Topic #304:
Write a post honoring veterans, to celebrate veterans day (yes it’s a day late, but I bet you forgot so make good today).
Most nations have a day set aside to honor their veterans. If you don’t celebrate it on Nov 10th, write a post explaining the history of your veterans day.

In many Commonwealth countries it is not “Veteran’s Day”, it is Remembrance Day where we remember those who died in every war. Looking forward to the ceremony at London’s Cenotaph tomorrow.
– We will remember them.

I can’t imagine what is like to be a soldier. They sacrifice it all everyday. The image of true bravery. Their spouses and children, they are all vets in my book. Some people miss their child overnight. Can you imagine being away from yours for years. They are all the reason why this great nation has stayed great. Thank each and every one of you.

The best way to honor our veterans is to pick up a rifle and follow them to war. Be it by months, years, or decades.
The next best thing you can do is get on to a funeral honors team. I’ve never been part of a 21 gun salute, but I’ve done my share of 15 gun salutes.
The best way to honor your friends is to weep at their memorial. If I never hear a roll call again it will be too soon. It was one of the saddest days of my life when we had to call roll 8 times at one memorial. (The roll call, if you don’t know, is a part of every military funeral. Especially if they died in combat. You call several names from their section and they answer “here”. Then you call the fallen.)
As it happens, one of my friends (SGT Dale Griffen) was seen on CNN with President Obama saluting his coffin. It was nice, but it was only because he was one of 8 killed in one vehicle that he got special notice. We had to delay the memorial a couple days while we built a larger stand to the extra Soldier Crosses. (A Soldier’s cross is an M16 with bayonet stuck in the ground and their helmet on top. Of the butt stock. Hang their dogtags fron th handle and put their boots at the base.)
Another friend of mine died on his first mission. No fan-fare. His unit didn’t even have a picture of him, and had to ask his last unit (non combat unit) for one.
There is a small memorial in Puyallup, WA for the 24 that battalion lost that year, and the 13 the rest of the brigade lost.
On a happier note, there is nothing as great as coming home. They line you up in formation behind a curtain and when they raise it there is everyone’s family cheering in the stands. It really brings a tear to your eye.

Remembrance Day
I never knew the men that fought
Or those brave women die in a war
Those bloody scenes I never saw
Its easy to forget soldiers fighting in a war.
I saw Remembrance Day on my TV
It moved my heart at those deceased
Their photos looking back at me?
Far away graves they lie in peace.
Dictators, Fanatics start the wars
They fight us with their evil laws.
Women children hurt abused
Without dignity their lives are used.
No words can say just what I felt
Moved, my heart began to melt
For all those soldiers that have died.
Leaving loved ones filled with lonely pride.
Of those who died in all the wars.
Who kept the evil from our doors
Fighting for freedom in other lands
Thank you Soldiers I now understand.

I once knew a guy who put his life on the line for his country. His bravery was one of the things that attracted me to him. During his service he found out that one of his closest friends barely over the age of thirty was killed and it wreaked havoc upon his life. He came back a changed man. So now he wakes every morning knowing that his friend never will and he goes about day to day trying to live normal…if that is even possible. I love him for all that he is. To all of the guys who put their lives on the line to keep this country safe YOU ARE APPRECIATED!

It moved my heart with soldiers faces
Who died their photos looking back at me?
Saddened emotion my eyes filled with tears
Dictators and Fanatics fight evil wars.
Our soldiers fight for human dignity
Helping covered women veiled and poor.
Abused like animals under the Taliban Law.
No words can say just what I felt
Moved, my heart began to melt
For all those soldiers that had died.
Their families, alone but filled with pride.
Of those who died in all the wars.
Keeping dictators from our doors
Fighting for freedom in other lands
