What does “home” mean to you?

Topic #261:

What does “home” mean to you? How would describe what it feels like to feel “at home”? It may be something specific about the physical details of where you’d like to live, or it could be more about how you feel when you are in the right place.

  1. Home is where I prefer to start and end my everyday. It’s where I find comfort when I am tired, where I can truly celebrate good times and enjoy my stuffy, hoity-toity period films. 🙂

  2. We sold Paul’s house in 2009 and have been on the road since, house and pet sitting all over the US. We are now in Portland, OR (where I was lucky enough to hear you speak at WordCamp PDX) and have fallen in love with the place. Just signed the lease on a rental house in the NE (Alberta) District. This is the first time in the six years that we have been together that we will have a space of our own to decorate. It feels like “home” already, and we haven’t even moved in yet. Long story short – home feels like Portland : )

  3. What does “home” mean to you? Home is the space where I can create. How would describe what it feels like to feel “at home”? I would describe it as being very very rewarding. It may be something specific about the physical details of where you’d like to live. Could be, it depends on how often I can win. How do I feel when I’m in the right place. In charge.

  4. Home is where u run to when there is confusion outside, a place of confort where secret is best kept even if it is a silken web. Your home is your “Eden”, and a treasure worth seeking.

  5. Home to me is one of two places. It can either be on the back of my horse because it’s something I enjoy doing and lets me escape from anything and everything else. I have to stay totally focused while riding so there is no room for worrying about work, relationships or life in general plus the horses are so calming to be around. It can also be at my house with the cats, dogs and fiance when we have just settled down to relax for the night. A cup of hot tea, a purring cat, my fiance’s strong arm around me and a good book or movie makes me feel pretty darn at home.

  6. Home has two primary meanings for me. First and foremost, there is my personal home. This is where I personally live. It is where I am free to do as I please and free to hang pictures and watch my favorite shows, etc. It’s where I am now able to be most comfortable.

The second meaning is related to my personal history and family. This sense of home is not confined to one location. There are two places that I recall most strongly. I’m sure as the more aged portion of my family shrinks, those places will lose some significance. The saying, “You can never go home again.” refers to this. The town my great grandmother lived in has some wonderful memories, but since her passing, that town exists in any meaningful way, only in my memories. I’m sure the same will happen to the town my grandparents live in. Now where my parents are may be somewhat of a different story, as that is where many significant events of my life happened, and for that reason, it will probably hold sentiment far longer. If I move to a different city or state, I’m sure where I live now will fall to some degree within this meaning of the word.

  8. You can’t set your GPS to the place I call “home” because that designation is for any place that’s warm and welcoming. It’s where I don’t feel like a stranger — even if I am. Maybe, it’s just a walk down city streets and a smile between strangers before we go on our way. Knowing that I’m never really alone as long as I have friends — that’s home.

  9. I feel like I have three homes, because there have been three places that lived for a long enough time that I got attached to the area: Boston, Haifa, and Palo Alto. I have close friends in all three of these places. I feel “at home” when I’m there–the streets are so familiar that I don’t have to look at street signs to know where I am.

Home is a lil’ heaven on earth, but it can be a hell as well, depending on how the people dwelling together relate to each other 😛

Our home is the best place where I can be 100% myself!

  13. Home to me is where I can do anything, everything without restrictions and I am referring to our family home…

Home is where you feel the most comfortable with doing just about anything/everything under the sun.

In regards to “it could be more about how you feel when you are in the right place.” — I feel home here at WordPress.com, there are so many talented individuals here converging, sharing their stories about challenges, ideas, thoughts, frustrations, happiness, etc…

    1. That’s interesting. I too feel comfortable around here because I contribute to the meme also . Our contribution must have a lot to do with our perception of what “Home” is . what I mean is if you want to be part of a family you must contribute something .

I know it sounds very CHILDISH but I want to cherish on my HOME because after 5 years or so… I will no longer do that…not unless my future husband will do that for me 🙂

  16. Home in addition to being where love burns brightest, can also be found, for me, in two other places: Our “homecoming” must not only take us back to “the individual as stranger,” but also to the human endowment which entails “concept formation at its source”

I respect the Earth, so when people sometimes ask me what its like to camp in designated areas, I reply, “I respect the Earth.” That reply pretty much sums up my attitude on bicycle camping, and that attitude, over time, has turned into a very pleasant sensation. The Earth is my home, and it feels really, really, great!
