What should you do when sick on vacation?

Topic #263:

Can you recall a time when you went on a big trip, but got sick? What did you do? Did you try to rest and improve your health, or did you stubbornly push on and fought to make the most of it?

    1. To the point! I like that. Check out my real-life-experience on a cruise ship. ;)http://hugmamma.wordpress.com/2011/10/01/daily-post-challenge-263-the-solution-to-being-sick-on-vacation/

  1. Can you recall a time when you went on a big trip, but got sick? Yes. What did you do? The first thing I did was to try and establish what was wrong with me. I decided that since I was in the USA and carried Canadian Health Care which the American’s would not accept, I would simply have to push on. I call it the Alamo because it was a ghastly attack by Pinto Beans.

  2. I used to get sick when I went camping. There was no way that I could continue with anything. I just had to rest until I felt better. I wouldn’t have been good company for anyone else anyway.

  3. Whoa. This DID happen to me, and I’ve already written about it.

Before my trip to ER I played mini-golf with my family, despite fever and chills, Then, the next day after my trip to ER, instead of sitting home and elevating my foot like I was supposed to, I climbed the dunes with the kids. I couldn’t let them show me up just because I was supposed to be protecting my foot, so instead of going barefoot as most dune-climbers do, I wore socks. (I’m not a very good patient – please everyone, don’t follow my example!)

And to mitenotlikeit above, I bet any US hospital would have seen you in an emergency, despite your Canda health care.

  4. I remember when living in Kansas and I had a vacation in California; I came down with a cold. I took cold remedies and kept on having fun. Of course, there is the time difference I also had to contend with. Within a few days I was feeling better and had wonderful time for the rest of my vacation.

  5. Depends on the degree of sickness. There’s a certain point where I just simply have to bow out and be alone (I’m one of those people that prefer to be alone when sick. I do not like it when other people come around and ask me a billion questions on how I’m feeling. That’s the last thing I want to focus on.).

  6. The last time I had a vacation to get sick during was when I was in high school . . . Christmas break . . . sick as a dog. I stayed in bed. I went back to school feeling that I got ripped off.
No vay-k since then . . . sad to type that out loud, so to speak (or type; you know what I mean). I’ve never had a job that actually gave me vacation time. If I had to pretend that I had a vacation and was sick during it, I guess it would depend on the sickness. Nausea, evacuating from both ends? Stick to the hotel bed. Head cold? Dayquil is a miracle drug; I’d tough it out.

  7. I got some kind of food poisoning the day I arrived at my family’s in Italy. I was lucky enough to have three weeks time, so I just kind of roughed it out for a day or two. I’ve also stayed away from pickled vegetables ever since.

I also must be allergic to the salt concentrations of the sea water in Mexico. Benadryl and sticking to the pool took care of that!

    1. Food poisoning…a real downer. Suffered a bad bout of it in June. Because of extreme dehydration, I ended up in the ER because a walk-in clinic’s doctor thought I was having a stroke. Thankfully, the ER doc proved the other wrong.

  9. I’ve been sick on vacation more than once. Typically, I just medicate and push on. Not much else can be done, because typically it hits when I’m actually traveling. Once I get to where I’m going, I rest as much as possible. Some plans may have to change to accommodate an increased amount of down-time, but on the whole the vacation goes as planned.

  10. I got INCREDIBLY ill – in India. On a business trip. For 10 days. Just before the holidays. Ugh.

I had no choice but to push through; but it certainly wasn’t fun. Or restful.

  11. Down with the flu when I reached Sin City, my Dad was afraid he’d catch pneumonia again and asked me to heal first before we visited him. My husband and I toured museums and art galleries where there were few visitors. Finally, on Day 3, I went to a drug store, bought two face masks – one for my Dad and one for me. We stormed the castle walls and ended up with a healthy get-together in Las Vegas.

  12. My husband and I were in Hawaii for a vacation. The day before the last day I really got sick. I am sure it was something to do with the food that my stomach was not used to. I forced myself to just go ahead and do everything that we had planed. I was most miserable, but my husband was happy that we got to do all of the things we had planned.

  14. Just try to rest since you’re already in a vacation anyway. It works for me if I’m having a fever during school days. Haven’t really experienced to get sick during a vacation though.

  15. It was all my fault. I spent the day in the sun swimming in the sea and looking under water at all the creatures. It was heaven. Of course I cooked my skin and sunburn was hell. The next day I threw up, and spent the day indoors in bed sleeping while the others went kayaking.

De toute façon quand on est malade, on n’est pas en mesure de faire quoi que ce soit .
Donc il vaut mieux se soigner et après guérison, finir ses vacances en beauté
