you are able to get more hits.

    7. I like the variety as well. For myself, I follow most blogs through the reader, and so when I am scrolling through the reader everything is random anyway. I think what works for your blog is your format with the same size photo header for each post. This gives it a fresh, but consistent look. I would say your blog is basically a “lifestyle” blog which generally cover a wide range of topics about daily life. So the randomness makes perfect sense and works well.

    What do people think of themes that change for each season? Whether it’s color scheme, headers or the whole thing. Cute, nifty, annoying because it takes getting used to and changes again, or who even cares?

      1. I personally think that blog themes that change with the seasons is tacky. It reminds me of the grade school teacher wearing ugly seasonal sweaters with “matching” earrings. That’s just my opinion. 😉

    2. I think if it’s just subtle changes then it would work but completely changing layout or other things might make it less user friendly. Maybe just have a seasonal photo or change some of the colors. Good luck!

    4. I think it’s a neat idea because it’s unique and keeps things fun and interesting; one can never be too creative. My suggestion would be to inform your readers that you change your themes with each new season so that they know what to expect. 🙂

I don’t do it myself because I think it’s a bit much to change an outlook of a blog just to match a season that may vary in different parts of the world… but hey, we all have our own tastes and some people may find it fun to do so! (: Sometimes, it can even be used to their benefit if their theme matches. It is tricky to do it correctly though. 🙂

    1. I think your writing style is good. The posts are easy to read and the information flows well. Adding humor here and there is always a good thing to do, people like to have a giggle if it is applicable to the topic. You also might want to get an About Me or About This Blog page made up. For many people this will be the first page they read to find out what the blog is about and if they will be interested.

    1. I like the flow and I really like that you have pics of each product and that you review each one with it’s own picture. You also might want to get an About Me or About This Blog page made up. For many people this will be the first page they read to find out what the blog is about and if they will be interested.

  20. Hello seasoned bloggers! This post comes at a perfect time for me. I took Writing 101 and fell back in love with creative fiction, but my blog was mostly non-fiction… it needs focus and redesign. A good makeover in layout, theme, and subject focus.

    3) Can I (and if I can should I) change my URL (lbn4peaceomind) as I chose this when I was selling cremation plans? I don’t anymore.

    1. Layout is good, but a lot of your content is tucked away as it’s one long scroll nobody will bother to sift through. I had no idea you even had fiction writing in there as there’s no easy way to get at the categories.

      I would suggest a magazine layout like twenty-fourteen. it’s pretty popular and easy to use as a starting point. You can make it as complicated or simple as you like but try to give your readers an easy way to find your fiction via menus or widgets, etc.

      Yes, change the name to something that represents you more accurately 🙂

      2. It’s tough to see because we’re so used to navigating our own blogs and clicking this to get that, etc. Not everyone uses category widgets either so I just set up menus that do the same thing 🙂

    1. Hi! I like the oxygen theme – your blog is clean looking, but think there might be other photo-specific themes that might fit your blog focus as well. Maybe a theme that features your photos more and enlarges them upfront? https://inasearchofbalance.wordpress.com is one of my favourite photoblogs – its theme could be something to consider?
      Your photo sizes are also quite large, so when readers click into one photo to enlarge it, loading time takes a while. For readers with less patience it might deter them from browsing the rest of your lovely photos! It might be an idea to rename your photos too, so that specific names pop up instead of pre-populated numbers.
      Great job – there are a lot of nice city photos (Prague! Clouds!) that I really liked.

        I was already thinking about changing the theme, because I don’t think oxygen is the definitive one for me. I was searching for something that is clean, easy to open on small screens, with no too many elements like hidding menus, good looking and full of options, too (like sidebars) at the same time.
        However, thanks for your suggestion, I’ll probably try that.
        And also about the photo size and name, I was alraedy planning that, but like I said, I’m in the beggining.

      I would agree with @pixie suggestions. Adding the slider on the home page would add to the look of the blog.

    1. I really like the new theme. I’ve been following your blog for a while and I think the new black background really brings out your drawings. The only thing that didn’t work for me is the rollable screen against a static background page in the homepage. Because you have live art in the foreground (e.g. the tiger head drawing), the colourful oil paint background takes away from it.
      My two cents. Beautiful works as always!

      1. Hey pixie! I agree, I’ve been thinking of muting that painting for a while as I think it’s a but much so everything viewed after tends to look washed out. I tried to work with the rolling feature of that screen with transparency in the cat head but maybe it only looks good on smaller devices? I’ll look at that one again for sure though.     3. Clearly lots of work has been done on the look and feel and the whole the design compliments the content that is there on the website.

      THe only suggestion I might have is to consider using a little bigger size font. The font size in the widgets does appear to small and increasing it might improve the accessibility of the website.

      Otherwise a job well done!

        I agree, the font size on the sidebar is a bit small but unfortunately it’s styling is locked down by the default theme settings.
        I’m evaluating the customization upgrade right now and improving accessibility seems like a pretty good reason to get it 🙂

      4. ‘Melancholy’ is an excellent instigator of writing.Excellent pieces come out from the fingertips when we are sad or in deep thoughts.

        I’ve experienced it and it has been said by some great pets as well.

        Yeah, you do that. Switch to the daylight version and first you either will be very uncomfortable in writing (I hope that’s not the case) or you’re gonna surprise yourself by what comes out.

    1. I really enjoyed your writing but I think your blog itself is a bit confusing because it seems a bit cramped and jumbled? (No offense!) Anyways, only advice I have would be maybe change your sites layout or style? (Hope that wasn’t too brazen of me!) Loved the writing however!

Thanks for the advice and yes I know people might think it’s a bit cramped like you said but I have never taken my blog very seriously to be honest and this was just an experiment I did in my summer vacations but yes, I might try to make it appear better in future.
